Can Bedard challenge for Peter Forsbergs record?

He needs to be a ppg+ player as a rookie to be living up to his expectations (from the majority of the hockey world)

I can see his progression being closer to Marner, for example, than McDavid or Crosby. That is, not competing for the scoring lead or pushing 80-100 points in his rookie year, more likely in the 50-65 point range, but by year 3 watch out.

Well considering McDavid was 3rd or 4th in points per game as a rookie I don’t think Bedard will compare to McDavid. He will clearly be over a point per game as we have nearly 100 players doing that now. I don’t know what to expect but I think he’ll be like a better version of Stamkos in his prime.
“a better version of Stamkos” I had that exact thought yesterday too!

I think he will become a better Marner eventually, and a better Marner is McDavid esque.

McDavid is a LOT to live up to, I wouldn't put that pressure on anyone. I think he will be a truly great player though. I don't know about better than McD though.

look at the teams back then. Only Japan was bad.

austria + germany this year is awful. Plus no russian team. Bedard has easier competition.
I know you don't want to hear this but what Bedard is doing at 17 is more impressive than what Forsberg did at 19. That doesn't diminish what Forsberg did and how he dominated that year.

Everybody forgets how dominant RNH was in the year of the lockout and he's not even going to make the HHOF- that's how big of an advantage being 2 years older is at this tournament.

No, I don't think bedard is going to beat Forsberg's record this year, but to say Forsberg had tougher competition is just silly. Japan had the worst showing of all time at the tournament that year. Austria has been terrible but Sweden only beat Germany 1-0.

So he needs 17 points in a max of 4 more games to tie Forsberg right? Thats a high bar for sure, but certainly seems within reach for now.

What's the record for #2 after Forsberg?

What's the record for #2 after Forsberg?
1. Forsberg - 31
2. Markus Naslund - 24
2. Helminen - 24
4. Reichel - 21
5. Ruzicka - 20
5. Keskinen - 20

These guys were all 19-year-olds except Reichel, who was 18. Among 18-year-olds, I believe Mogilny is 2nd with 18 points. And we've already mentioned the record for 17-year-olds.

Wow so he's absolutely having an all time run so far. Obviously Canada needs to win gold too for the maximum games and the actual prestige of leading team to victory - but if they do, it seems like he's almost for sure going to finish in 2nd place at worst.

At this point he only needs 7 points to overtake Lindros as Canadas all time point leader (which is going to be super impressive; Lindros played in 3 tournaments vs two for Bedard)

Yes, we can mention the records for each age:
16 - Gretzky - 17 points
17 - Jagr - 18 points
18 - Reichel - 21 points
19 - Forsberg - 31 points

Reichel also had the 2nd most points for 16-year-olds.
It's almost like with every year these kids get older, they get better?

Maybe comparing a 17 year old accomplishments with a 19 years old is not fair?

FTR.. he'll catch Jagr.

Canada has 4 games left if all goes well which it should.

Sweden is tough defensively
The semi's and finals won't be 10-0 victories
Quarters might be a blowout

I say Bedard gets about 8 more points in this tourney, sets many records, gets drafted 1st overall and then gets 50 points in NHL next year.

You missed something. Bedard's next heroics will be in Helsinki in May where he will lead the tournament in scoring and drag Canada to a gold medal. All before he ever earns a NHL paycheck.

The worlds? I would love to see it!

Remember though, at the non pro Olympics (which are weaker than a Skoda Cup) that Mactavish and a few other rockstars (power) showed up and didn't stand out.

But, I think he could pull the Lindros and do it

So are you putting him with McDavid as I recall you saying he'd be on the team after my OIl are eliminated (bastard)?lol

Nah, just having fun with the hype. I hope he does get a shot at the WHC Team Canada this spring. but 10 games (if we play 10) I'd be thrilled with 5 pts. That would my expectation. Of course, put him on McDavid's RW. and oh my, sit back and watch the fireworks.

Laine and Kakko had great tourneys a few years ago (JP healthy scratch... should've seen it coming) but they were 18 or 19 I think.

I hope he goes. Power had a Gold before setting foot in NHL too.

I want Kulich and Jiricek but I think they'll be in Calder Cup playoffs.. f*** that!

Of course it's not fair.....Forsberg didn't even make Team Sweden when he was 17. I attended the WJs that year, and some people were even talking about Forsberg and Naslund....but they weren't on the team. At certain times, some teams - especially Sweden and the Soviet Union - were well-known for taking teams as "old" as possible (i.e. lots of 19 year olds, very few 17 year olds).

Yeah, he looks great....it'll be tough to surpass Forsberg, but he has a good chance to go past everybody else.

It will be interesting to see what Bedard does against stronger teams.....

When i watched the WJC years ago, it was always a good test to see what stars could do against Team Canada, who usually had the deepest and most NHL-like players, as competition. When guys like Mogilny and Forsberg dominated against Canada, that was a good sign, in those cases, that those players could be NHL stars.
