Other than pointing out he was 19 and should have been in the NHL, nobody is downplaying that record. I watched that tournament, and I know how dominant he was.

Also worth noting, yes, Japan helped inflate his stats, but that was in the days of the round robin, so EVERYBODY had a chance to run it up on them. The Czechs scored 14, Russia scored 16, and the US scored 12.

Canada showed some mercy, scoring only 8. Such a polite nation. :sarcasm:
It is a u20 tournament. You are allowed to play when you are 19. Stupid arguement.

I didn't say he couldn't play in the tournament. I meant usually guys of that caliber are in the NHL. That's why that record belongs to Peter Forsberg, and not............. Wayne Gretzky.

Because forsberg was better than gretzky in that tournament

Lets not forget Foppa had Nazzy as a linemate which helped.

I hate saying any particular record is "unbreakable" but I feel like this one may be. We've seen guys like Brayden Schenn have monster tournaments with 18 points; impressive but still 13 away from the record.

This is the most impressive record in all sports.

Gretzky also played against peewee players in his career and no euros.
So you aren't attempting to argue against anyone really, moreso swinging at shadows. More important however...

You believe that Peter Forsberg's WJC scoring record is the most impressive record in all sports? At all levels? That's a pretty mystifying belief but definitely amusing.

Did you... did you just try to downplay the career of Wayne Gretzky???
I'm avoiding this argument because it's silly (not you) but I did want to add to your point...

imagine a 19 year old Gretzeky at this tournament?lol Or a 19 year old Mario for that matter.

And to be clear, I love Forsberg.. I think we all do. He was perfect! Shame about the injuries.

There are three Art Ross winners (Gretzky, Crosby, McDavid) who were eligible to play in the WJC. Other than probably Gretzky I still don't think that they would have put up 31 or more points. Not that it matters, as Forsberg actually did it and for everyone else it is pure speculation. It's probably the greatest WJC performance ever given the raw scoring domination.

Just wow at the unrealistic pressure mounting on this poor kid by fans and the TSN hype machine.

I mean come on man; McDavid had 11 points, Tavares had 15 points and Crosby had 9 points.
Crosby played when he was 16. Did he play at his draft year as well? He has to be pretty dominant, would been a 80p player in NHL at 17.

McDavid and Crosby would be close. Crosby wss better at 19 than McDavid was in my opinion. Only teenager to win the scoring race in NHL, and scored 120. Come on, he would had scored a lot. McDavid would run threw a lot of people with his added strength.

I guess Games Goal Ass P
Crosby 7 5 12 17
McDavid 7 8 12 20

Lol!

No one will break Forsbergs record, similar no one will break Gretzkys goal record for single season..

But to claim it's the greatest record ever, in all sports... i want, whatever you're on..

This is likely a record that will never be broken - no need to be disappointed if Bedard doesn’t do it.

No it wont happen for a couple of reasons.

Most stars of that caliber will be in the NHL already.

Foppa got great support and chemistry with both Sundstrom and Naslund. Teams are usually loosely put together and this is not common to have two linemates from your hometown.

Home ice and big ice is an advantage as well.

The game evolved even though scoring can be padded against weaker nations its not as common as back then.

All of the above is highly unlikely to ever happen again.

Crosby played when he was 17 as well. That was the 2005 super team with Crosby-Bergeron destroying everyone. Following year as an 18 year old he put up 16 points in 9 games at the Worlds too.
