Yeah. My bad. It appears I meant they were doing it intentionally but of course they wouldn’t. They’ll take their better players back as soon as possible.
But in effect, were it to work out that way, I think staggering them is a good way to bring back a bunch of troops to the frontline.

So glad they smashed the Bs. They are so annoying.

The most physical game the Rangers have played in a very long time. They have the size to throw it around and get inside the defenders by the net. When they use it they can do some damage.

They played very close to a full 60 min game. Good for the fans to see it.

On a side note: I really wish I could see what a vintage Messier elbow would do to Marchand. I’m sure he wouldn’t have missed that crosscheck to Lindgrens face.

To be honest, I cringe whenever I see a Messier elbow. It was a different era, of course, so I don’t judge Mess harshly there. But I am glad that kind of thing is mostly gone and will be thrilled when it’s extinct.

It is interesting to note that 3 of the 4 lines had at least one grinder on it and they seemed to play with an identity. The only line that was mediocre was kinda whatever line Zib was on as it tended to not have a grinder. But what a difference it makes when players drive the net. Really creates more chaos. And completely changes the spacing in the offensive zone for our more skilled players as well. I hope when the skill slowly comes back into the lineup that this identity can remain. Though it's hard to play inside every game, it's required to play a winning brand.

Blackwell does a ton of little things that is so needed on this team, and he’s producing.

I know some take issue with him being on the first unit, but he’s hunting down lose pucks and forcing lost face offs and keeping the energy up in the middle of the ice which is leading to more chances.

He’s been a consistent key player and doing a lot of what Fast did in the offensive zone except he’s scoring a higher clip right now.

Who knows. Maybe Gorts found an uncut gem

PDG-Rooney-Blackwell is gonna be the 4th line we didn't know we needed. Island of misfit NHL-AHL tweeners.

Strome deserves some mad praise for turning his game around WITHOUT Panarin's help.

Got some flashes of what this team can be eventually if they figure it out.

Warms my cold bitter heart to see them play with such life on the first game with fans. Seriously. I really really appreciate it.
Other misc thoughts:
  1. Absolutely insane what the Bs get away with. If Studnicka or Marchand are wearing blue jerseys they get an extra 6 PIM easily. Easily. That’s just the low handing fruit.
  2. Kreider really has stepped up w Panarin out. Not just the goals, he is bringing the heat on the forecheck.
  3. Lafreniere had some flashes tonight eh?
  4. Lindgren has to bleed every other game. Need the numbers on that.
  5. Fox is that good. Crazy that he did what he did tonight and I almost forgot to mention him. He’s so consistent. Really a special hockey player.
  6. Blackwell...#43 is an interesting choice in recent-ish NYR history. Pretty fitting with the way he is playing now if you ask me.
  7. They got some bounces tonight but it’s been a long time coming

Good to see the Rangers play a great game against a top team, for the first time in front of a home crowd. But I have to say, the Rangers have been playing great for a long time now. This game is all about defense. And defensively they have been playing great for long stretches of the season. Their PK has been awesome. What a turnaround from last year. Not sure how they are doing it or why, but it is obvious in their 5 on 5 play. At even strength, they are just out numbering opponents. Along the boards, in front of the net, even in the neutral zone. On every video shot you will always see all 5 skaters in view when they don't have the puck. They are playing as a 5 man unit. So this makes it easy to win battles, and turnover pucks because there are outnumbering their opposition. You go against the boards, you're gonna win every battle when you have 2 against 1,... 3 against 2 and so on. And they are doing this everywhere on the ice. At even strength, it looks like we are on the PP. Their tight gap control has been excellent. Every time an opponent gets control of the puck, a Rangers skater is there in his face.

If the Rangers keep to this sound defensive structure, they will no doubt have a winning season and be a playoff contender. What really bodes well, is that even replacements buy into the defensive structure and there are no defensive lapses. Come on, we are doing this with Jack Johnson, Libor Hajek, Brendan Smith and Anthony Bitetto? Are you kidding me? Of course a lot of their success involves the backchecking of our forwards who have really picked up their defensive game. They have really been clogging the middle. The only goal I have seen recently that came from a pass across the defensive zone, was the PP goal last game in Philly on that back door play. Other than that, I have not seen many back door passes that have been successful against us.

It was only a matter of time before our offense and PP started to produce. Mainly because the offensive production of all the top teams in the league,... comes off their great defensive play.

We have been playing playoff hockey, here in the first 3rd of the season.

This was a game where there far more contributors and hard to single out only 3.

Strome plays better when he's not trying to force everything through Panarin. Even on the PP tonight he didnt make dumb forced passes.

AL showing us what the hype is about.

Miller at this point just does Miller things. I think he might have a magnet on his stick. When he went end to end on the PP his jersey was flying like a cape.

The Kreider goal needs to be his game tape on loop. Sure it was a lucky bounce. But how he went hard on the forecheck and straight bullied the D to create room for himself is why he got the big contract.

Lindgren should be nicknamed Vaseline. Has this guy played a single game without bleeding?

Fox is so good and when he shoots like he did tonight it makes goalies respect his passes.

Blackwell really never wants to ride an AHL bus again.

Jack Johnson's best game as a ranger. But that's a low bar.

Anyone notice Smith pinching with a 6-2 lead and whiffing?

I think this how Quinn wants his team to play like. Hard north south drive to the net. But like every win against a good opponent, will they build on it?

I get excited any time I see potential with a guy that small. It's a clear and obvious reason why he would just never get a fair shot.

you're saying this like Brett Howden won't be a mainstay of the bottom 6.
 
Strome stepping up for games now when it is needed without Panarin, showing 90% of the posters here are just clowns. He was bad at the start of the season but boy is he picking up now.

best trade it was, getting Strome here. He would be the perfect 3rd line center if the price is right otherwise trade for a good return.

I love the guy. Even with his flaws.

Fox won't get serious Norris consideration until he puts up a big offensive year. That is what the Norris has become.
It's also how many rank defensemen. Quinn Hughes gets tons of hype because he is putting up points. Defensively, he stinks. Morgan Reilly is another example. He puts up points (doesn't hurt playing with Mathews, Marner, Tavaras, Nylander), but is a traffic cone in his own end.
Right now, I would put Fox just behind Makar in ranking young D. Fox has better hockey sense and is a better defender. Makar is the more dynamic skater and offensive threat.
Fox won't get the praise he deserves, but those who watch him consistently know how good he is.
