Agreed. But no A list guy walked away for nothing like Gaudreau.
The thing is he wasn't A list any more going into that last season. What are you throwing out to Johnny after 49pts? Into 21-22 he looks like a stallion but you aren't trading him with the club on its way to the second best season in its history. I don't know what he turned down from the Flames in the summer of 2021 but if he was fixated on Kaprizov's $9M deal even an $8M offer might seem light. And we don't know if it was Tree or Lewis Gross that was being unrealistic but it is tough to judge the club based on the 115pt season that nobody thought Johnny was ever going to approach. Gross was Nylander's agent as well so we know he can play hardball.

I expect Rielly will be kept, Muzzin's career is likely done. I would move on from Brodie and get some picks while he still has some value. Keep Lilly and sign Schenn. Maybe see if you can land Orlov and try to fill out the rest of the D with some guys that are big and mobile like the Vegas D.
Maybe I misheard I but I think he complimented the forwards for being good defensively, but then pointed out that they're 14th in scoring chances against.

Then he goes on kyper and says his focus on improving the team is protecting the front of the net.

I think half of the leafs defencemen might be

Tree knocked it out of the park. Everything a Leaf fan needed to hear.

1. He respects the Core Four. He's here to protect the players and make them happy and want to be in this environment.

2. The media loves Tree and he knows how to win them over. This can only benefit the team as the media will have a more favorable attitude towards the team and less likely to criticize.

3. He understands how good this team is and how the line between winning and losing is razor thin and he's not going to do anything stupid and make drastic changes.

4. He respects the coach and even credited him for the Leafs ability to check, which is what is needed to win.

5. He's the steady professional hand the Leafs need right now and will believes in this group and will give the Core Four a chance to run it back.

The saying isn't even from hockey... but sure.

just look up quotes from:

-Ovi, Crosby, ROR, Bolts (Stamkos, Kucherov, Cooper, etc...; look up any other recent cup winners and ask them. Avs with Makar is probably the only exception; and even then Avs weren't playing shit hockey; they checked hard and played sound defense

heck Ovi changed the way he played to win the cup.

A once in a generational superstar sees the value in defensive game but of course.....

Gaudreau doing that to Treliving was the best thing that could have happened from our perspective probably, especially with the same agent.

Matthews is gonna be the priority but I imagine Treliving is gonna get serious about extension talks with Nylander shortly after very fast and if there is hesitancy in re-signing or he's non-committal in returning to Toronto, I guarantee that he's out the door and he's just gonna try to get the best player(s) possible in return.

Even 09 only caused a one year blip of a flat cap. We're talking a cap that went up only 2 million over 5 years. There was no building that in to risk management. Like, it's a thing, knock him all you like but this part is real.

Whats also real is 31 other teams had to deal with the same issues btw and none of the other 31 teams was absolutely STUPID in having 3 players making 10+ AAV on their team. NONE!

Yes Johnny was also a training camp holdout on his last deal. I guess it could just be coincidence but I suspect Gross doesn't try as hard as some some agents to talk his clients out of banging heads with the clubs. I know its petty but I was glad when his other client Sandin was dealt.

How many players did he have making 11 million. 56% spent on 12 forwards sound like good distribution but 50% spent on just 4 forwards……..well there’s that.
However my question stands, was he gifted 4 players like Matthews, Marner, Will and Reilly
40% of Calgary's cap was spent on 5 forwards. 304 points.

Leafs core 4 = 351 points, by the way.

One thing that doesn't work out with the Leafs model is that if an injury occurs in the playoff, that's a huge % of your payroll not contributing to you winning.

Spreading it around a little bit can go a long way.

1. Ah yes, that's what we need. More respect and coddling of the petulant 4.

2. Who cares how the media blowhards feel about the GM or team? Winning hockey games matters. Not winning a popularity contest.

3. Great, more of the same with this loser group.

4. He should be taking Dubas' boy toy out to the trash, not praising him.

5. See #3.

I wanna be happy because he's not Dubas, but holy shit this sounds like it's gunna be a repeat of the last 7 years

Good point, also it's not just injuries it's inconsistency. If 1 of the very high aav players has a bad game that has a bigger impact too

Also a good point, it isn't a sample size anymore either, we've seen 1 series win with this model.

Montreal when JT got a fluke injury? Anyway you slice it, that's 11M / 82 M not dressed or 13.4% of your cap.

The fish smells from the head down but I'm willing to see what Tree does over the next 2 months.

Ya, sure it's been hard on other teams too, but as you say, it hit the Leafs particularly hard for the reason you mention. It's a thing.

A most encouraging remark by BT on the Kyper and Bourne show:

"... We got to look for ways to augment our team. That's not necessarily just air lifting people in. It's getting people to adjust how they play. Getting people to make sure we're getting inside. Making sure that our puck battles is in an area of highest priority. How do we check? We don't defend, we check. To me there's a difference. You're on your toes, you're aggressive.

We know what it's like in the regular season. I guy may finish his check -- you know -- you know -- You're in 82 games, you're back to back, you're in 3 in 4.... There are no fly-bys in the playoffs. There's no let-ups. And we got to make sure we have a roster that handle no matter what the game presents. "

Wait until BT sits down and watches our playoff games over the past couple of seasons. He's going to be shocked by the frequency of fly-bys and the team's deer in the highlights reaction to the rough stuff.
