The desperate team always has to "pay" more. In this case, Anaheim was desperate for an AHL goalie upgrade so they couldn't get an extra asset out of Detroit. Same thing Ducks fans have been saying about Gibson... other teams need him more than the Ducks need to dump him so they'll have to pay the price.

Pro-rated, sure. But even, then Campbell's salary would have been ~235k vs, Husso's 1.5mil.
(56/82 = ~32% of his salary remaining)

Assuming they even valued the two players close to equally as a solution, odds are in order to get the cheaper of the two it would cost the Ducks an asset, as opposed to being free.

All for a short term injury replacement? It doesn't make much sense without squeezing for an extra asset or two.

Since the Wings are under no pressure to make a trade, in all likelihood if the choice is to unload him along with a pick, or just let him finish out the year, they take option B. I wouldn't burn a pick just to do that if I were Detroit. And then the Ducks would likely have to spend a pick themselves to get someone else.

Essentially the Ducks chose to solve a temporary AHL problem with money instead of spending an asset.

Yzerman's MO has been to not trade anything of value for pieces who aren't going to be in the organization for awhile.

Debrincat is the one big move he's really made on the trade market where he had to give anything significant.
100%. Nobody will remember they signed and/or overpaid for Merrill, Holl, Compher, etc. Thise guys were always going to be filler type players until kids were ready. He’s also stayed true to his word, that when a kid earns his spot, they’ll make room on the roster.

No big time UFAs we’re ever going to sign with a rebuild, and they literally didn’t have the assets to be involved in trades like let’s say NJ has been able to make. They’re finally reaching that point now, and we will see more core type trades, but they still have about 2 years, where he can still play around with bringing filler players in and out.

He’s given very limited assets away, yet was still able to build a roster where the kids can be protected somewhat, instead of just throwing them to the wolves. That’s a strategy compared to let’s say Buffalo and Ottawa, who’ve ruined so many young players, or have been forced to trade young players.

The only so-called bad thing about how they’ve built this team with average to above average veterans for their kids to play with is… maybe they haven’t had picks as high as they would have losing more.. I’d argue, they’re not ruining kids though, or having to trade top prospects because they’re not working out, etc, etc.

Buffalo has wasted so many young players in comparison. Just look at Kasper right now. Instead of being thrown to the wolves playing 2C with no protection, he has 14 points in his last 17 games playing with Larkin and Raymond at 20 years old.

When we look back at how they did a rebuild, teams are going to try replicating it. You can’t go through life waiting to win the lottery. It’ll take 10+ years. Ask Colorado, NJ, TOR and the Oilers. It’s much more fun having people laugh at your draft picks and a few years later watching those players become stars.

Yeah unless somebody can explain to me otherwise, this just seems like Verbeek doing his buddy a favor.

He couldn't find an AHL goalie elsewhere @ less salary?

Especially strange considering Anaheim is clearly a budget team.

Will they need Husso's cap when they trade Gibson to hit the floor? You'd think the team trading for Gibson would send back cap anyway...

It would be less than ideal to have to give up any assets to fill a temporary need for an AHL goalie. It's safe to assume that acquiring a "cheaper" goalie, would have cost the Ducks a pick or something. This is a free acquisition that only costs them the remaining 1.2M on Husso's deal.

If you are in a position where you need an AHL goalie for a few months due to injuries, would you prefer your NHL club to give up a pick, or just spend some cash? That's the win-win aspect for Anaheim, they were shopping for a goalie and didn't have to give up anything to acquire Husso because of his contract. It would be annoying to give up any NHL assets to acquire an AHL goalie, so they found a work around.

It would be an entirely different story if the Wings were calling around trying to dump Husso, then you would expect incentive attached to his contract. However this was Anaheim calling around trying to find a goalie because their only healthy netminder in the AHL, isn't ready for that level.

Also this concept of Anaheim being a "budget team" expired about a decade ago. That was a talking point when they were still contending because they didn't spend all the way to the cap for a couple years. Then they started to and spent right to the cap for several years. The Ducks have been a cap floor team during their rebuild because that just makes sense, nothing to do with an internal budget. They've also been known to flex some money on their AHL club in the past.
