All surface level bs. His real thoughts and ideas are behind closed doors.
Yes da way it should be .. good news is he believes in D and G to win Cups with great checking .. i think you will see our D rebuilt and look much stronger in 2023 season .. still expect to see one of Mitch or Willy gone minimum to rebuild da D .. it really is da only way it can be done due to cAP

Exactly true and it's why Marner fades in the PO. He doesn't do the wall at all. Nylander sucks as well at that but he has the redeeming quality of high zone entry success rate. The guy gets in there every time and can out accelerate most the league in 2 strides. Just watch him dust people while entering the zone, it's awesome.

yup thats a big issue IMO

- Willy doesn't struggle as much when it comes to holding onto the puck in the o-zone, and generates offense; but his inability to backcheck and check hard can sometimes bite the team on the ass
-Marner can back check, and plays sound 2-way game; but his inability to work the boards, no seperatoin speed can hamper is offensive playing/production on 5v5 hockey

Ideally we keep both and dump tavares; but of course....

The only thing Marner needs to learn is when the going gets tough, simplify.

Florida series it felt like he got in his mind he needed to do something amazing because of the struggling but it would just lead to poor puck management / turn overs.

Its mostly due to Tavares' full NMC/NTC; 2 more freakin' years before he is off the books :shakehead

It also helps Nylander that all the defensive focus of other teams is on rightfully shutting down the Matthews-Marner line. At least Marner backchecks and can play a 2-way game, Nylander not so much and coupled with the reports he wasnt allowed to go to the world tournaments make me think he would be the odd man out but it could very well be either of them. We can't run it back fully again can we?...

Marner was making "cute" plays that screwed us. This isn't the first time he has done this btw... Just look at Game 2 his "cutezy" play followed by "Matthews' cutezy play" and boom the puck was back of our net.

Honestly, really liked my first impression of Brad. Confident, thoughtful answers. Gave about as much information as he could without completely dodging peoples questions.

Seems pretty clear to me at least that Sheldon is not coming back. The fact that Brad identified there was work to be done on establishing a relationship and/or a mutual plan of attack seemed to me that there was a bit of a gap in that relationship at the present moment. He also specifically mentioned the coaching decision to be a priority. You'd figure if Sheldon were coming back, Brad would have had that discussion right away and put that argument to rest in front of the media immediately. That is at least how I see it.

I love how he isn't planning on making a knee jerk reaction just to make change. If it makes sense, it appears like he is open to it, but he doesn't look like he wants to get 50c on the dollar for a return. Which is fantastic

I was always a huge Dubas guy, and continue to believe in Kyle but so far I am happy with the Treliving hire. I have a good feeling about him as GM TBH.

Now, the NHL is a 32-team entity.

To succeed, you need a GM who’s able to maintain relationships with the old guard and create relationships with all the newcomers who’ve taken over front-office positions in the past handful of years. Treliving is good at that. His operating philosophy is to have a finger in every pie. Little that goes on around the NHL escapes him.

Some GMs take a more conservative approach and just wait for deals to come to them. Treliving is one who’ll initiate them. He’ll call and ask: Would you consider Player X for Player Y? And then starts the dialogue and he often finds a way of closing the deal.

You hear it all the time, but it bears repeating here. Probably 90 percent of the trade talk that goes on at the GM level doesn’t ever materialize into an actual deal. The key is to be in there pitching so that when a team is ready to move, you’re ready with an offer.

Enough has been said or written about the Matthew Tkachuk trade to Florida — which netted the Flames an entirely defensible haul in what was then a 115-point player, Jonathan Huberdeau, along with a quality defenseman in MacKenzie Weegar, a prospect and a future first-rounder.

Let’s dissect an earlier Treliving blockbuster with the Carolina Hurricanes in June 2018. That year, Treliving traded Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland and the rights to Adam Fox to the Hurricanes for Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin. He then promptly signed both newcomers to contracts averaging under $5 million per season.

For those price tags, Lindholm and Hanifin provided tremendous value. Lindholm was the center on the top line in hockey two years ago (with Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau) and Hanifin became a reliable top-four minute-muncher. Fox wasn’t going to sign with Calgary (and he didn’t sign with Carolina either). Hamilton left as a UFA because the Hurricanes didn’t want to pay his asking price, and injuries derailed Ferland’s career almost the minute he arrived.

..............

And again, a parallel to today because if you’re a lifer in the game, the way both Fletcher and Treliving are, the challenge of getting the Maple Leafs first over the finish line is deliciously appealing and too tempting to turn down.

Maybe Treliving’s Arizona connection — where he worked for seven years in the Coyotes organization before Brian Burke hired him to be GM in Calgary — will be the foundation of a future relationship with Auston Matthews. Maybe he will find a taker for goaltender Matt Murray. Maybe he can make it work with coach Sheldon Keefe in the beginning, the way he did after inheriting Bob Hartley when he first took over the Calgary job from Jay Feaster.

Treliving is nothing else if not persuasive. It was a face-to-face meeting with Huberdeau over dinner in Montreal last summer that convinced Huberdeau to sign with the Flames long-term before he ever played a game for the team.

In short, Treliving can communicate his vision to players and to staff and is capable of thinking outside the box for creative solutions, which is the No. 1 task in Toronto.
The job’s a pressure cooker, just as it was in Fletcher’s era, pre-salary cap. In 1993, it was a symmetrical 24-team league. Even after all this time, and all the industry changes, two things remain fundamentally the same: The motivation to take the job and the expectations attached to it.

How did Connor McDavid describe it last month? Oh yeah: Stanley Cup or bust.

That was a straight up suicide pass, blame is 90/10 on Marner there. If it was the 90s, Matthews would still need to be in a dark quiet room right now.

I think it’s smart business to call the core and say what Shanny did. And leak it too.

Your not doing your job properly by declaring to the Toronto media, “yes, we absolutely will be breaking up the core 4”

I think it shows desperation and you won’t get the best trade like that.

Why commit to something that may just not be there?

For example, you want to buy a house by the end of summer and declared this to you family and friends, but the only house in your search area all summer is a lemon and needs a lot of work, do you just go ahead and buy the house because it’s nearing the end of summer?

Sometimes patience works too. Or at the very least keeping your cards close to your chest…

Personally I think trading Matthews, Marner, or Nylander when Tavares is off the books in 24 months is stupid.

However, if you can get a hockey trade out of moving one of them, and it makes sense short term, medium term and long term, fine.
I desperately hope you’re right. Just one trade of one of ‘em and in all aboard again. Please, I love the organization but I cannot stand the core, any of them, I don’t give half a shit if they each score 200 pts a season…. There is only one thing that truly matters.

yep feel the same. I have never seen a player pull up consistently like he does. Thats why when that clip of him throwing 3 checks on a single shift during the worlds was bizarre to see....like wtf... you have that in you?
Because hes picking his spots..

Marner's problem is he gets complex when his linemates start struggling. It hasn't escaped my attention that in the last few playoffs, Marner's errors have occurred in situations where his center (Tavares or Matthews) was struggling with offensive production.

I said it in the Montreal series; even though he's gotten better at shooting and is a legit threat to score himself now, if he's your primary offensive shooting threat on a line that line's not going to work. And when Matthews isn't shooting, it drags the entire line down. Of course, this is where a coach with a brain would have recognized this and switched things up...

Being different doesn't necessarily make you better. Says his job is to protect them - says its not about just the core 4, but the entire team. It's about the Leafs, and their success. Says he's lucky to have them.

*Shanahan, on how much responsibility he bears - says he's felt pressure from day 1 until today. Sometimes along the way, need to make changes. Says he always feels the pressure, which was one of the reasons he took on Leafs job. Always asks what they can do to be better.

*Treliving, on draft restrictions - Shanahan points out that the Flames have placed restrictions on what Brad can and cannot do at the draft, but won't go into details.

*On the Tkachuk trade - calls situation unique & circumstances. Says Matthew came to them & informed them that he wanted to move, which pushed them into the market. Says they worked hard to make an organizational decision that fit Calgary's competitive window. Says he didn't want to move him, but circumstances arise and you have to deal with them as best you can. Says time will dictate how all things play out.

*Treliving, on adding staff / AGM - one of the draws to Toronto was all the quality staff off the ice. Praises Brendhan Pridham, calls him the best at what he does in the league. Says Pridham helped extensively as a league employee while Treliving was in Arizona. Also Praises Dubas, and calls him a close friend. Says Dubas has left him quality pieces both on and off the ice. Says people before him, including Dubas, Lou, Nonis, and Burke, all have their fingerprints and have contributed to high talent.

*On his biggest priorities - hard to say. Lots of priorities. Says contractual issues will be dealt with. Says Sheldon situation is a priority too. Mentions draft coming up. Says he has to speak to manager's community too - mentions he's a bit behind since leaving Calgary. Says #1 priority is to get out and meet Auston. Says there's a lot to do.

*On relationship with Gio & Brodie - says its good to see Gio still playing at 75 (LOL). Says they are all good people & with good families. Says he also knows Luke Schenn. Says you can't manage from the office anymore, but next to the people.

*On why it hasn't worked so far - Says its hard to see externally. Don't get to know until you get behind the curtain. Says it's very hard to win in this league. Says talent & skill needs to work at both ends of the ice. Have to check hard in order to win.

*Shanahan, on Dubas timing - says he doesn't think it was iintentional. Says this is how these things play out. Says Pittsburgh/Fenway have been in contact, and he's endorsed Kyle. Says he's very happy for Dubas.
For anyone that missed the presser earlier ^

Well he can't say hes going to meet with Keefe and then commit to him in the next breath to appease the media. I got the sense it's 50/50 on keefe
