The value of Byram is still relatively high. Primarily due to a couple of reasons. His combination of speed, youth, size, poise and defensive play is very hard to find at 22. Not only that, but he’s actually proven in the playoffs and regular season that the talent is there. He still has stretches of very elite play and has shown that he can be integral to a Cup-winning team. Any GM is willing to pay a premium for that. Secondly, Byram is a low-risk player. What I mean by that is that is he has a very high ceiling, but if it doesn’t pan out, his floor is still very good as a shutdown top-4 defenseman. For 3.8 mill a season, that’s not bad by any means with the cap going up. There’s not too many players like that. Which brings me to my next point. Byram is on a great contract. Any GM who sees anything in him, can lock him up for long-term come extension time.
Now of course, there’s the injury risk with him, but I bet that Byram does eventually breakout as a superstar and has a healthy career. If anyone watches him play, you would know that he’s too good not to.
