Remember 5 minutes ago when we were excited to watch McGroarty-Eller-Puljujarvi after they crushed preseason and then they sent down McGroarty immediately, benched Puljujarvi for no reason and then traded Eller? Absolutely stupendous.
And somehow through out all of that, they still figure Sullivan isn't the problem.

What you wankers don't get is Lizotte's not the new 3c.

Noel Acciari is.

People complaining about getting a 3rd and a 5th instead of a 2nd on the deadline must think the probability of a 35 hockey player getting injured is below zero. It was a good trade, done at the right time.
Package him and Petts at the TDL to a contender for a 1st would be my move. I keep that 1st in my pocket in case we do poorly in the lottery and use it to move up. If we kill in the lottery then we have a 1st we can use on a high risk/high reward type player and not lose too much sleep over it if it doesn’t pan out.

Eller was 32/33 in my head so this is a fair point. I doubt he'd have gotten a 2nd at the deadline anyway.

They're not gonna win a Cup through free agency or trades for roster players alone. They have to try through the draft, no matter what the odds are.
It's the only way. It's not that hard to understand.
No shit, but that wasn't what we were arguing about, so quit tilting at windmills.

I was criticizing deferring picks without getting a premium, then you were going on about how it was actually an advantage because it would benefit our window based on 3rd rounders being NHL ready by age 22. Which doesn't fly because its pollyannishly optimistic, as was shown.

So what flies more then? Getting prospects earlier and burning through their ELCs when the team's not ready to make the playoffs? That's what you want?
All the picks should be deferred, not just 3rds. We're not close to ready. And apparently no one was giving up a 2nd. Dubas has been shopping him since Spring.

You are acting as if you know what Dubas is thinking and there’s a clear strategy of a long rebuild. Problem is that goes against everything Dubas has said publicly and what he’s been doing up until this move.

Maybe he just took this deal because it was the highest deal he thought he could get and it “met their price” as has been reported. That doesn’t make it a good deal or a strategic coup.

They just re-signed Crosby and committed to him they were going to be competitive. This isn’t a team willing to strip it down. So in that vein, the sooner the pick is the better.

Sullivan gots to go!

I am a little bit surprised at the negative reactions to this deal, to be honest. I get it, we really suck right now. And everyone is to blame, pretty much. But in a vacuum, this is a solid trade. Sometimes, timing matters when making deals and moves in general. After that "performance" on Monday night, if you don't react you risk everybody checking out. Also, trading a seemingly popular player is also a wake-up call. A bit of a shake-up. This team seems to respond only to shake-ups but it happens too rarely under Sullivan. Sullivan's idea of a shake-up is to move Bryan Rust to Crosby's line. Every time, all the time, no matter what. He never benches anybody other than his fringy Europeans or any player over the age of 26. So at least Dubas traded away a player that Sullivan loves.

Let's face it, Eller should have been traded a long time ago. It was ridiculous to start this season with him after bringing in Hayes and Lizotte. Is he better than those two guys? Sure, but it is about the numbers game. Too many redundant players on this roster, and that has been the case for some time now. Plus, Eller played way too much on this team. Him no longer playing on the PP gives guys like Puljujarvi and Puustinen more possibilities, er, possibly. The guy behind the bench still calls the shots, though.

Now, having said that, you can't publicly state that anyone is up for grabs save for the captain, and then end your shopping spree with Eller for two picks. This has to be a start, and not the end to the shake-up. Otherwise, it is more smoke from Dubas and not enough fire. A familiar theme since he came here.

The picks are fine. In a case like this, you take the best deal and not be picky about draft year or even the team you are sending the player. We beat Washington with Eller in our lineup. I am sure we can still beat Washington with him back in their lineup.

NOW, let's see if Dubas can do something to fix the blueline or find a taker for Tristan Jarry. Then I would be impressed.

Of course, the downside to this trade is that we are that much closer to seeing Matt Nieto back in the lineup. Gotta have that extra PK specialist, right?

All things being equal, adding quality youth and futures now, yes. We don't know what their development paths will look like, and any prospective deal that makes us wait 2 years for an asset should pay us a premium for that benefit.

Dubas "shopping him since spring" doesn't mean anything. He's a 35 year old UFA, his value is going to be greatest near the deadline when his prorated cap hit is lowest - ie more potential buyers - and the commitment is shortest. Any push to move him before then was premature, unless we got a premium. Which we didn't.

Seems like a pretty standard, fair for both sides trade. I thought they would be able to get a 2nd for him at the TDL, but the difference is probably not that big, especially if Washington falls off post-Ovechkin.

I don't care even slightly about deferring the pick a few years. The guy is unlikely to make a difference...well...ever, but especially in the final years of Crosby-Malkin. Beyond that, who f***ing knows how it's going to play out. It's a crapshoot. Nobody is smart enough to perfectly time a rebuild. Just get the most picks and the highest picks you can, regardless of the year.

Petts should be able to get a 1st by himself come trade deadline

I'm fine with this trade, Eller for picks is what was always expected.... it's what the majority of this team is worth barring a select few that could return a decent prospect like Pete, Rust or Rakell.

I'm not convinced at all that Dubas has a rebuild plan going. Every interview or statement up to the past week was retool on the fly, bringing in players to help now. I am a little concerned that the sudden switch to a rebuild is nothing more than trade everyone and get picks. When those picks will need on ice leadership and guidance. The Rebuild is obviously 3 years too late, and firing the Coach is 5 years too late.

I haven't really spent a lot of time going through Dubas as a drafting GM, however if I am remembering correctly the very few things I have read is that he is above average. I wanted a planned Rebuild a few years ago to avoid the desperate rebuild because of the "oh shit, we're actually really bad, how did this happen all of a sudden?" lack of vision.

Anyways, we seem stuck with the latter, I fear FSG is more than willing to give Sullivan the reigns to the rebuild.... then we become Columbus forever on.

NHL GMs for one. People who want to start seeing some of the fruits of a sell off before they die for two.

By downgrading the pick. IE a 3rd the next year typically gets you a 4th in the current draft.

Eller should have been in pretty high demand this deadline based on his play and what comparable players have gone for the last few deadlines. Just seems like a panic move and a low sell. I'd also be willing to wager we're going to be bringing in another player in the next few days with this cap space. They will likely be much worse than Eller.

This isn't really the case though like it is with the NFL. You see it all the time with the mid and late rounders going for the same round next year.

The thing that sucks is that we currently don't have our second in the coming draft as it was traded to Montreal in the Petry trade.

Any team trying to rebuild/retool and not having at least their top 3 picks in a draft is not off to a good start IMO... There is still time, but acquiring a 2nd or additional 1st are a must for next year, because a lot of teams will not be moving their 2026 pick

I think the deal is, on its face pretty okay. I'm still bemused why they think getting picks in 2027 is some sort of genius move, but sure, why not. I'm just mostly annoyed that we're trading a player who has value and has played well for us because we refuse to use him effectively for reasons that are beyond me.

It's just so tiresome to see us make these moves because the coaching staff doesn't want to fix the situation or has no idea about fixing the situation. Eller is just a symptom of other organizational problems.

This is close to how I see it too. I'd have less of a worry about us rebuilding if we didn't have an abysmal record of developing players or playing youth since 2017. Trading Eller to make room for more Accairi ice time isn't helping a rebuild at all, nor is it helping compete.

You see that with 5th - 7th rounders more if they’re in the back half of the round. GMs will take the chance the pick next year will be higher.

Honestly, NHL picks aren’t moved strictly for future picks very often. Usually it’s a team moving back and getting paid a later pick in the current year or a future pick as incentive.

Maybe all the other GMs know the country is going to fall apart before 2027 and they’re all laughing at Dubas.

I never thought you were getting much for Eller. 10 years ago maybe but teams just don’t trade away future assets frivolously anymore.

It’s more disappointing that some plug will fill the spot instead of even considering the thought of trying a younger player.

It was probably one of those dealies where they may have wrangled a 2nd if they agreed to retain but didn't want to so took the 3 instead. They already have 2 retention spots used and will likely need at least one for any TDL dumpages.
