This is a really intriguing question. Could McDavid take a lower AAV in exchange for a percentage of ownership stake? I’m guessing there are CBA rules against it but in the real world this would be a legit possibility.

No, this would be cap circumvention. They could probably elect to pay him in team shares, or allow him to purchase shares with the money they paid him, but his cap hit would be the same.

This is a fascinating topic. My favourite podcast is “All-In” and on one of their episodes this exact topic came up. Chamath Palihapitiya is one of the hosts and a really bright guy. He was a minority owner in the Golden State Warriors and I think when he bought in it was $25 million for 10% and when he sold out the value of the warriors has escalated to $5 billion so his stake would have been between $300 to $500 million (it was a phased sale).

He said he felt the super stars should be bonuses like top CEO’s with phantom shares. He felt Steph Curry should have got a piece of the enterprise value lift since he had a huge part in it.

Now this is pretty muddy area but Messi’s deal is complex but worth a study. His incentives are with Apple TV and Adidas are impressive but he also has equity in the team:

“Yet, the structure is unique with the team equity component, a compensation lever not available to players in other leagues. Messi is expected to exercise his ownership stake in the franchise after he is done playing with Inter Miami. There is no subsidy from MLS as part of the agreement. There is an option for 2026 for Messi to stay in MLS when the U.S., Mexico and Canada will host the World Cup.”

Chamath was riffing that it would be fun to start up a rival league to the NBA and use more unique compensation to attract the super stars.

Not sure I agree but if any player in the NHL should get a piece of the lift it would be McDavid. Now these guys already get endorsements so in my mind I think they are fairly compensated but I do get it for league altering talent where guys can bounce between leagues. MLS is onto something that is worth watching.

The Ottawa Senators have signed defenceman Jake Sanderson to an eight-year, $64.4-million US extension, the team announced Wednesday.

Sanderson had four goals and 28 assists in 77 games as a rookie with the Senators last season.

The contract, which pays him $8.05 US million annually, begins in 2024-25 and runs through 2031-32.

So in around their other core player salaries. If Perfetti has a big year he likely gets around their as well on a long term deal.

Ottawa is really leaning in as far as paying their young core and getting them locked up.

Just like we did back in the day. I think $8 million is the new $6 million. Probably pretty close in terms of % of cap as our core got.

Yea they will be getting cap leverage on all these deals too over the next 3-5 years.

Sure he would but, one solid year hasn't stopped the team before.

Ehlers, Conner, and Scheifele all inked a 7 plus year deals after a 60 point year. No reason to think the Jets won't do the same with Cole if he has a similar type year.
Let’s all hope the kid has a big year as long term Vs short term will be one of next summer’s big offseason discussions. I’m looking forward to seeing what the kids next level is.

If he gets off to a strong start and is healthy through January/February I see them doing a long term deal long before the season ends.

I think anywhere from 7X7 to 8X8, if he is on pace for 60 plus points.

Yup, he needs to have a healthy year. If he does the points and solid all around play will follow imo.

"In addition to Hart, several other players on the 2018 Hockey Canada World Junior team have also gone dark on their Instagram accounts. Twitter users noticed that Brett Howden of the Vegas Golden Knights, Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames, Jonah Gadjovich of the San Jose Sharks have also done the same, although some have claimed that Dube and Gadjovich were private already."

Dude is more concerned about personal glory then a Championship.

Well..... that didn't take long.

The cast of Spittin’ Chiclets took to their latest podcast and shared a story about word coming out of the Blue Jackets organization as it relates to the latest stunt Babcock is trying to pull. Apparently, Paul Bissonnette was called by a player and asked, “Did you hear what’s already going on in Columbus?” The story goes that Babcock called Boone Jenner into his office and demanded he give him his cell phone so the coach could go through the photos to see what type of person (captain) he had.

Some people will never change their questionable practices.

There has to be more to this. Babcock... he simply can't be that dumb to pull something like this off even before camp.

My guess is that he asked players to airplay some of their summer pics onto his screen while they were in control of their phones to get to know them better. That's giving him the benefit of doubt.

Or he could be a complete boomer asking people to hand over their phones to go through their pics.

I somehow doubt it's the later.
