Convo sure made a swift change this offseason from Matthews surely walking and is Arizona or LA bound, to now re signing with the Leafs and not getting enough term.

Don't think he or agent were gonna go over 4 years with anyone. And as a UFA he probably gets the same aav or more.

Nothing stops him from re-signing with the Leafs at the end of this deal, just like he did now. If the Leafs in year-3 of his deal want to go rebuild or a different direction, I can see advantages of having him 1-2 years remaining vs another 5-6 for an acquiring team, especially with the typical large signing bonus structure.
I think NHL would have loved for AM to go to Ari or LA... but I can never see the owners of Arizona getting close to a bidding war... and LA went for two more years of Kopitar

I think there was a trend of Americans wanting out of Canada and many were wondering if Matthew’s would be next given his really short original contract. On top of that the Leafs are the most hated fan base in the League so compound the speculation with wishful thinking and it was “trending”

Turns out AM is fine playing for the Leafs on his terms.

ok so just misguided hate.

which ever team signs AM it will probably be on a contract closer to his terms vs not. star players will have that power. especially w/ Matthews who not only is one of the best players on the ice, but id say one of the more popular/marketable players off the ice. I wish there was sort of an overall incremental net franchise value stat for individual players that would take things like that in consideration to determine all-around value.

Oh yeah, nothing says marketable like getting shit-faced drunk and dropping your drawers to moon a security guard.

Honestly, in some ways the term is not bad for the Leafs. They have a clear window to win the cup and it eats up all of Matthews 20’s, if his wrist problems continue to plague him then they aren’t stuck with him on a monster deal as he enters his 30’s. He’s a great player but his durability has been a cause for some concern.

Matthews has an awesome agent.
Toronto had zero choice but to give him whatever he wanted.
Personally I think it’s too much, but more power to him.

yup, it provides toronto with flexibility too if they want to move off matthews.

Does Toronto need players to be marketable to sell Torontonians on them? Yeah, we overpaid him but he’s marketable so it’s okay
if you re-read the post, it's about what he would do to other franchises not just specifically Toronto. Matthews going to a mid-market team does what for their overall value? id say increase it quite a bit :dunno:. he is going to command a contract more in-line to his terms than not with any team that would have signed him due to how good he is on the ice + what he imo brings to the franchise in terms of eye-balls or popularity.

I read the post, but I would argue Matthews’s popularity is because he plays in Toronto. Of course signing a superstar is good for marketing a team (any team) but I’m just adding an addendum to your thought in that I don’t think he moves the needle all too much when a lot of his fans would turn on him immediately if he left Toronto IMO

Toronto for sure helps. But I think personality wise, media presence he's one of the more outgoing players in the league. I'd think he'd be that way even if he wasn't in Toronto.
Anyway he's a super star, one of the top fwds in the league. Alot of the contract stuff will likely be closer to his terms given that for any team signing him.

Agreed. And now McDavid is licking his lips (metaphorically, that is. I’m not sitting across from him in a cafe or anything and looking at him).

Not that he wasn’t before though.

Dubas trapped Toronto by paying a premium for his core... that's why Matthews is getting 13m - otherwise he would have been a 9.5-10 guy for this contract
ridiculous. eichel got 10M off ELC and his numbers pale in comparison at the time of signing.

No one has ever claimed that Buffalo ownership group are not idiots. I mean the Skinner contract didn't exactly set the standard for the league either...

I would say a spoonful of misguided hate and one tea spoon of legit flight risk to the US trend speculation.

Carl Hagelin retires because of an eye injury he suffered during a practice maybe he should of wore his visor properly

Remember when Mario got a percentage of team ownership due to salary owing.
This is a really intriguing question. Could McDavid take a lower AAV in exchange for a percentage of ownership stake? I’m guessing there are CBA rules against it but in the real world this would be a legit possibility.
