Longterm contracts are the devil. Sure, there is security, but they do often end up with a bitter taste in the mouths of the players and the fans.
At the very least, Kopitar's didn't turn him into a pariah like Brown and Quick. Though, I do often wonder if his style of keeping gas in the tank for the long haul reduced the impact of letting it all hang out earlier in his career. Who knows what could have happened if he went for broke during his prime years.
Doughty's play will likely be serviceable at a minimum towards the end of his deal, just a question of whether his highly competitive nature will allow him to accept a lesser role without creating any issues. Based on the recent article and his outward vocalizations at the end of 2021, that is an area of concern.
