Count me as a guy that has zero excitement for Martinez or Quick getting a Cup with Vegas because I hate Vegas. They've got two Cups already. To be a Kings fan and actively root for Vegas--outside of SR10 since he lives there--is mind boggling to me.

Sure, I am fine with them playing well individually but you'll never catch me rooting for a Vegas/Anaheim/San Jose Cup win no matter the former King on their roster. My mom could be 4th line RW and I'd still want them to lose.
To be honest, I was never rooting for Vegas to win at all (the opposite, actually), but I was stoked for Quick to win it again. Yeah, he sucked his last year with the Kings, which necessitated his trade to get another goalie and defenseman, but I still feel like he was done dirty by Blake and I was happy to see it rubbed in Blake's face. Martinez (and Amadio)? Don't care.

Now comes all the yah yah lets re write the history bullshit. blake SHAFTED quick. Just like hes shafting us kings fans with his rebuild/retool/redo thats amounts to nothing more than job security for him and his cronys.
The treatment of the only conn smythe, 2 time cup winning tender by blake can only be described as criminal.

I didn't actively root for Vegas. The situation was just win-win for me. Former Kings getting new rings or Vegas getting defeated. Both outcomes were optimal for me.
Everyone's fandom is different. For me, there is only one optimal outcome since, by definition, it doesn't seem like there can be two optimal outcomes. Those two getting another ring is a "at least these guys I like got another ring" to try and feel better about the outcome: it just doesn't make me feel better at all since I loathe that Vegas fanbase.

But that's me. I don't think anyone is less of a Kings fan or anything for approaching it differently: I'm not that poster that questions fandom. I just think it is more fun to hate teams and never want anything good to happen to them or their fans.

For Quick though, it felt kind of lame since he didn't do much. Now we've got pictures of our guy skating around in a horrendous Vegas jersey hoisting the Cup.

Barf.

If he did that for Florida and they won, wouldn't gross me out and I would have been all on board.

In the end, none of it matters. It's just dumb fan stuff. I would have been losing my mind about this pointless stuff ten years ago though.

I know the Leafs don't get a lot of respect around here, but I just wanted to say they are all right. Let's not judge them and see who they truly are, our friends.

Campbell & Clifford for:

Trevor Moore
Pick #83 - Alex Laferriere

So I just wanted to say to the Leafs,

Cryin Ryan Smyth.

1. Demand a trade for $$$

2. Play dumb and accuse Bob Mackenzie of lying “I have no idea where that came from, I haven’t requested a trade”

3. Come clean about demanding a trade but then play the “safety of my children card”

4. Never apologized publicly for calling BM a liar.

Ryan Smyth was the Western Canadian Alexei Yashin

Didn't Lombardi also deny that Smyth had demanded a trade?

I'm not contesting your timeline or analysis I could just swear that I remember both of them publicly denying Mackenzie's report and I remember thinking it was peculiar as hell that both parties would deny the same rumor when it seemed likely to me that one of their camps was responsible for telling Mackenzie.

That whole thing stuck with me for years as feeling very unsavory but I could never find the articles that I thought I remembered reading about it at the time.

I'm certain Lombardi verified the trade request. Maybe he denied it initially, but once the ball was rolling he said something to the effect that he wouldn't have done it if it was solely a hockey move. But since it was a personal reason for the player he didn't want anyone unhappy here, so his hands were tied. I read that as he was bemoaning any type of leverage in a deal.

The best thing that ever happened was Calgary wanting Smyth, which I think surprised everyone. I think that got the deal done in a timely manner and ended up freeing up the space the Kings would use later to complete the roster.

He said it was for his kid's safety, but really, what pro hockey player can't find a safe spot and school to live in?

I think he just missed Edmonton where he was revered, he never wanted to leave. They didn't have the money to pay him what he wanted so they traded him, which I think blindsided him a little (even though he should have seen it coming). He ended up with the money but had to whine his way back.

Kings got Frasier + pick for Smyth.

Visnovsky returned Stoll and Greene.

It may have been denied at first but Smyth confirmed he requested a trade

At the time there was talk that he assumed he would be given a bigger leadership role and felt disrespected here as just one of the boys behind an extremely young captain. As with all things that could be BS, but at least its reasonable BS.

I'm pretty sure he wore an "A", but that could easily be true. It just seemed like he was making stuff up to get out as he certainly wasn't happy here. It worked out great for the Kings, obviously.

Smyth wanted his wife and kids back in Alberta. Why they could not be in Alberta with him in LA for 7 months is beyond me. Each to their own, was pissed that he put LA in a corner as he would only go to one team but also demanded a trade. For a while I remember Calgary was also in on him so I was hopeful LA would get something. But Smythe turned that down too. The situation was made worse by the Brule physical issue, and that made Edmonton look really bad. Luckily it all worked out really really well. Fraser solidified the fourth line, Smythe leaving gave cap room for Carter.

I was so pissed at Smythe at the start of that season, but by then I was laughing how it all worked out.
