It's funny hearing Brian Burke embellish how that deal went down. We all have that friend who exaggerates their stories....

TL;DR: If Burke doesn't make his overly complicated trade, he still gets the Sedins at #3/4 instead of #2/3. The Rangers draft Pavel Brendl #1. Atlanta takes Patrik Stefan #2.

That was one of the worst drafts in my memory. You had the Sedins in the first and then Havlat in the late first was good. Then three 7th rounders in Erat, who was good as well, Vrbata, who was even better, and Zetterberg, where they struck gold.

Almost devoid of star talent.

1996 was probably the only other one in the same ballpark. For me the difference was that scouts knew 1996 was bad while 1999 had the usual amount of optimism.

Burke's almost made a second career out of telling the Sedin draft story. I'm surprised he doesn't pat himself on the back more about the 1993 Chris Pronger trade up. He lucked out to a degree as the Sharks had a dysfunctional front office.

2nd overall pick Leo Carlsson with a goal and assist on the game winner. He played 22:37, second among all forwards (12 seconds behind Zegras).

Just another McDavid? Or is he ruined from being rushed? If my count is right, that's 3 points in his first 3 games.
Incredible that a team would be so reckless to play a rookie center and a rookie defenseman along with a second year winger that much. So risky.

Quick currently playing against the Oilers. Almost halfway through the game and he's pitching a shutout.

JQ coming into tonight:
2gp, 0.70gaa, .961sv%

Would be awesome to see him have another good game a have the Oilers lose again.

It's almost as if ANA has no other options at C....and no competitiveness to even try and make the playoffs......

What they really shoulda have done if they weren’t going to put them in the AHL is trade Terry, McTavish, and a 1st to get a 30 goal winger so they could fast track the rebuild.
They owe it to Cam Fowler and John Gibson to give them one last kick at the can. They're running out of time.
Edmonton without McDavid = San Jose. They are f***ing terrible, gonna have to bring in someone like Torts to even get a pulse.
What's the over/under on the number of Oiler jerseys that are thrown on the ice before Thanksgiving?

lol, Edmonton f***ing sucks without McDavid. Honestly, it is remarkable just how crazy good and dominant McDavid is to drag this trash deep into the playoffs :P
Just goes to show the importance of properly building around your core players, while also putting your young core in a position to succeed.

Ever seen a cobra spit venom? Head over to the Oil's board and ask innocently when management is going to get a better team for Woodcroft to work his magic with.

At least when we decide fate and projections after only 6 games into the season, we apply it to every team. Good on ya.

That, and to have at least one good core player on defense.

Line balance is what wins cups now, they have none of it. As much as we have our grievances with the Kings, the Alberta teams are a total shitshow.

I hope he keeps the fire up and goes out on a good note. He was fading into oblivion here and it was tough to watch. Even the best players need a wake-up call, I'm glad he wasn't as bad as he looked.
I think quick accepted his role with the rangers and just looks alot calmer. Alot less acrobatics and more just good positioning.
I dont think people realize the the athletic greatness of quick- i always say he's the best ive seen since hasek. And yes that includes lundquist and roy

Edmonton doesn't suck. Far from actually.

They're just having a rough go of it right now.
