Calgary Top 4 D looking not too shabby... and if they resign Stone in the 5/6 slot.

We don't have the assets to trade for a player like Hamonic. And there are no gamebreaker UFAs available.

This was a stand pat off-season. Unless something materializes out of thin air, we're going into next year with the a similar roster. Maybe we splash for a low risk high reward player like Williams. Maybe not.

Don't forget Sutter too. Those will go down as the single worse offseason moves in Kings history.

Other than resigning Sutter, Lombardi made good moves last summer. He signed a bunch of plugs to one year cheap contracts and did not sacrifice any of our assets. We needed those plugs until the kids were ready to be called up and fill in the spots. Last year, and probably this year, are just transition years until Kempe, LaDue, Brodzinski and others show what they are made of.

I have a strange feeling that LA goes after Hanzal.

And they should. All this chasing a scoring winger is solving a minor problem, not the big ones. I wonder had many people realize that as putrid as the Kings' offense was, with Kopitar floundering, Toffoli unable to perform, Brown with barely an offensive pulse and Gaborik MIA, with all of that, the boys still managed to score more goals than either one of our Stanley Cup winners. Here's the numbers:

GF
2012 - 188
2014 - 198
2017 - 199.

But hasn't the league average in goals gone up? Not really, goals per game were flat thru last year and rose .06 this past season. EN's are way up and fewer games go to shootouts. Defense will still win championships. Let's look where the real problem lies.

GA

2012 - 170
2014 - 168
2017 - 201

Anything stick out? Its obvious, Dowd -15, Martinez -17, Muzzin -21. Kopitar was a -10. That is not only bad but brutally bad. Kopitar needs shared help with the defensive burden and Hanzal can do that. The guy is huge, can be nasty and is great on faceoffs and to get anywhere in the playoffs we have to go thru Anaheim, they are the best by far on the dot.

A healthy Quick and competent backup will be very significant in helping the D. Getting a solid top 4 RHD will probably be impossible but you solve what you can. The Kings probably cannot get below 190 in GA without a Voynov type coming in but they can reasonably get to GF of around 224 with an average healthy lineup.

Carter 26
Toffoli 26
Kopitar 26
Pearson 26
Brodzinski+Gaborik 18
Brown 12
Hanzal 12
Doughty 12
Muzzin 10
Kempe 10
Martinez 8
Lewis 8
Shore 8
Clifford 6
Others 16

Is this so unrealistic assuming no abby normal injuries?

Get the GA down to 195 or so and you have the WC final team of 2012/2013 (projected out to 82 games).

Just do it Blakey.

Did you see what they gave up for Hamonic??

If we did that around here, I'd have to resign as a mod

I would do that deal in a heartbeat. Gives us a right handed defenseman for the second pairing: Muzzin-Doughty; Martinez-Hamonic; Forbort-LaDue.

Pretty awesome defense if you ask me. Getting Hamonic also gives us greater flexibility to trade a defenseman for a forward.

I agree with this reasoning. Also, if we get Hanzal (depending on the price and term he wants), we can slot him in the 2C spot and move Carter to wing with Kopitar.

Carter-Kopitar-Gaborik
Toffoli-Hanzal-Pearson

Come playoffs, we can spread out our top 6 and have three deep lines

Brown-Kopitar-Gaborik
Toffoli-Carter-Brodzinksi
Kempe-Hanzal-Pearson

Trying to get the GAA down to where it was in 2014/2012 is unrealistic IMO. Those were some of the best defenseive teams the cap era has ever seen.

Look at the defense we had:

2012:
Scuderi-Doughty
Mitchel-Voynov
Martinez-Greene

2014:
Muzzin-Doughty
Mitchel-Voynov
Martinez-Regehr

How are we supposed to match that? Muzzin has regressed. LaDue and Gravel are essentially rookies. Aside from Doughty there's no one on the current team in the same universe as Willie Mitchel defensively.

Trying to get GA down, how about not loosing #1 goalie for 60 games after 20 min to the season.

I totally agree,Blake needs to start improving this team. This team isn't a serious playoff team the last few years, and doing nothing is kicking the denial down the road while making excuses. The core is getting another year older, make this team a legit playoff team or start selling for prospects and draft picks.
