Hey look, it's Mikachu!

(Team Sweden's equivalent to the broadway hat.)

Lias had a nice play on this as well, stopping a player before he could get to Zib

think that guy was more concerned with taking lias away as an option than the other way around - but it was a nice play by lias to force the turnover. also love him recognizing the friendly coming in hot with a better opportunity to make a play with the puck, then heading straight towards the cage trying to get to an area to look for a pass. his small area game is awesome - thats very promising. you can teach/build the stride and explosion, you can't teach that short area quickness and instinct.

Lias looked like he first initiated contact and then lifted the stick of the guy he was covering and kind of bodied him so the guy wasn’t able to make the defensive play on that goal. If Lias didn’t do that I’m not sure that results in Mika scoring. Great play by both of them. Here’s a better look of Lias’ play

Agreed with the last part, he’s insanely good when it comes to ANYTHING around the net. Wish he was used as a net front presence on the PP. it’d be DEADLY with Mika sniping 1 timers, Lias in front, Shatty as the QB and Buch/Chytil playmaking on the RW. Sweden’s 1-3-1 on the PP during WJC was perfect for Lias and he really shines in that role. His skating will come along eventually like you said, for any doubters, see Draisaitl and Horvat. I don’t see high upside but I think we have a future captain in him and he’s someone that excels in high pressure situations. Since we’ve picked him everyone thinks we’ll only go for safe players now or make the wrong pick, Chytil was the high upside pick last year, we needed a player like Lias way too much for us to pass on him. Gorton knows what he’s doing.

this view changes things a bit - side of net angle looked different, lias def steps in front first and before the guy comes up and through him with the stick. regardless, nice to see the kid playing well and showing multiple dimensions of his game at a relatively high level.

edit: also a ht to you, you were correct - i had only seen the side cam vid. not that i in any way intended to start an argument - simply adding a thought to discussion, but only right to admit when wrong.

Has anyone else found the IIHF page for this event to be utter garbage? 90% of the time I can't access it; the page just times out. It's maddening. I could conceivably understand if there were a handful of big games going on that the site might buckle under traffic, but I can't even access it right now, when nothing is going on.

It's been incredibly bad. I've been using tsn on my laptop and just giving up if it doesn't load on my phone.

Latvia have looked really good this game so far. I seen pieces of their game against Norway; never would of guessed they would be able to skate with any of the top nations.

I thought it was just me

Latvia aren't trying to survive for OT, they're pushing hard.

PP USA incoming though.

This has been a surprisingly good game.

Keep in mind that the team has a legitimate coach and the core of the team is KHL’s Dinamo Riga. It’s nothing special in KHL but should be pretty good against non-top 6 nations and be able from time to time to make it competitive against the top 6.

I must be the only one who likes the new iihf website. Works faster and more organized than it used to be for me.
I don't have a problem with it when it actually loads. Some of the stuff is weird, like when you go to team > statistics, you have to scroll sideways through things instead of just having a neat table. And on the roster page, if you click on a goalie it gives you his stats as if he is a skater (goals, assists, etc.). There are easy ways around that stuff, it's just weird. The score ticker on the landing page lists all upcoming games as 0-0 final, the player stats in the post-game page seem to be missing a scroll bar so you can't see PIM or +/-, and so on. It just needs some tuning. It's okay overall, but they really need to fix their server issues.

I did not know this. Makes a tonne of sense; they were playing a very structured, well-organized, game.
