Could argue they got 3 possible potential NHL players for a rental. I would say value wise, yes at the time they could've gotten more.

Dubas trades in his Penguins tenure-

Bunting for Novak + L Schenn = WIN

Marcus Pettersson + DOC
for 2025/26 Rangers 1st +Melvin Fernstrom
+ Desharnais (Flipped for a 5th) + Heinen. = WIN

4th rd pick for Philip Tomasino = WIN

Lars Eller for a 3rd + 5th = WIN

Yager for McGroarty = WIN

Frasca for Glass + 3rd + 6th = WIN

Smith for 2nd + 5th = WIN

F/C for Kevin Hayes + 2nd = WIN

Ruhwedel for a 4th = WIN

Karlsson trade = This one is polarizing, value wise the Pens gave up 3 bad contracts for a 100 point dman at the time.. but I could see both sides to this.

Guentzel trade = same thing, can't say this is an L. The prospect the Pens got look great.

lol okay.

Over the last three years Novak has 72 5v5 points in 174 games.

Over the last three years Bunting has 81 5v5 points in 221 games.

Bunting's 4 most common linemates at 5v5 over the last three years are Matthews, Malkin, Nylander and Marner.

Novak's 4 most common linemates at 5v5 over the last three years are Evangelista, Sherwood, Jankowski, and Trenin.
So basically the same production level.

I've been told "Wait until he plays with Crosby or Malkin!" too many times to put much stock into the linemates argument. We'll see.

Again, I'm not mad at the trade it's just...pointless. They got a late 20's 40-50 point C/W for a late 20's 40-50 point winger. Whoopie. Acting like it's a big win for the Pens is so strange to me. It does nothing for the rebuild and they aren't good enough that it makes any difference whatsoever on the ice. Maybe things will become more clear with additional moves.

He has more points in about 200 fewer minutes at 5v5.
So what's that? 5 more points or something?

So they went from terrible to terrible +8. Look out!

How does adding a potential asset that you can get value for do nothing for the rebuild?

Which trade(s)?

Dubas has made three good trades in PIT.

Not sure why they wouldn't keep him. They have no one that can fill the 2C role once Malkin retires or is moved to the wing. He'd likely have higher value in the future by playing a full season as a 2C rather than where he's at right now.
100%

He'll have a lot of opportunity to recoup his value here either at 2C or 1LW.

So we're anointing a soon to be 28 yo who has averaged under 14:00/game as future 2C? Interesting.
Who's anointing? He's a guy with a history of decent production who could put up some numbers in a more offensively advantageous role than he got with the Preds.

Whether that means a resurgence here or someone to pump and dump for futures later, its better than Bunts.

You're using the same logic people used when they got Bunting. Mike Sullivan is not the guy to rebuild a player's value to flip later on.
Sure worked for Rakell.

Last offseason people here were wondering how much we'd have to add just for another team to take him.

Dis mfer from Toronto shows up to answer this lol

TOR fans reading the Pens boars are f***ing losers.
I'm from the GTA, but I'm not a Leafs fan. I became a Penguins fan during the 'X generation'. I loved their newer gold uniforms at that time, and Mario Lemieux was my favourite player along with Alexei Morozov.

Bunting is useless when he isn't on one of his scoring streaks, he had so many game where he kept losing the puck more easily than Tanner Glass. I hope Novak can offer at least something apart from scoring but let's see.

Wasn't a fan of Bunting here, at all really. Initially, sure - then he (sure - maybe he got Sullied) - just stopped stirring any pots and he couldn't crack the top 6 on this abysmal roster. Nor could he outperform any oppo bottom 6 players.

Finding any value here is worth it. Trade them all. Plus - fire Sullivan the moment we're officially out of the playoffs and don't second guess it. Let them team 'feel' in limbo as we head to Summer so you can officially 'shape' it over the Summer. Versus this slow piece mailed death sentence.

Agreed only trade not a win was the Karlsson one but that's because we floundered.

If we trade him in the office season and get a 1st + back we get a W
