QF pairings:

Canada - Sweden
USA - Czechia
Finland - Japan
Russia - Switzerland

With the round robin over, we know the first four teams that won't be medaling in this tournament.

god help czechia and sweden. could end really bad, like 15-0 or something.

finland - japan and russia vs swiss should be even games.

I'm sure it's because I suck at googling, but I can't find any highlights of the games... Someone can help me?

Good game, Canada. Well deserved. Excellent performance by your goalie and nice shot blocking. Hope to see you again in the gold medal game.
You are very generous. To be honest, I don't think the best team won. Should be a great final and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you guys won this time.

I haven't been active on this site much, but seeing Japan making this historic run is enough to drag me out of my hibernation.

Seeing them improve year after year, olympics after olympics, and putting in such a strong showing this tournament has been nothing but a joy to watch.

Their winning group B by literally the narrowest of margins is historic. With at least one more strong showing they can accomplish something truly groundbreaking and compete for a medal!

"Historic" run? Japan is presently ranked #6 in the IIHF World Ranking. And given the tournament format, with seeds #1-5 being in Group A and seeds #6-10 being in Group B, Japan's "historic" achievement is... beating teams that are all below them in ranking, teams they have been beating regularly?

For what its worth, women's hockey really only has a "Big Two", so drawing Finland for the quarters definitely gives them better odds for advancing than drawing Canada or USA (which are what the other two "lucky" advancers from Group B get when not eliminated outright - yeah, it's a questionable format), but, like I said, so far they haven't really done anything they haven't done a quite few times over these past few years. And I absolutely wouldn't treat it as a major sensation if they managed to beat Finland, too; it's definitely a lesser ask than beating Canada/USA, and anything can happen especially in single-game elimination.

Agree with everything but the only Czech goals were flukey. They shut it down! A magical knucklepuck and a reviewable play IMO on our other goal. They were definitely gassed and I've never seen a team purposely freeze pucks in 3 on 3. However, that was on the Czechs to counter that and they missed a lot of glorious chances.

I do think, now that I've really looked into the women's game that they need 2 pools. The strong pool still has blowouts and 3 to 9 seem pretty even. Happy for Japan. It wasn't lost on me that the greatest Czech victory was in Japan and now they took us out. Good for the sport. I think they'll have a close game with one of the 3. Czechs are going to get bombed right out the tourney. Shame as I liked their team, coach and everything to be honest. It's not like the men's team which is already giving me a headache and they haven't played a game yet.haha

I am really sad for the Czech Republic :-( They had a major chance win the group and get Finland in the quarters. That would have meant a decent chance to make the semis and grab the bronze medal. Instead they started their 2nd goaltender and seemed to take the Denmark game for granted as an easy win and that could be difference from the bronze and losing in the quarters. Obviously they had a second chance against Japan, but I think it was the Denmark game that sealed their fate. As its the Czechs first olympics, I guess it could still be viewed as a success, but I think the potential was there for much more.

My SDHL team Brynäs have Mrazova, Krizova and Kolowratova on the team and we also had youngster Sara Cajanova last season (I bought her game worn jersey), So I was really rooting for Czech Republic to win the group because I cheer for these players and also think CZ play great entertaining offensive hockey!

Will still cheer for them Vs USA of course and hope the miracle of all miracles to happen :D I dont like the new nickname Czechia though, I prefer Czech Republic!

Yes. Historic. Wether they were below them in IIHF rankings or not they still won more games at this olympics than they have at any olympics in the past and for the first time won their group. That by any definition is indeed historic. If they can get past Finland it would mean they would be competing for a medal and guarantee no lower than a 4th place finish which they have never done.

So yeah this is pretty historic for their program. Especially coming as far as they have in such a short period of time from their first non host qualification in 2014.

Deal with it.

I'm dealing just fine with the fact that Japan's doing exactly as well as they have done in major tournaments over the past half a decade or so. Right now, I'm having a hearty laugh at the expense of someone who thinks this is some kind of sensation. Getting past the next hurdle would admittedly be something that's not an everyday feat for them, but as I already said, I don't treat even that as a total long shot.

It would be historic if Japan beats the likes of Canada, USA, Finland, Russia and Swiss. Not the likes of Sweden, Denmark and Czechia.

Thank you.. we have no excuses... our team was full and assembled well. It just fell apart. Note I'm assuming a 5-0 loss or more against US ladies and already consider tourney over.

Czechia is an AWFUL AWFUL name and I can't even say it out loud without wincing.

We had all the possession but couldn't finish because our D would make mistakes.. against the Danes it was 3 brutal giveaways. Both goals against Japan you could freeze the frame and the goalie was on her back our of the crease and all our D were on their bellies. Looked like a bomb went off.lol

It's identical to the men's team unfortunately. Some shiney forwards with possession but the finish is missing and the PP dried up. The Denmark loss never hurt us to be honest. We had to beat Japan and it was a 1cm goal line goal but our shots in the shootout weren't good. We all deked into the Japanese goalies pads.

Credit to Japan.. they split with us last time and they beat us here... well done. I'm happy for their program and that they have a chance. More hockey nations the better!

I do dislike the format now... I think it worked and was successful but time to go to pools. The A pool did not prevent blowouts. So let's have blowouts. I'd much rather see some Czech/Japan/Sweden games agains Finns/Russia/Swiss ... my eyes tell me those are close and exciting games.

It shouldn't be surprising that Japan won group B, as they're 6th in world rankings. I could see them fighting for the 4th or 5th spot in world rankings before the next Olympics. Japan didn't just win the 2020 youth Olympics, they dominated like USA/CAN vs everyone else, so there's definitely some good up and coming talent.

This Czech Republic and USA game is getting surprising physical. The Czech's don't appear intimidated in the slightest.

USA got 2 cheap PPs, good of the CZ to hold the fort as the refs try to give USA the advantage!

Team Czech Republic needs to let go of their initial respect for USA and realize they are not superhuman. And f***** clear the zone instead of messing around with the puck. Peslarova is a good goaltender, she looks calm.

Holding out hope that Vanisvoa could cash if Czech can manage one or two shots on goal in the 2nd period!

The officials let several penalties go both ways which to me seemed really obvious....the too many players was a no brainer...but if she lets that puck go its a 2 on 1 or 2 on 0 so she had to play it.
