Olympics: Women tournament

I'd wanted to watch the Canada-USA game but fell asleep beforehand. Sounds like Canada was a bit fortunate. Should be able to watch them in the gold medal game though.
 
Japan up 1-0... all Czechs in 2nd and eventually scored. Surprised no video review as I think Japan had a kicking argument... great setup and effort with a weird looking finish on a partial breakaway.

They call taos after whistle here... not complaining but the penalty call was something i'm not used to seeing... Japan on powerplay
 
Czechs had majority of posession and shots that period but got in a lot of penalty trouble. The penalties are calls I'm not used to but no one seems outraged so I'm assuming it's my NHL type brain seeing it wrong. Eg. Japan shoots and Czech girl blocks it in the gut.. delay of game. Czech girl taps the pads after a save.. goalie interference. Japan girl and Czech girl skate into each other... roughing.

So, basically, Czech ladies need to stop going to the box! It was a 5 on 3 for over a minute to end period and Peslarova came up big.

When at 5 on 5... Czechs seem to have possession and nice setups but the finish lacks a bit. No Czech D stands out for me. Looks like strong forwards, average D and a good goalie to me. Japan works hard and capitlizes but I wouldn't say they are out posessing or dominating at even strength.

The quality is there... but it is a far cry from US and Canada. This game is good but I can't see the loser coming within 5 of the US.
 
Japan capitlizes on third penalty in a row.. hit a post but got rebound... Czech D flopped everywhere and goalie scattered on ice. Gotta stop taking penalties... 3 powerplays in a row for Japan in a game where we are controlling evens.
 
Japan with a massive chance and huge save.. then a lot of scrambling in Japan end and a goal... a goddam KNUCKLEPUCK... I'd love to say it was a SNIPE.. but it was a flutering knucklepuck in a shot that only Disney could create.lol Over the goalies back
 
blatant tripping missed earlier but our 5 on 5 has yeilded a powerplay. Japan is much calmer than our Czech ladies so I expect a good PK from them. Goalie has been good.
 
Brilliant PP countered by a good goalie and the second it ends.. Czechs are called for another penalty. Japan to PP.. I fully expect them to score and go up 3-2.... this game is all about Czech penalties.

When Czech ladies aren't in box.. they dominate possession... we had a breakaway for our best player Vanisova and she missed by a little.

Japan has been very discliplined and counter attacked very well. The knucklepuck actually want over a standing defender and goalie... I hope I can find a gif of that shot. Unlucky for Japan to be honest.
 
and a shootout.. Japan laid back and defended mostly... Czech ladies blasting slapshots and a gorgeous chance with 1 second left. Japanes Goalie has been excellent... I feel we have the better forwards and goalie for the shootout... so let's see how it goes. It's funny becaue both Czech goals were flukes but we have talent. Both Japanese goals were very nice skill plays. A shootout almost seems fair. Weird game. Glad refs cant't call anymore penalties... speaking of Czech ladies.. conggrats to Ester for our first Gold!
 
and Czech ladies are done.. 5 very weak shootout shots IMO. Japanese Goalie was great and didn't flinch once. The goal that went in didn't get more than 1 inch past the line. Just say there by about 1 inch. 2 fluke goals but Czech ladies couldn't get 1 nice goalies.. Japan got 3 in fariness and played very disciplined. Good luck to them against Swiss/US/Russia... we're done. Slaughter incoming.

Shots were 38-25 Czechs
Czechs were 0 for 3 on PP
Japen was 2 for 4 on PP

Shame but no complaints... I knew it'd be a 1 goal game. Hope the Czech lady that took a puck to head and didn't return is ok!
 
Great game by Japan. They must be happy to dodge the US.

For future stuff, Japan will have to wait and see if they will face either Finland or ROC.

If Finland wins on regular time with +2 or more goal differential, they will face Japan.
In any other scenario ROC will face Japan.

RIP to the Czech's. They played well against Japan, but they couldn't handle Japan's PP. I wish both teams got to face SUI/FIN/ROC, but unfortunately that's not how things work. Hopefully neither team gets slaughtered in their next game.

Japan truly is a one line team with Toko, Shiga, and Ukita (over 26 minutes each). Playing them on the PK too definitely shows a lack of depth for Japan. They were once again gassed at the end of the game.

Some head scratching decisions on the back end for Japan. They seem to refuse to go D to D on the outlet and instead forced several pucks around the boards leading to extended zone time for the Czech's. They should've made the Czech's chase instead of taking everything to a board battle, which is a lost cause given their size. They also look like they don't even know how 3 on 3 works. Several forced passes and dump ins when possession is the most important part of 3 on 3. What is the head coach of Japan even teaching these women? This is basic stuff.

Yeah Japan is super gassed late to the game, especially because they dont play their 4th line at all. They just play 3 lines and 3 pairs which is pretty suicidal.

US had chance after chance in the 1st but couldn't put the puck away. 53-27 in shots on net.. Canada put the puck in when they had the chance. Also Canada didn't rattle when they went down 2-1.

So Finland needs 3 goal win against ROC? 2 won't cut it?
