I have no problem saying that Bouchard has a Smythe worthy playoffs going this year or at least very close to it but it's still 99.5% going to be McDavid or Drai winning if the Oilers win the SC.
Oh yeah I expect that too. Probably should be Bouch, but McDavid will get it.

Bouch can gave another go at it next season. ;)

I've been saying this too, but for every game being played I'm starting to believe Bouch just might take it if the Oil go all the way.

All things equal they'll give it to McDavid every time, though, and you can't really go wrong there I suppose.

Maybe many people will disagree and I don't pretend I've seen all games, or even close to the majority. That said, I think Otter is in the running for sure and is my pick if I had to choose today. I'm going to start referring to him as OtterBox, because that dude is unbreakable. Dallas has two guys (Heiskanen and Oettinger) who just seem to go from great in the regular season to nearly unstoppable in the post-season.

McDavid has been underwhelming to me, which goes to show how truly outstanding of a player he is. I'd lean Bouchard or Draisaitl for Edmonton right now.

Shesterkin is definitely my pick for the NYR. He's probably the best goalie in the league if we combine regular and post-season.

Panthers, I'm picking Barkov. That guy does everything you could ask for in a player. I thought for sure he was going #4 in his draft year despite some hype and I was shocked when he went #2. He's totally lived up to his potential and then some.

All that said, I'll say Otter for now. The next 6+ games could swing my opinion in a lot of directions. For all the whining about the first two rounds, the ECF and WCF have been amazing series's to watch.

I think if Dallas wins the Cup Miro would be the frontrunner.

Then Otter, then probably Johnston.

Edmonton probably the only team that has player who could be awarded the Conn Smythe even if they lose in the finals.......not sure who else you could say that for.

Draisaitl was in the driver seat for awhile, doing his best Malkin impression, but McDavid has retaken the wheel this series.

That said, anything can happen. I do think if the Oilers advance, McDavid is going to have the kind of SCF that the true greats have all had, ala Gretzky 11 points in 5 games in 1985, 11 points in 7 games in 1987, 12 points in 4 games in 1988, and Lemieux’s 19 points in 10 games in 1991 and 1992.

He doesn't even need that type of final to win the Conn Smythe as he'd probably break Gretzky's single playoff season assist record and that alone would impact the voters.

I’d rather he does, so it’s just one more thing where he decisively runs the so-called current #5 off the ice.

Even if McDavid does break that record it doesn't automatically vault him to 5th all time.....yet.

But it sounds like a narrative you are all in on right?

It’s inevitable. I agree that I’m in no rush to do so. Few more seasons and it’s official across the board from the hockey world. If he retires after a long healthy career, we should also not be shocked to see only Gretzky definitively argued above him.

@Grifter3511

I agree Mario is the better player. Gretzky and Lemieux will always be my favorite players.

But if McDavid blends the peak of Orr and Lemieux, who had shorter careers, with the peak/longevity of Howe, while doing so in the modern game, there is going to be an extremely vocal and large crowd that only sees him second to Gretzky. Sprinkle in an influx of hockey fans born post 2005 who will only know McDavid as the best by the time he retires around 2035, and it’s just reality.

I'm not so sure about that as Orr, even in his short time, had such a huge impact on not only the game but tilted the ice probably more so than any player in history.

Personally I think Mario is the "weak link" of the Big 4 and don't think the difference between him and Crosby is all that great given league dynamics and a whole picture look at everything.

That being said a lot of people aren't going to look beyond points in their all time evaluations.

McDavid is contributing, ok, there's another thing I'm noticing, opponents are preparing against the Oilers with McDavid in mind (of course, they've always done that), the second goal today on the power play makes that clear, I'm not a hockey expert but this season and McDavid's playoffs seem strange to me, he seems clearly below his potential. I don't think he's missing anything, he's only 27 years old.

So far Conn Smythe is waiting for someone to take the lead in this final stretch, there are many candidates at a similar level of performance.

He isn't 100% which is even more impressive. Its been a season of injury for him

If (big if) the Oilers win game 6, they won't play again for nearly a week, which I think would be big for both McDavid and Draisaitl, who are playing through stuff these playoffs.
