Which team is in the worst situation?

I only voted for Vancouver due to the fact for the past 6 month they seem to change the idea of what kind of team they want to be on a weekly. basis. I think their owner is on Katz level of interference with some of the stuff he does.

Most of have an idea of just what the Canuck can do to get to the next level but it could take some interesting math.

Due to their depth and contracts coming up--I can see why people have a problem with the Miller contract. I can see the canucks trying to find a buyer for the Myers contract in the off season. If they can move the OEL contract they would be able to keep all their good young players who are up for new contracts

Some very good arguments for several teams, but I have to go with Arizona.

Bad owner. They lose a ton of money since forever. They played in a 5000 seats college arena.

Since forever they can’t develop prospects to save their life. They can’t attract free agents.

They don’t have a large fanbase.

They are totally irrelevant.

I'm just glad a list like this can be made and it doesn't include Ottawa

Montreal is fooling themselves over how their rebuild is going. By the time they figure that out and head into rebuild number 2 they are likely to try and rush that second rebuild. It's a recipe for a team that could stay at the bottom for a long time.

I see it playing out similarly to what happened in Buffalo and Arizona, an initial failure of a rebuild followed by a bunch of half **** rushed rebuild. Buffalo seems to have got the hang of it this time and I see some good signs in Arizona, but they do need a few more years and maybe a lottery win.
disagree, and Ive been the Habs biggest critic for the pat 15 years in terms of starting a proper rebuild.

They already have a very good young core in Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Slafkovsky, and Guhle, and have very promising players in Hutson, Roy, Beck, Mesar, and Mailloux in the wings.

Add the two 1st picks this summer (a top 6 and top 12 or so), and theyll probably get another relatively high pick in 2024. Whats not to like?

No way this is comparable to an Arizona situation. They havent even landed their 1C yet after al these years and are about to trade Chychrun! Their future as we speak is Dylan Guenther and 24 year old Keller.

I feel like Vancouver could be a playoff team easily if they had the right coach....there a lot worse off teams in the NHL.

The answer should be Sharks or Flyers. Neither got any prospects, both with a ton of terrible contracts they won't be able to get rid of, and they both refuse to admit that they're bad. Most likely at least a 10 year outlook before any of them are ready to compete again.

Arizona don't have an arena, sure, that's not good. They do, however, have a solid bunch of prospects to build around, stacked with picks in the upcoming drafts, and no terrible contracts that limits them. Solid outlook other than the arena situation.

Some people are also mentioning Chicago. Don't agree with that either. They're very well set up to start their rebuild after this season. Should gain a lot of extra picks in the next two drafts at the deadline and after that it's basically only the Seth Jones deal left that looks bad. They probably need that one to reach the floor though.

Lastly, I don't agree with the people mentioning Vancouver either, although I don't think their situation is any good. Elite, young 1C and 1D to build around, but surrounded by a bunch of awful contracts. Not optimal, but still not as bad as the Flyers or Sharks.

Don't worry. We've been assured their new arena will fix many issues.

Arizona is at least tanking to rack up high, franchise-altering picks. Plus they have already have 30 picks over the next 3 drafts. Would much rather completely bottom out and do a proper rebuild than be stuck in the middle.

My problem with Arizona is the ownership lol

It's the single most important thing, because otherwise, Arizona is in a better place than Philly and and Vancouver I agree

But your future is uncertain so...

I don't see any of these as being top line\ top pairing players you can build a team around. This is why I think the Habs are fooling themselves about where they are. Worse, these are the type of players who will be just good enough to keep the team from getting a top 5 draft pick but not make the playoffs.

Nothing really special here, every team has prospects of this caliber.

If they get Bedard they end up more or less the Oilers, if they don't they are end up as a weaker version of the Canucks.

I like Cooley better than any player or prospect the Habs currently have. He was a little higher risk than Wright or Slafkovsky on draft day but it seems to be paying off.

Another high pick this year gives them a second star, Maccelli is a contender for rooky of the year and I like Gunther and Geeky at least as much as anyone in the Habs prospect pool. Depending on what they get for Chychrun they could add to that, and of course Bedard is a real possibility. Without Bedard they don't look like they are building an elite team, but I think they will be a playoff team in a few years.

Looking at the next five years, I think San Jose are in the worst shape.

Anaheim has a deep prospect pool and could start waking up in a few years.

I'd say it's pretty close between Vancouver, Philly and San Jose. I went with Vancouver as I feel they have the worst contract situation and bare cupboards.

i went with sj due to their contracts and prospect pool

i can see vancouver or philly being an answer since management is on the wrong page.

I could see an argument for any of Philly, Florida, San Jose.

Philly will have to deal with the wreckage Torts leaves behind, don't really have any apparent "top flight" franchise changing prospects in the pipeline, and they've got a terrible set of pretty much completely unmovable contracts. They do have some other good assets that will help their outlook if Fletcher can move them for something decent...but then, that's not a safe bet.

Florida are in a bad spot to me. They're a better team than others right now, but they're capped out, don't have any futures in the pipeline or any draft picks to spend until a zillion years from now. They've also got some real kneejerk ownership who appear overly involved. They're a weird one, being much closer to being good...but they've dumped everything they have into being...not really good enough. Awkward.

San Jose also stand out to me as having some bad contracts that they're stuck with. But if Karlsson's resurgence somehow gets them out from under that one, that'd massively swing their outlook. So probably not them. Though in the short-term...yeah. And their prospect pool is weirdly empty for a team in their situation.

I can see why people are suggesting Vancouver. They've got some bad contracts, an overly involved meddling ownership, and probably aren't going to be bad enough to get into the very top of the draft. But it's hard to say that a team with a really good young #1C, a really good offensive catalyst of a defenceman on the back end, and a young starting goaltender are really in the "worst shape". A lot of the dead weight contracts only have a year and a half left and will either expire or be movable next year. The OEL one is the big issue, but they'll eventually start to climb out from under the other deals. They've at least got some building blocks in place.

Only the Sharks challenge Vancouver here, but at least they know they have problems and aren’t ran according to the deusional whims of a child abusing assclown.

Suzuki and Caufield arent top line players? what??? that a joke?

Every team has a Lane Hutson? really? Hes putting up Makar numbers in the same league at the same age. His knock is his size. Id like to see how many teams have a dman with those numbers.

You underestimate their young D core. Guhle was having a great rookie season if you havent noticed, no question he'll be top pairing. All around beast.... Mailloux 12G 26P in 30GP in London so far. Not impressive enough?..... Harris is looking decent in his rookie season on a bad team. Barron a former 1st rounder, has a bit of growing to do. Xhekaj a physical beast, Im sure youve heard... They may not have a franchise #1D a la Makar, Fox, Heiskanen, etc. But they have very good young depth. You cant say "every team" has that at all.

Roy best player in the Q, 72G 170P in his last 95GP + 23P in 11 playoff games, and just impressed quite a bit in the WJC. Yeah "just another prospect". Please.

Beck had 40P in 30GP in Mississauga, and plays a strong 2 way game, 13th forward on team Canada.

Its all good young depth, and better than most teams. I mean they DO have one of the best prospect pools in the league believe or not.
If they get Bedard they end up more or less the Oilers, if they don't they are end up as a weaker version of the Canucks.
You dont know any of that.... Oilers dont have a Caufield who already on pace for 40+ goals in his 2nd season, can only get better. They dont have a Slafkovsky who could develop into a top power forward in the game. They dont have the young D depth other than what, Broberg? They already shot themselves in the foot with Nurse's contract. Habs may have better coaching, and find a better goalie in the UFA in 3-5 years. Dumb comparison.

See the Leafs for the recipe on how to screw up and otherwise potentially promising rebuild.

Philly looks the grossest. Sketchy GM, unstable coach, length bad contracts, injury riddled

They need to scorch their entire franchise and start over imo

Edmonton is a bubble team with prime McDavid, while having a weak prospect pool. They're in for a world of pain soon

The one with a 296 year old president of hockey ops

And the worst owner in the league.
Edmonton? What’s wrong with Bobby Nichs (outside of the hockey Canada scandals).

A team struggling for playoff success with the best player to come into the league is in far worse shape than the Canucks. If he ends up walking they go back to contention of racking up 1st overalls
