Which team is in the worst situation?

it's close but Vancouver...the team is straddling the line between "rebuild" and mediocre...not bad enough for a super high pick but not good enough for a playoff spot
not to mention bad contracts all over the place (Miller, Boeser, OEL, Garland) that are almost impossible to move without a sweetener and players they should keep they can't now (Horvat) and their core centerman not signed long term (Pettersson)
oh, and no blue chippers on the way since Benning traded away a lot of draft picks

people saying Chicago are nuts...Toews and Kane off the books soon, and Jones is their only long term deal and at least he's a good d-man, plus they're horrible enough to get a really high pick
Spot on about Chicago. If they land Bedard they’ll have a warp speed rebuild.

Should add Toronto the the poll for longterm vote. They have this year and lots of uncertainty going into next offseason.

Will have to go through TB and possibly BOS and don't see that going well.
Dubas or Shannahan on hot seat if they get bounced 1st round.

Aging D core with no clear cut #1 coming down the pipe.
If Matthews and Nylander leave, they will need a retool at minimum

Piece of shit organisation. I can’t believe they are literally and openly looking for a new coach while Bruce is still here. Every team would have agreed to let quit hire an intern while looking for a new head coach. I forever hate our owners.

I dont understand anyone saying Van and Philly when Pittsburgh exists.

What group holds the most value:

Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Petry, Rust, Rakell, Pickering
Oe
EP, Hughes, Kuz, Boeser, Horvat, Miller, Demko, Podkolzin, Lekkerimaki
Or
Konecny, Couturier, Provirov, Hart, Hayes, Laughton, Farabee, Gauthier

Its pretty easy Phily and Vancoucer, especially when you consider that Sid has 3-4 more years and it is extremely unlikely hes ever traded away.

You dont know any of that.... Oilers dont have a Caufield who already on pace for 40+ goals in his 2nd season, can only get better. They dont have a Slafkovsky who could develop into a top power forward in the game. They dont have the young D depth other than what, Broberg? They already shot themselves in the foot with Nurse's contract. Habs may have better coaching, and find a better goalie in the UFA in 3-5 years. Dumb comparison.
Caufield? What? Leon Draisaitl is a repeat 50/50 player, how are we missing a guy that can get to 40+. He would be extremely lucky to become as good as Drai.

Of course Drai is better than Caulfield. But the Oilers have no such player that's 22 and under and still in his entry level deal.

Will the Oilers even still have Drai in 3 years? Oilers won't be going anywhere with 2 players at $15M per, that's for sure.

If the Oilers don't win in the next 2 years, they'll be rebuilding for a decade again.

 Can always guarantee a bias fan throwing Toronto into this.

The Leafs are actually set up pretty well, they have no crippling long-term deals, and the only players with term beyond the next 2 years are Jarnkrok and Morgan Rielly, who are both good players and can also probably be moved if need be. They have a very flexible situation, and should things be headed in a bad direction they can pivot and easily trade pieces away and begin a retool or rebuild rather easily. We will get a clear picture this summer as Matthews will be eligible for an extension. As much crap as Dubas has gotten for his cap management, he's only given big money deals to his star players, and has never committed big term or dollars to players who are not core pieces, which is a mistake that many other GMs make.

Your comment about D core is actually very wrong, Rielly is still in his prime, Sandin and Liljegren are developing really well and are very young still, and Timmins has been an excellent acquisition as well. We also have some pieces in the pipeline like Niemela that are under the radar. The other vets all have their deals expire in the next 1-2 years. Dubas has also drafted well since being GM and the prospect pool has been gradually built up. Many of our prospects drafted in the last few years are progressing well in their respective leagues.

Our situation is nowhere near the other teams mentioned here.

It's such an easy decision too. Yeo sucks but he can at least be an interim coach.

Why would the Oilers have such a player? We have been in the playoffs the last 3 years in a row and aren't currently rebuilding... Is that why we are even included in the thread, because a star player is 3 years from UFA? Should we add any other teams that have their best players going to UFA in the next 3-5 years?

Actually not, they now have to worry about Matthew’s, Marner and Nylander again, because they only signed 5-6 year deals.

All I was doing was responding to the other poster who said "the Habs will be like the Oilers if they were to get Bedard". My response was the Oilers didnt have the same pieces the Habs have now, ie. they didnt have a Caufield, several D prospects, etc.

But yes I agree, the Oilers have no business being in this poll. I answered Philly fwiw.

Its the Nucks by a margin. Poor roster, poor cap situation, unlikely to get Bedard. Ugly, ugly situation with Bruce. Grim situation really.

Why is Edmonton in this poll lol.

San Jose, Vancouver, Islanders

All of them are mediocre/bad with a bunch of bloated contracts and have the longest roads to contender status.

Even if they win the Bedard lottery, the Habs don't have pieces that will be as good as the supporting cast Edmonton currently has. The Oilers are the ceiling for what the Canadians are currently assembling, and that's IF they win the lottery for the second year in a row, and IF Bedard meets expectations.

There are 10 team options in this poll. Edmonton currently has the 6th most votes, more than 4 other teams so not sure why you would question them being in the poll than other teams, in particular Anahiem who clearly have been the least popular option.

I didnt vote for the Oilers, but blowing 8 years of a generational talent and never improving their possibility of success is pretty brutal and def worthy of consideration Steven..

Oilers have been trying to build around McD and Drai with guys like RNH, Lucic, Neal, Puljujarvi, Kasssian, Chaisson, Hyman, and Kane..... Needless to say, IT HASNT WORKED.

Oilers never had a young developing top sniper like Caufield on the wing, never had young big skilled wingers in Dach and Slafkovsky, and they sure as HELL dont/didnt have the defensive prospects in: Guhle, Hutson, Mailloux, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron.... I guarantee Hughes wont be giving $9M per to Guhle when the time comes like Nurse either.

Totally different teams.

You are wrong, but why would we be interested in "what the Oilers had" what's relivant is whether the Canadains young players project as being as good as what the Oilers have.

Caufield does not project to be as good as Draisaitl
Slafkovsky does not project as being as good a power forward as Kane
None of Guhle, Hutson, Mailloux, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron. project as being as good as Nurse, Bouchard or Broberg, etc

A things stand now, what the Habs are building towards is being a weak-sauce version of what the Oilers would be without McDavid. Unless something major changes, they are going to max out as a bubble team then go right back into tank/rebuild mode
