Which team is in the worst situation?

  • Total voters
    600
  • Poll closed .
There are 10 team options in this poll. Edmonton currently has the 6th most votes, more than 4 other teams so not sure why you would question them being in the poll than other teams, in particular Anahiem who clearly have been the least popular option.

I didnt vote for the Oilers, but blowing 8 years of a generational talent and never improving their possibility of success is pretty brutal and def worthy of consideration Steven..
You can always count on an inordinate amount of Oilers haters to vote for them in a negative poll, so I don't really care about 15/539 votes being for them.

Oilers are very clearly in better shape than any other franchise listed.

As far as "never improving their possibility for success", lol ok beez. Look back at what the franchise looked like in 2018-19 under Chia. Since then 3 (soon to be 4) postseason appearances, just went to the final 4. Finished 2nd in the division 3 years in a row with a good shot to win the division this year.

Only worth consideration if you ignore all other team options listed here.

You are wrong, but why would we be interested in "what the Oilers had" what's relivant is whether the Canadains young players project as being as good as what the Oilers have.

Caufield does not project to be as good as Draisaitl
Slafkovsky does not project as being as good a power forward as Kane
None of Guhle, Hutson, Mailloux, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron. project as being as good as Nurse, Bouchard or Broberg, etc

A things stand now, what the Habs are building towards is being a weak-sauce version of what the Oilers would be without McDavid. Unless something major changes, they are going to max out as a bubble team then go right back into tank/rebuild mode

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the Oilers with McDavid and Draisaitl have been marginally better than the Oilers would have been without them.

I say marginally only because they currently sit in the Wild Card - missing the playoffs by 2 points or 100 points is essentially the same thing 8+ years into the careers of the best players on the team.

However, if McDavid slows down from his absolutely torrid pace, or if the Oilers power play slips/they get less power play opportunities, Edmonton is in a world of trouble.

Or, you know, you could use logical context before making absurd observations after a 45 game sample size. If you truly believe Edmonton is a wild card team when the season ends, send me a dm and we can make a large wager. They’ve had a very tough schedule/one of the easiest remaining, injuries to key positions, and inconsistent goaltending/on the significant up.

They have a better chance of winning the division than they do to come in a WC spot.

You're not wrong.

The sample size is small.

So, let's make it bigger.

Since McDavid joined the league, Edmonton fares like this:

Let's compare them to a few other teams.

Edmonton is 17th in league points.
They have relied on McDavid and Draisaitl to an extreme level.
This season, they've taken their reliance on the power play and on McDavid and Draisaitl to an extreme and sit in the Wild Card.

As of today, Edmonton sits 11th in the league, with 57 points in 48 games.
Teams like Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Colorado have 54, 53, 53 points in 45 games each, well within reach, and LA and Calgary are right on their heels.

So much is questionable about this post.

The Oilers aren't in a WC spot smart guy.

And also why does the Pens being at 53 points matter?

And also one of Minnesota/Col will be in the Central top 3.

And Why exactly does the standings since 2015 matter lol? Lets look at the woodcraft era, which also coincides roughly with when Kane joined the team, that shows the current main makeup of the team nicely.

NHL team stats

53-27-6, 112 points (4th most), .651 p% (4th), 45 RW (2nd), 323 GF (1st), 260 GA (17th).

You can also look at the team over the last 3/4 years (Hollands tenure) and they are 9th or 10th best in the league over those spans.

Team has been very good for a long long while now.

Canucks are only 14 points out of a playoff spot, but **and importantly** have TWO games in hand on 2nd wild card Calgary. Canucks also have two games AGAINST Calgary so those are really like 4 point games so realistically the Canucks are only 6 points back, got a new coach, recently won a game, Myers is still growing, Eriksson contract is over, and Brock Boeser is getting back into forum.

Honestly I’d put my Flames up there. If we went through a rebuild I think we’d have some pretty interesting veteran pieces to trade(Backlund, Tanev, Toffoli, Hanifin). We got a player in Dustin Wolf at the second most important position to build around.

However, we all know we’re going to hold onto our vets for like 5 years to try and fight for the last playoff spot, like always. By that time the vets have no value.

We will likely mismanage Dustin and our other AHL prospects (Zary, Pelletier, Poirier). We likely won’t have a chance to sign Coronato with Sutter’s comments on small players.

None of Guhle, Hutson, Mailloux, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron. project as being as good as Nurse, Bouchard or Broberg, etc

Guhle and Hutson at the very least are going to be better than those, hands down lol

C'mon now

Nurse is a glorified #2 dman, and it's pretty much the best you have

In that order. Chicago have picks and prospects and will get more from moving out vets. Anaheim have young talent just need to add more and surround them with vets. Vancouver have god young talent they just need to move out some bad contracts and quick rebuild. Other than those all other options are so far off it's not worth explaining.

For me it's between San Jose & Philly. Two complete middle of the road teams that don't have strong prospect pools or young franchise cornerstones and couldn't decide which direction they wanted to go in.

San Jose has guys like Couture, Vlasic, and EK on expensive, long-term deals. No clue why they extended Hertl who is 30 and doesn't fit their window.

Meier is the only piece they can really flip into a valuable asset. I think they will be bad for a long time.

Why is Vancouver winning this so handedly? EP, Hughes, and Demko gives them a franchise cornerstone at all 3 key positions + they should get a really solid return for Horvat. Signing Miller and losing Horvat was def a mistake though.

Edit: Totally forgot about Chicago. They are in horrible shape, that's my pick.

Agreed, I would pick San Jose where EK looks terribly lonely and lack of really good prospects. Canuks have plenty of talent, if they would be able to build a game plan around that they are a PO team.

Karlsson makes $11.5M a season in California and gets an extended vacation. Can't be all that bad.
