Trade him so we don't have to go through 3 years of "coach hates him" "he's a bust" "he's a star, okay if only he could make the NHL" ...

Send him back to junior and let him get stronger.

Burning a year of his ELC for a 48 game schedule makes the decision more complicated then normal.

You'd have to believe that in order to go down this road management has to believe he will not only play but be able to contribute regularly to a team that hopes to challenge for a playoff spot.

Agreed.

The only reason he should stay up is if management feels that he can significantly upgrade what we currently have.

And I'm just not convinced that there is ANY way that management/coaching can feel that he can contribute to a successful run into the playoffs - especially without the benefit of pre-season games (ala. Jake Gardiner).

Why send him down? He plays with a team of losers anyways, it wont hurt his development losing in the NHL on yet another team of losers.

If Burke said Rielly is the real deal and who he had as #1 in that draft. He will play, Yak is playing, the kid is not a kid he is decent sized and talented. He is going to play if only for his Ego's sake.

Burke said he and Nonis have never kept a 18yr old up - if it was up to them, he'd definitely be going back to Moose Jaw.

However, before getting canned, he said it was up to Randy to decide since he did keep Fowler up in Ducks land at the same age.

Me thinks he's gone after 5 regardless of how he does - hopefully Gardiner will be fully ready by then.

I don't care if this kid looks like Bobby Orr version 2.0 in camp, get his ass back to junior and let him learn the game and develop confidence. He missed almost the entire season last year, give him a chance to play a full campaign in junior as a top pairing defender before you throw him into the NHL without the benefit of a real pro training camp. In fact, if Reilly does look like Bobby Orr version 2.0 with the Leafs, it's all the more reason to send him back. Why waste a year of his entry level deal on a half season? We don't need to rush him.

Wasn't Schenn 18 or was he 19?

Haven't heard much about Rielly at camp, but with Fraser and Tostka playing well (outplaying Komo too) I wouldn't be surprised if they send Rielly directly back to junior without seeing game action.

Yes to all of this. This is the way I'm thinking, I don't care how good he looks, the smart thing to do is send him back, it might be tough for him to accept but how many times do we hear players going back to junior, and then completely breaking out. Why does that happen? Simple, they get a taste of NHL action, they'll take any positives out of that and think to themselves " I just spent a few weeks in an NHL camp!" they'll look at junior like it's pee wee hockey. It just helps them mentally to know that they're on the right track and it'll motivate them to get better. I bet when he gets sent back down he's going to explode even more for Moose Jaw.

Sometimes its better to let these kids ride the wave of confidence. Being sent back doesn't = better development in all cases. Crosby sure looks to have been stunted by going direct to the NHL, Stamkos etc etc... You don't hold special ones who have size back.

Schenn was not hurt by entering the NHL to young, he was hurt by Ron Wilson style hockey, just the same as Komi. People can't wrap their bloody heads around the concept of...You dont try and run a big rig on the F1 course and expect it to keep the pace! Schenn would do better under Carlyle but it was already to late for him anyways he was mentally done here, you could tell.

Rielly isn't the Crosby or Stamkos of defensemen. I think we'll disagree on this one, I think Schenn was stunted with being rushed, expectations grew after having a great year, he got to RFA status quicker which meant more money quicker, which meant more pressure quicker. He wash't ready but as always we rushed a guy here because he looked good in camp..every other team in this league does it proper but somehow we have this notion that we have to keep them up. Rielly physically and age wise isn't ready for the NHL yet IMO
