Schenn could not skate though.

A year in junior would not help that. He just can't skate. He might be good in a different system like Nashville maybe, but he'll struggle with the Flyers too.

Comparing Schenn and Rielly is not good. Rielly has the smarts, he's an elite skater, and one of the best set up man this team will have in the future.

finally someone who knows his ****. Schenn was one of the worst nhl defencemen i have ever seen, he could not skate, he couldn't pass and if he hit someone it would always put him out of position. He wouldn't even be good in the AHL IMO. time cant make you a better skater. you either got it or you dont.

Well my crystal ball says ... no wait ... I will evaluate next year after this season is over.

It makes sense Rielly didn't get the 5 games try out.

We have too many D that deserved a chance and if we picked Rielly, those guys would be eligible to be picked up from waivers. Kostka, Fraser etc.. plus it seems like Gardiner is coming back soon.

Rielly is going to play 82 games next season with the Leafs :).

Wow I didn't realize Holmgren was that stupid.

That was not the case in his first 2 years. Luke showed a lot of poise with the puck in his own end, and made great outlet passes. He was also the only D-man ont he team who was hard on guys in his own end, crashing them into the boards every chance he got. Then it all went to hell.

I'll give you the skating point though. That was always a problem.

Rielly, Frattin sent down. Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, MacArthur-Grabo-Kulemin, Komarov-Kadri-JVR, Brown-McLement-Orr or Steckel

If we had a first line centre this forward line-up would actually be very good. Oh well, let's hope for break-out years and consistency!

huh? I was going to try and bold the worst statement, but I think they're all pretty bad...

First off, we had a worse defenseman on our team every year Schenn was on it (Lebda and/or Komisarek). Next, his skating was a lot better before he was told to put on more weight which caused him to be a lot slower in his last year. His first pass was actually pretty good and under-rated, by no means is he a PMD or an offensive Dman, but his first pass was usually a short solid pass to an open man.

Now the position part, in his last year was pretty bad... But most people agree that if he hadn't put on weight like he was told to do, he wouldn't have been so slow and out of position so much. Also, Schenn was really good at wiping out players with the puck (When they tried to rush up the wing). Not too many big hits, but good solid ones that take out the puck-carrier.

Skating being something you can't teach? Tell that to Underhill and Brian Boyle... Elite speed is a combination of skill and technique, but technique is VERY important...

Agreed. Schenn was fine skater when he was at 215 max, he learned good poise from kabby.

The only thing is I don't think the team told him to get bigger, I just think he did that himself training with Weber in off season.

I'm surprised he didn't get a look in the NHL, but not disappointed.

A bit more surprised that Frattin is down. Thought he would stick.

Frankly I didn't even think Rielly should have been brought to camp.

There is no doubt in my mind this is the best move for Rielly's development.

The right decision.

Season him for another year and he'll be gold. No need to put him as the 6th d when he can be #1 somewhere else

Leafs actually doing what good organizations do, very encouraging. Morgan may still see action with the Marlies, finally not throwing our prospects to the wolves. :handclap:

Good job sending him down, it's like touching the Stanley Cup without winning it.

Rielly will be an NHLer, why not let him enjoy a real season opener next year or the year after, when he won't just be a stop gap til somebody returns, earn his position and reap the benefits.

I guess I was really wrong. I thought they'd leave him up. At least by skipping the 5 games, he can get in closer to 30 more games. There isn't a lot left on the WHL schedule, that's one of the big reasons I saw no point in sending him down to a losing team. At least he can now get in some good time with a great coach in Eakins come mid March.

Grigorenko, Galchenyuk and Dumba have made their teams. I'm not a fan of Dumba, I wonder why they made that decision.

Probably because Minnesota's management group, scouts, and most people around hockey know he is a good player and not nearly as bad as he is made to sound on our forum.

Would have liked to see Rielly suit up for a few games, but the Leafs have a lot of D in the pipeline whom have earned a shot so I'm not going to be sour about it.

I think he'll do great with a full camp next year and will probably make the team.
