What exactly does Reaves do?

It's actually quite simple, if Reaves isn't gonna cause havoc on every shift by hitting everything in sight he needs to sit in the box. He's not good enough a hockey player to go out there for a leisure skate.
I approve of this message.
The guy needs to be given an ultimatum. You hit or you hit waivers. No fancy stats, wins vs loses or efficacy of team mates need to be thought about here. He isn't part of the skating and scoring team. He is a one man hitting team. Crushing body checks and scraps. When the team needs players, he is riding the pine.

I was fine with the Reaves signing, but unfortunately the longer it goes on like this it's much harder to argue against the claim his contract is hurting the team,

He does alot! He skates around and stuff...

In all seriousness, he will be there when the sh*** hits the fan and he could be a menace in the playoffs s he loves to hit. Recall that his former team tried to resign him, Leafs were forced to give the 3rd year.

Reeves is somehow already a -8 after only 11 games and only playing 8 minutes per game. The next worst +- for forwards is only -3. There's no way whatever benefit you think the Leafs are getting from his intimidation factor is worth the damage he's doing to the Leafs when he's on the ice.

Reeves sucks. He was always terrible and the roll he tries to fill doesn’t really exist anymore for a reason.
But even with that said with the right team around him they could have hid him a bit and made it at least somewhat work.
But on this team with this collection of players Reeves could never work. You can’t have 3 lines who struggle defensively. With the bottom 6 being completely terrible defensively and offensively.
Reeves got benched tonight and finally we had a 4th line that can be trusted in our own zone. The change to the 3rd line with Robertson up and Domi moved into the middle at least made them a threat offensively but it’s even more of a line that needs to be sheltered now and you can’t do that when Reeves makes the 4th line unplayable.

We could have signed Garnet Hathaway, Luke Schenn, and Erik Gustafsson for the same money we spent on Klingberg and Reeves.
Gustafsson would have given us everything Klingberg has and Schenn and Hathaway would have actually been effective toughness that can actually play hockey.

This is the difference between who people thought was a crappy GM and an actual crappy one

Yup.

It's the difference between being reactionary and listening to the noise vs actually analyzing what was wrong with the team.

What the noise was saying: Leafs aren't tough enough and need defensemen.

What we actually needed: Better skaters, transition offense, transition defense, some offensive depth.

If Reaves made a big hit every game a la Minnesota, fought once every few games and provided energy and momentum shifts and did anything vs Boston after Liljegren went down he would have made a very positive impression in Toronto.
So basically if Reaves wasn't Reaves, and was instead something that doesn't exist...

The player's also have to want to sign here. You have no idea if Hathaway or Gustafsson wanted to sign here and Schenn wanted a long-term deal which the Leafs didn't want to commit to. The whole 'we should have signed X player' without factoring in the player's desires is pretty illogical. For all we know Treliving did try to sign all 3.

He plays as the 12th forward in the lineup.. Some teams dont even dress 12 forwards, with a team with double shifting of nylander, marner, mathews and tavares who cares if he plays only 6 min a game... Apparently he gets this lifeless team riled up on the bench so thats good enough for me.. Id rather that than playing a decent 12th forward a regular shift taking away ice time from the stars

Simple litmus test: How quick would we jump at Reaves and 5th for Lafferty?

Yeah I'm fine with him sitting there, getting a couple early shifts and rotating the stars through the 4th line. The only downside is if a forward were to get hurt they are then essentially down to 10 forwards.

I can buy that argument if he just wasn't such a liability when he's on the ice. A minus 8 while playing less than 8 minutes a game is unacceptable even if he is Mr. Congeniality on the bench.

We will need to trade a 4th at the deadline for a Sam Lafferty type 4th line player to replace him.

I don't have words for this signing but then I didn't think anyone would sign Bertuzzi for 5.5 million! Brad got put in tight the way Dubas left. He threw money around but couldn't replace what walked away for free. He hoped a couple would pay off. None have really. Reaves isn't the answer. You need a tough guy in your top 9 and another gritty guy to back him up. Teams are tough by committee not one old, out of shape deterent. Reaves didn't stop Marchand but Boston can injure and maim whomever they want, always have. Reaves at 3 years is horrible.

What was that shit this moron was trying to pull with less than 10 seconds left in the game? What was he trying to prove, that he is doing his job? His job is to hit and influence the game from the start. He still hasn't got that through his cement head that he's done as a useful hockey player. He at the very least can contribute by doing what he was signed to do. Nevermind that Treliving lost his mind by signing this guy for 3 yrs at more than league minimum, he's not performing now.
