What exactly does Reaves do?

Last night the last shift of the game Keefe put Reaves out. He went out, yapped at someone they ignored him, then he found McKewen who yapped back and then laughed at Reaves asking to fight him in the dying seconds of a 6-3 game.

I recall years back the scouting report was to ignore Reaves and he was useless and that is def correct. If players engaged with him and he could take a top 6 player to the box with him that adds value.

Guy needs to go on waivers.

For how little they are paying him, I thought in the offseason "he can't be THAT bad of a player that this contract will hurt them".

After the first month of the season, I would rather just have an young $800,000 guy that has a tad bit more hockey talent AND save that $500,000 or so. $500k isn't much, but when trade deadline comes every little bit will help in terms of who is available and how easily can you free up even the smallest amount of cap space to make things work.

I know there is no cap relief for a retiring player on a +35 contract, but is there relief if they are sent down to the AHL? (same as any other contract?)

Seeing how he got a 3 year deal, he’ll likely get until at least the mid point of this year to turn things around. Game 1/2 Reaves is needed. Game 3 onwards is a liability. My question is wtf happened? Is he injured or has he just checked out?

I'll bet everyone here who celebrated this signing is now pining for Ben Chariot to provide the toughness and grit this team needs to win.

He claims to be an excellent DJ for room music. So good infact the players stay to dance and forget about playing the game.

He is over 35 but he doesn’t have a “35+” contract.

To have one of those the contract needs to have signing bonuses and/or be front loaded.
As his deal pays him the same every season and doesn’t include signing bonuses it doesn’t carry the 35+ penalties

He was a liability in games 1 and 2 as well. But he was running on adrenaline with a new team and season, and threw a few punches, so the group of people who overrate "toughness" gushed over him. Many of us tried to remind those people that he wouldn't be fighting most games, the rest of his play was garbage, and this was the best he would be on his mind-boggling 3-year contract, but it just went in one ear and out the other.

Again I don’t care for his fighting. This is something that barely ever happens/barely is ever needed. It was his hitting, that was creating energy that was great.

The sad truth is that Reaves is just too slow at this age to bring reliable hitting value. The adrenaline and chaos of the early season can give you an extra jump for a couple games, but I think more likely we just remember the hits in those games because even with the early season adrenaline, he had to lay questionable hits to connect, and it created whole kerfuffles.

Yes I agree. I did notice he is too slow. Anytime he had someone lined up another Leaf got to the player first. In his current state, as much as I loved Reaves at one point if he can’t figure it out, he needs to be waived. He’s almost worst than Simmonds the last few games. I do have slight hope he can turn it around. Kind of wondering if he’s injured or something, because last year he was still effective for Minnesota.

Did he crack any skulls tonight?
-2 in just 4.5 mins of ice time (Reaves special), with zero hits, fights, or anything positive really. He’s a low end ECHL player, who Brad gave a 3 year 1.35 mil AAV deal.

I believe he’s now been on the ice for 11 5v5 goals against, 0 5v5 goals for, in 104 5v5 minutes? With Reaves on the ice we get outscored at a rate of 6.4 goals per 60 5v5 mins. Just insanely, insanely bad.

For some more context, the Canucks have allowed 14 5v5 goals all season, the Bruins 15. Reaves is getting scored on nearly as much as some entire teams, while playing a bit over 7 highly sheltered minutes per night. A remarkable achievement, really.

I’m curious what happened to all those people in his signing thread who spent all summer telling us it was a great signing and anyone who disagrees doesn’t know hockey and clearly never played.

Come on guys, what do you have to say now?

They need to recognize mistake and do what the Rangers did with him a few years back, straight to waivers, and then pray to find a trade partner.

But his intangibles tho.

Have teams started fearing us yet? 😳
I'm sure his teammates fear him every time he steps on the ice, not for the reasons intended though...

All kidding aside, I like Reaves when he is on his game. Loved his game in Vegas. Remember his first tfew shifts here, he had the crowd on their feet. Fans love the guy who bring a different element.

Keefe said he can't find any blame for the goals scored when he is on the ice, and he can be a good piece especially here when games get in the muck, and they will. If I am Keefe I break through his stubbornness and tell him straight, "just play a few shifts with your only objective being to keep the puck out. That's it. Rebuild your confidence and get your mojo back so I can also be confident in giving you more minutes"

Otherwise, his ice time and career will only go one way. It can happen really fast.
