in Nonis's interview today he said Rielly, Gardiner, Lupul and Ashton were big parts of the future here.

Was this at the PC or elsewhere? At the PC iirc he mentioned Gardiner, Lupul, and Ashton, but he was talking about trade acquisitions, which would exclude the picks.

If we trade Gardiner for Luongo I'm done. That's one of the dumbest things we could do in reference Luongo.

I believe Nonis is even MORE patient than Burke. Which is partly why I feel this whole thing is just weird.

Gardiner goes no where. Kadri MAYBE. Definitely not both.

Nonis would not make a trade like that, just look at why he got fired before.

Best not to trade Kadri or Gardiner.

Four prospects that we have right now that I wouldn't want to trade are:

Rielly
Gardiner
Kadri
Biggs

I have a feeling all four of these are going to be really good in the future and trading them will make us regret it.

There's no way I send a first the other way in a Lou deal in a shortened season that falls before the draft year of Nathan Mackinnon and Jonathan Drouin. Not to mention Seth Jones. This could be the richest top 10 draft in years. Just no way. I wouldn't take that chance.

Bit a a relief from Friedman:

While the Maple Leafs' interest in Luongo is about as secret as Kim Kardashian's love for attention, it's believed the hockey boss cooled on the idea. Maybe it was posturing. Maybe he didn't like the price (not both Nazem Kadri and Jake Gardiner, that's crazy talk).

I'm thinking some guys are reaching here. They go on tv today and Nonis says he is more patient, Anselmi says the same and likes his style. Then he sells the farm on a goalie for right now and a team that is not ready for anything? I don't think so.

Now with a rumor that Phy has asked about him I hope he goes there. Really, perfect situation for him and they have the assets to get him.

I'm going back to Bernier. Last year LA was rumored to want Frattin and a pick and I think that is where they go. If Gardiner and Kadri are moved its for a top flight centre that is young.

...ok, who? Because I sure as hell do not think they do unless they get into trading guys like couturier.... which is not going to happen. They have the worst prospect pool in the league, and its not really close.

lol i d much rather trade for luongo than bernier.

Luongo equals guarenteed 3-5 years of stability and mentorship in net
Bernier is a massive risk, who could end up being nothing(and literally has equal stats to reimer)

I dont want Bernier anywhere near here, the pressure is much bigger here than LA.

Well before the lockout Mike Gillis asking price was Bozak + Gardiner + Frattin/Kadri + 1st rounder so he appears to have softened his stance since then to some point. But the asking price to day is still very steep, but the Leafs are desperate and Gillis knows that and is playing it up also.

I was never a fan of the Luongo contract nor his age nor the cost to acquire but also understand the way MLSE operates and picks and prospects are simply currency to get better instant players to put more currency in their own pockets with more playoff revenue.

Trading the picks that became Sequin and Hamilton are really not much different then the picks used or prospects acquired for Kadri and Gardiner for corporate if you believe it accelerates the team in the present.

i would be OK with Bozak + Kadri. Not happy but i wouldnt be extremely pissed because you have to give to get. Now if its Gardiner + Kadri then i will go ******* nuts.

I forgot to say that Ownerships reasoning for insisting that the trade be made is that they want to make the playoffs this season.

MLSE doesnt care about long term success. Making the playoffs is a HUGE amount of revenue for the organization.

A quick question for anyone that can answer me. I'm a bit confused.

With the salary cap coming down and teams being allowed to walk away from a 'bad' contract or two without it counting against the cap. (this is my understanding)

Wouldn't Luongo qualify as that bad contract for the Canucks? Since they have Schneider.

If leafs trade for Luongo wouldn't we take on that bad contract without the ability to cut him down the road when he gets old and is still getting paid tons of money?

Wouldn't the ideal situation be that the Canucks walk away and we sign him and pay the difference in Salary between the two contracts? (Again my understanding of the new CBA).

Why should the leafs take on such a contract when the cap is going down and when we have such a lack of supporting talent for a goalie like Luongo?

Is the asking price steep? I would argue that an asking price of say... kadri, bozak and and mid round pick is not steep at all. Sure, we'd be on the look for a lot of talent down the middle but at least we would finally have a goalie. I'll trade a mediocre player and a maybe player for a proven commodity all day and I could care less about the contract. It's not my money just give me the best players available. After all, when did a 5.5 million$ cap hit become so crippling?

Burkes downfall was never his trades despite the media BS. It was his failure to sign free agents to longterm deals. No excuse for the NHLs only 1billion dollar team to not be spending money on the best players it can. Parise or Richards should be leafs but burkes 'morals' got in the way.

Yesterday TSN Radio reported that Toronto told Los Angeles they were no longer intersted in Bernier and I say that's a smart move not to trade for him. He has played less career games then James Reimer and I even heard the draft pick they are asking for him is a 1st round pick. That's a crazy price to pay for his lack of experience and the Leafs don't need to over pay for a Goalie with potiental. They did that when they traded for Andrew Raycroft and the Vesa Toskala and we all remember how they played.

You can only amnesity contracts up to the summer of 2014, so no team can wait till he's old.

And finally, I don't think Vancouver will need to do that, as they can just trade him away, and pay him a lot less money, while getting something in return.
