More interest in % of team goals scored though.....I would think some Dmen might have high percentage. As an example....someone like Lidstrom might play 50% of a game, or close to it and then you'd expect more than 50% of their goals to be scored during the 50% of the game he's on for so potentially a higher than 50% of team goals?

who will then?
will we have to wait 100 years?
It's hard to imagine anyone scoring 50 goals for 20 seasons straight, but that's likely what they'd have to do. Ovechkin isn't just an elite scorer, he's been insanely durable his whole career. Barely missing any games. And his back half (ages 30-present) he's scored nearly as many goals as his prime. It's unheard of. Plenty of elite scorers in the league but nobody can match the consistency and durability of Ovechkin. You'll see his name in the record books for a looooooooong time to come.

What if McDavid play till he is 45?
I'd be surprised if anyone currently playing was to beat it. But the only one I can think of right now who are at least on pace are Matthews.

Ovechkin had 475 goals in 760 games before the age of 30.

Matthews currently has 389 goals in 604 games at the age of 27. He turns 28 in September so has two seasons and the rest of this to reach that total. At his current pace if they had the same number of games Matthews would be on 489 goals in 760 games. However if Matthews played all of the remaining games before he turned 30 that would put him on 793 games and 511 goals.

Of course, a lot can happen and it's a long, long way away still.

For reference, McDavid would need to play another 1049 games at his current pace to break the current, Gretzky record. That's nearly 13 seasons.

Sorry, I don't have % stats for every player.
Just got all WSH goals since 2005/06 from nhl stats = 4741; 2312/4741*100 = 48.8%
And if extracting Ovi's missed games it's somewhere 50-51%.

I've seen this movie before. Keeps playing in the NHL until 46, then returns to his home country to play, buying the team he plays for in the process, and at age 53, he'll still be going over in Russia.

If it wasn't obvious who I was referring to with "I've seen this movie before," it's none other than Jaromir Jagr.
Talking about 53! year old Jagr, he played yesterday, had an assist on Kladnos only goal

Can’t wait until Ovechkin breaks it. Will be 1st all time in goals, top 10 in points (probably 10th) and top 3 all time in hits. We wont ever see a player like him again. When my kids were younger he was one of their favorites even living here in Pittsburgh. They’ll still text me every time he scores another.

To go with what I already mentioned Ovechkin will have one of the best resumes in the history of this league. If you count all hardware, first team all star selections and what you led the league in he has the 5th best resume in league history. Here are what they look like.

The big 4

Wayne Gretzky:
4 Stanley Cups, 9 Hart, 10 Art Ross, 8 first team all star selections, 5 Ted Lindsay, 2 Conn Smythe, 5 retro Rocket Richard, 16x assist leader (59 total)

Gordie Howe:
4 Stanley Cups, 6 Hart, 6 Art Ross, 12 first team all star selections, 5 retro Rocket Richard, 3x assist leader (Smythe and Lindsay didn’t exist yet) (36 total)

Bobby Orr:
2 Stanley Cups, 3 Hart, 2 Art Ross, 8
first team all star selections, 1 Ted Lindsay, 2 Conn Smythe, 8 Norris, 5x assist leader
(31 total)

Mario Lemieux:
2 Stanley Cups, 3 Hart, 6 Art Ross, 5 first team all star selections, 4 Ted Lindsay, 2 Conn Smythe, 3 retro Rocket Richard, 3x assist leader (28 total)

The best of the rest (rounding out the top 10).

Alexander Ovechkin:
1 Stanley Cup, 3 Hart, 1 Art Ross, 8 first team all star selections, 3 Ted Lindsay, 1 Conn Smythe, 9 Rocket Richard (26 total)

Phil Esposito
2 Stanley Cups, 2 Hart, 5 Art Ross, 2 Ted Lindsay, 6 first team all star selections, 6 retro Rocket Richard, 3x assist leader
(26 total)

Jean Beliveau:
10 Stanley Cups, 2 Hart, 1 Art Ross, 6 first team all star selections, 1 Conn Smythe, 2 retro Rocket Richard, 2x assist leader
(24 total)

Connor McDavid
3 Hart, 5 Art Ross, 5 first team all star selections, 4 Ted Lindsay, 1 Conn Smythe, 1 Rocket Richard, 4x assist leader
(23 total)

Bobby Hull:
1 Stanley Cup, 2 Hart, 3 Art Ross, 10 first team all star selections, 7 retro Rocket Richard (23 total)

Maurice Richard
8 Stanley Cups, 1 Hart, 8 first team all star selections, 5 retro rocket Richards
(22 total)

The minute he breaks that record I wouldn’t hesitate to put his career 5th ever. He’s been in the 6-10 range for awhile now for me in any case.

Canadian gatekeeping and insecurity. I can’t fathom it but it is what it is, They have never liked players from overseas. There is a reason Jagr has only one MVP. Ovechkin being the best goal scorer ever isn’t really debatable at this point outside of peak. Gretzky will still hold every other record forever so I don’t know why it bothers people too much. Goals is and has been the only breakable Wayne record. Gretzky outside of his peak in the early-mid 80s never really played like a goal scorer and seems fine with a true goal scorer at heart having the record

The odds are against Matthews for sure. He isn't even halfway to Ovechkin's goal totals yet.

Since he entered the league he has scored 32 more goals than Ovechkin.

Age 19-27 seasons for Matthews and age 31-39 seasons for Ovechkin.

He also doesn't strike me as the type who will stick around until 40 years old or so.

Playing hockey for Jaromir - at this age - is a displacement activity now. He has no idea what else he could do without hockey :)

I agree, especially as he had already had a wrist injury that required surgery I believe. For goalscorers they can be brutal.
