Can’t wait until Ovechkin breaks it. Will be 1st all time in goals, top 10 in points (probably 10th) and top 3 all time in hits. We wont ever see a player like him again. When my kids were younger he was one of their favorites even living here in Pittsburgh. They’ll still text me every time he scores another.
To go with what I already mentioned Ovechkin will have one of the best resumes in the history of this league. If you count all hardware, first team all star selections and what you led the league in he has the 5th best resume in league history. Here are what they look like.
The big 4
Wayne Gretzky:
4 Stanley Cups, 9 Hart, 10 Art Ross, 8 first team all star selections, 5 Ted Lindsay, 2 Conn Smythe, 5 retro Rocket Richard, 16x assist leader (59 total)
Gordie Howe:
4 Stanley Cups, 6 Hart, 6 Art Ross, 12 first team all star selections, 5 retro Rocket Richard, 3x assist leader (Smythe and Lindsay didn’t exist yet) (36 total)
Bobby Orr:
2 Stanley Cups, 3 Hart, 2 Art Ross, 8
first team all star selections, 1 Ted Lindsay, 2 Conn Smythe, 8 Norris, 5x assist leader
(31 total)
Mario Lemieux:
2 Stanley Cups, 3 Hart, 6 Art Ross, 5 first team all star selections, 4 Ted Lindsay, 2 Conn Smythe, 3 retro Rocket Richard, 3x assist leader (28 total)
The best of the rest (rounding out the top 10).
Alexander Ovechkin:
1 Stanley Cup, 3 Hart, 1 Art Ross, 8 first team all star selections, 3 Ted Lindsay, 1 Conn Smythe, 9 Rocket Richard (26 total)
Phil Esposito
2 Stanley Cups, 2 Hart, 5 Art Ross, 2 Ted Lindsay, 6 first team all star selections, 6 retro Rocket Richard, 3x assist leader
(26 total)
Jean Beliveau:
10 Stanley Cups, 2 Hart, 1 Art Ross, 6 first team all star selections, 1 Conn Smythe, 2 retro Rocket Richard, 2x assist leader
(24 total)
Connor McDavid
3 Hart, 5 Art Ross, 5 first team all star selections, 4 Ted Lindsay, 1 Conn Smythe, 1 Rocket Richard, 4x assist leader
(23 total)
Bobby Hull:
1 Stanley Cup, 2 Hart, 3 Art Ross, 10 first team all star selections, 7 retro Rocket Richard (23 total)
Maurice Richard
8 Stanley Cups, 1 Hart, 8 first team all star selections, 5 retro rocket Richards
(22 total)
The minute he breaks that record I wouldn’t hesitate to put his career 5th ever. He’s been in the 6-10 range for awhile now for me in any case.
Canadian gatekeeping and insecurity. I can’t fathom it but it is what it is, They have never liked players from overseas. There is a reason Jagr has only one MVP. Ovechkin being the best goal scorer ever isn’t really debatable at this point outside of peak. Gretzky will still hold every other record forever so I don’t know why it bothers people too much. Goals is and has been the only breakable Wayne record. Gretzky outside of his peak in the early-mid 80s never really played like a goal scorer and seems fine with a true goal scorer at heart having the record
