Some folks need to calmly reflect on this and relax a bit. This was an asset that cost the team NOTHING to acquire. And is a UFA. Tarasenko had ZERO intentions of signing in Ottawa long term. Florida was apparently the only team to which he would agree to be traded. Staios got a couple of picks.
It is what it is. I pin all the blame for this one on Dorion. Completely hamstrung the team.

From all reports, Tarasenko was happy to play out the stretch in Ottawa if he was not traded to Florida, and then would have walked away in the summer. He was okay getting an early jump on the offseason.

He had no interest in going to a contender other than the Panthers and even vetoed a trade to Edmonton before today.

Keep in mind he's already won a cup. He's not trying to check that off.

I doubt your claim of “All Reports”… perhaps you could, link one?

Tarasenko would probably like to increase his stock value on the UFA market, by going to a contender like he did last year, instead of playing out the seasons in St Louis

Why use American spelling?

The closer to the deadline, the more return SS could have gotten…. But we’ll never know.

Keeping Tarasneko would have been just as good as what SS got in return by trading today instead of waiting until Friday.

This is on SS.

Holding out until Friday could have extracted a higher return…. And Tarasenko seemed to want to go to a contender would have agreed to another team if the deadline was looming…… SS did Tarasenko a favour today, when he could have done the Sens a favour by waiting until the deadline
Why spell it Tarasneko?
Why don't you end your sentence with a period?

This isn't fun.

I am with you up until the last sentence, I'm not sure what you wanted from Dorion on this one, he signed a guy most didn't think we realistically would have landed, it probably was give him the NMC or don't sign him, after all is said and done we added a 3rd and a 4th and had the benefit of him helping bring along the kids, huge improvement over the days of giving up a 2nd round pick for 20 games of Stepan or turning a 5th round pick into a 7th and 36 games of Gudbranson.

Occasionally misspelling a Russian name, is not the same as a Canadian using American spelling. One is a mistake, the other is choice.

Is this fun

Well it cost the Team his $5Miillion salary, up to today, and 50% of it for the remainder of the season… plus the restraints on the Cap, being at the ceiling…

You dropped a question mark. Here it is. ?.
You took the bait, will you do it again

Sorry, I meant hamstrung the team as far as trading him as an asset at the deadline. Dorion took a risk. I do think that there was value in the contract. I think Tarasenko's presence did a lot of good for the younger players and he contributed well. I blamed Dorion for giving out the full NTC. Maybe he had planned all along to flip Tarasenko at the deadline if the team was not in the playoffs and had already discussed this with MGMT that it would be difficult and would result in a diminished return? Who knows?
I don't think Staios can be blamed for this trade. The return is due to Dorion giving out the NTC. BUT, if that was the cost of having a Cup winner mentor the younger players for five months, it's not so bad.

As long as Staios doesn't invite Tarasenko back in the summer, I'll give him a pass on the light return. I want nothing to do with any player who so willingly bends a team over. I don't care how good he was for the kids.

He could've just said he didn't wanna waive? He did the sens a solid by waiving.

We gave him a no-move clause with full understanding of this as a potential outcome considering it unfolds for a team every single year. If the Sens were that concerned they wouldn’t have done a full NMC and rather insisted on a NTC of some sort where he can choose between teams and refused to sign him otherwise. Then we have no Tarasenko and no draft picks at all.

He didn't do anything to us. He won’t come back anyway, I doubt either party is interested in that but not because of the trade outcome.

Tarasenko was here to maximize his value in the upcoming UFA year after last year's cap crunch.

That was very clear from the outset.

Now that's how you make a trade! Winnipeg unloaded a loafer like PL Dubois and his lackluster 27 points and his $8.25 million contract until 2031. And you get two players who have put up 50 points and throw in the second round draft pick in 2024.
I know this was done in the summer but Winnipeg's GM is pretty clever.
Did Dubois have a full NTC?

Why? or is that all you have to contribute?
You call Staios an idiot for getting some value out of trade where the player has a full NTC and really only wants to go to one team. Tell me how the heck he can get a better deal when there is no biding war???

You don't retain salary when you're getting such a weak return. Also, he has the option of holding out until crunch time.. maybe florida offers a 2nd rounder instead or betters the offer somehow. Mantha got a better return lol.

I was just saying that I think their GM got a good return on that trade. I think Cheveldayoff is sneaky smart.
I wasn't comparing it to the Tarasenko trade. I am impressed with how Winnipeg finished last season with a lot of turmoil and how they have turned it around quickly. I am hoping we can turn things around for next season.

the salary retention is nothing. The Sens have room. If the Sens don't trade maybe Florida goes elsewhere and the Sens get nothing, And Mantha had no conditions on his contract so comparing that to a full NTC is pretty irrelevant.

Waive for one team. But...he got his money this year (that Florida didn't pay) and got his team of choice in the end.

I get it's part of the CBA and within the parameters of the deal....but man, it feels like a cheap move.

For all we know, he told them this before signing. I don’t think it was any big secret.

He also would have honored the year in Ottawa had the team not cratered. Hard to blame him. The 1 year deal made it obvious he was a mercenary and then the team sucked, while he still held up his end of the bargain, so what can you do.

Tank was a good pro here, maybe underperformed for the first half, but was kind of coming around. Staios wants vets, and just traded one. I'm indifferent about this because it doesn't really matter with this failed season and the likeliness next year will still mirror this year but he's 0-1 to start his GM career here.

I mean I would've preferred if he'd waived for a larger group. But in his situation he also could've been like I don't want to waive. I like it here. Instead he said okay but only where I want to go. It's not ideal but it is what it is.

Debrincat's situation was much worse because it was leaked (purposefully?) a number of times to the media that this was the only location he wanted to go to.

spell check, I need to set the keyboard to Canada English.. I am too lazy. I may also need to set the spelling, etc. to Canadian English.

I use French and English regularly, so I am constantly changing settings. It is a pain in the ass.. make that Hass.

Tnuoc.. I thought that you were one of those rednecks that worship Americana culture!!!!!

In either case, we should all be using Algonquian .. And Ottawa is Odawa (tell him @Relapsing )
