Werenski or Dahlin?

4 Nations has me interpreting this as a 'one game, you must win' situation. I'd take Werenski for that, or for a playoff run the rest of this season.

Taking contracts and age into consideration is closer, but I surprised myself looking up Werenksi's contract that he is a) only 27, and b) he's only signed until he's 30. I must have hallucinated that was an 8 year extension when he signed it?

Werenski at 9.6 mil for three more years, or Dahlin at 11 mil for seven more years? Rising cap says maybe Dahlin's long term security makes me choose him, but it's close.

Imo Dahlin has more skills, but he processes the game slower. The nhl is super fast. Got to think the game quick, especially as a D.
 
dahlin has a lot of untapped potential. maybe some day he passes werenski but i'd take werenski without a second thought right now.

There's only a few years age difference and Werenski just made his biggest step. D sometimes have their primes come later, like Josi.

Dahlin might pull ahead of Werenski in the next few years but it's not going to be because of Werenski aging out of his prime, it's more like to be Dahlin moving up into that Norris category.

I guess the other question is whether this is a sustainable new level for Werenski. Dahlin looked to take another step a couple years ago and looked like he would end up with 90 points, and then struggled to close it out. As someone who has watched him regularly, does it feel like this is sustainable?

Dahlin didn't take a step back from greatness in my view, he was always in that 5th-12th best D group and his points are riding up and down with team offense.

If Werenski can keep skating like this - incredibly fast, wheeling the ice every shift, and by a good margin covering more ice than any other player in the league over the course of a game - then Werenski is going to keep doing this. So as long as he's healthy he's going to be in his prime.

There isn't going to be a system change that reduces his rover style - you can see on Team USA that Werenski can't move as much - but every coach (including Torts) has recognized that his NHL team is best when Werenski is everywhere on the ice.

There might be fewer points if forwards cool off in a given year. And I'm not sure about the PP. Werenski was never particularly good as a PP QB - in a stationary position he clearly lacked the vision, dexterity, and fakes of the great PP QBs - so maybe he'll turn back into a pumpkin there. Currently he's moving the puck much better with a faster release, and added a slapshot threat that helps the PP - until this year he played with a whippy stick and it slowed his release and meant he wasn't one-timing pucks. He's now playing with Josi's stick.

The points drop is a direct result of the Sabres having an awful power play. Way too predictable and unit 2 frequently looks better.
 
Dahlin reminds me of Ed Jovonoski (another D man taken 1OA). Lots of physical tools but the hockey iq doesn’t match.

I wouldn’t want Dahlin to date my sister, never mind be on my team for $1M more than Zach Werenski.
