Why does everyone think the Pens need a big defenseman and to trade Maatta? Maatta is 21, they have no need to trade him

I think this fills a need for both teams.

Trouba
Connor

For

Maatta
Pouliot
2017 2nd

Solves the Jets LHD problems and both are on great contracts, they have plenty of W depth. Pitt gets a good RHD and Connor can jump in the top 6 which needs help on the wings.

PIT doesn't need a RHD - I mean ideally it happens, but word is Trouba wants 5m+. I'll stick with Maatta and deal with a shortage of RHD and keep Maatta's very friendly contract.

Not to mention that I highly doubt that WPG would move Connor, and if they do, it's probably not for Pouliot. And even if they're going to do something stupid like that, they wouldn't do it before the expansion draft.

Maatta is the only piece with significant value. Pouliot may turn out to be a great player, but right now his value is extremely low because he has proven nothing at the NHL level. Pouliot and a very late 2nd are pieces that don't really belong in a discussion for a top-4 RHD.

He's proven that he can play at the NHL level and not look out of place. And realistically, his value is probably a lot higher then most fans think.

OP easy pass from Jets. No interest in picks either. If Trouba was traded we would need to trade for an equal or better dman replace him. Why do we do this?

FYI Connor is untouchable

"Clearly something is going on in Winnipeg and Trouba wants out! You can trust me. I know what I am talking about. I don't quite understand how arbitration works but my other points are solid gold!"

i never said to trust me. I dont quite understand how arbitration works. I can google it but it doesnt affect my daily life so i dont make it a point to memorize it.

good luck ever finding one of those

Value wise, Maatta, a 2nd, and a 3rd should get it done but WPG fans don't want to move Trouba unless McDavid, Matthews, or Eichel is coming back. He's really overrated on these boards imho

We actually want a LHD comparable to Trouba coming back. No need for more forwards. Maatta actually would interest smart Jets fans, but I have serious concerns if he will ever put together a full season, so there would need to be a plus. As far as this trade, it falls through when you include Connor. Pittsburgh simply does not have the prospects to get him

Rather keep Maatta and see if he progresses this year by getting a full offseason without having to deal with shoulder surgery, mumps, or cancer(Oh my).

Also, if we're giving up Trouba and Connor, why don't we add a bit more and just get Malkin?

How about we just throw Crosby in to while we're at it?

As long as you're willing to take back some salary, sure.

Trying for Trouba is trying enough but as soon as you add Conner then The Jets are done talking to you. That offer for Trouba and Conner is laughably bad.

The shock on my face when I read the OP turned to absolute horror when I saw 2 posts on the first page that said the Pens WOULDN'T make that trade.

Maatta's and Jones's contracts should be good comparison for Trouba. Would be shocked if he got more than 5-5.5

Like Trouba a lot but Maatta being cost controlled I think matters even though I don't think he's as good. Plus I'm always interested in a RHD for any team but we lose a good LHD in the process so while it's not a wash it's much closer to a wash than it would be if a Dman wasn't going back the other way. One of those times it's probably better to just leave well enough alone.

I don't see why Pittsburgh would need to change much after the emergence of Daley and Dumoulin... if they can keep on going like they did during the spring, there shouldn't be any problems.

This Trouba guy must be the next Nick Lidstrom by the sound of things. Why are earth would Pitt give up 2 young promising D for Trouba?

if he's a #1, you get him locked up

Both the Jets and Trouba's agent have publicly stated they are looking for a long term deal.

Both Chevy and the agent have shown a tendency to wait until the "deadline" to make deals. (in this case it will likely be close to the start of the World Cup).

Trouba's an RFA with no arbitration rights and the market has been clearly set by several other good dmen from his draft class.

Part of this negotiation may also be around usage... ensuring he's not stuck carrying Stu on a 3rd pair and instead playing LHD with Buff.

If Jets fans perceived value of Trouba is inflated it's because there has been what seems like hundreds of trade proposals from most of the teams in the league for him. Draft picks and non elite forwards won't help the Jets so no one wants that. Sorry a middle 6 winger, a draft pick and a low end prospect won't get it done (that's an example of some of the proposals which have mainly centered around older wingers on the back end of their careers).

The only real question is will the deal be 6, 7 or 8 years? The Jets need Trouba as he fits in age wise with the new core of the team.

Going from Pouliot and a 2nd to Connor would help our forward group a lot in the coming years. Going from Maatta at 4m for the next 6 years to Trouba at 5-7m or whatever he's asking for would really affect our cap. We're already going to have to make decisions with Dumoulin, Daley and Bonino... no need to make things worse with adding another expensive contract to the team... we already have a bunch of those.

So, no I wouldn't make that deal. If Trouba was already signed to something reasonable (even a 2-3 yr deal), then maybe I'd consider it. Maybe. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to pass.

Need I say more?

If Trouba is such a top-tier defensemen and the Jets feel that same way, he would be locked up by now. Superstars in the NHL rarely go past July 1st as a RFA. They are locked up long-term for fair, though large, AAV. By not locking him up, you’re following the path of a Dougie Hamilton or PK Subban. Go ahead and exercise his RFA status and sign him on the cheap short-term, and then be ready to pay him even more money or trade him.
