The intention was dirty with an intent to hurt but the hit was clean. Not sure how you can take that type of hit out of the game when a player puts himself in a bad position. A player skating with his head forward looking at the puck shouldn’t be deemed untouchable and get a free pass. The only way to take that hit out of the game is to take the open ice hit out of the game which I would hate

That play is done many times in a game, and most times players are not looking to end a guys career.

Shades of Scott Stevens on Lindros, but more north-south.

The league allows it, I can’t blame a guy for playing punishing physical hockey when that’s allowed by the rules. I think concussions are a problem, and will be as long as hitting is allowed. You could get really radical and say no head contact is allowed, but it’s damned tough to hit like that.

Hope Meier is ok. Dude is a brick shithouse himself, that’s a lot of force right there.

I really want this hit to be legal. I think the technique is spot on and Trouba doesn’t do anything wrong in terms of his options in hitting a guy skating through the middle of the ice.

But in todays game, with the “principal point of contact” terminology featured prominently in the rulebook as determining what is and is not an illegal hit…is it not technically an illegal hit? How would his head not be the principal point of contact? Is there something about which player is “at fault” that I don’t know about?

That’s why I said the intention was dirty. But if a player is skating with his head down, should he be deemed untouchable? Why not do that all the time then through the neutral zone?

NHL rules basically look at it as if the player didn’t have a head. If his head magically disappeared, would it still have been a full body check? If yes (like in this case), the hit isn’t a head check. If no, like in a case of a glancing blow to the head or where the head is picked and if the head didn’t exist the hit would basically miss entirely, then it’s illegal.

IIHF rules treat it differently and put the onus on the checker to avoid the head. I expect the NHL will eventually go there as well, but it hasn’t yet.

Height is an excuse to head hunt when you are losing? Great also Meier's head is hardly even down by comparison.

you think you can enter the zone head down just because you're winning? There have been dozens and dozens instances of players doing this and getting annihilated in this fashion. In Meiers case he wasn't even hit from the side as he skated straight into Trouba directly

That hit looks and feels like it should still be legal in the NHL. This is a contact sport is it not. That one is on the puck carrier assuming the PK will give him more space.

He skated head on into danger and got demolished on account of his poor decision making with the puck in that instance. He’s responsible for his own health. He skated himself into that hit.

No suspension. No fine. Even the players on the ice seemed to know Meirer got himself lit up. Didn’t respond to Trouba.

Trouba is a master of devastating hits and I like him a lot.

But the principal point of contact on this hit is Meier's head. The second angle the OP provided is clear: Trouba hit him right in the f***ing face! His head almost disappeared between his shoulders! Look at his neck too. If that's a legal hit, the league is not adequately protecting the players.

Meier might be out for a bit.

IIHF makes this exception:

It might still be a penalty bc of “upward motion” but even IIHF has a gray area

Says the guy with a Scott Stevens elbow in his avatar. Happy with the series outcome, but there’s no denying Trouba floored Miere and there was no response.
The Devils responded. They added to their lead and laughed at Trouba as he left the ice. Why let a mediocre player like Trouba throw you off your game?

A beat dog is going to howl. Shame he didn't show up in the first 400 minutes of this series. Instead he's going to be bragging about his hits on the 4th green tomorrow.
