Training Camp and Preseason thread 2023

Panarin is one of a handful of NHL players who can play on the perimeter and still be an effective player. That said he's acquired a few bad habits IMO. The crossing the opponent's blue line circle and pass play gets read a lot by opponents the last couple years and it's turned into breakaways the other way. He also overstays shifts more than any other forward on our team and sometimes he'll stop shooting for stretches of games and other teams start reading that too. He's got a very good shot and he needs to keep opposition defense honest.

His last two postseason's have not been very good. In a way I'd give him somewhat of a pass for 21-22 vs. Tampa because both his line mates Copp and particularly Strome were banged up. Strome shouldn't even have played the last 2/3/4 games--abdominal tears both sides I mean WTF was he and even Gallant thinking? and in the last one he was a huge detriment just being out there. Last year Panarin just sucked after the first game.
Well said. When people talk about young kids TOI and opportunity, the thing that gets most overlooked is Panarin's long shifts. These shifts mean that the lines often get out of whack. It means whatever LW(s) follows panarin in the rotation ends up having to take a more abbreviated shift as their linemates or conversely stays out for roughly the same amount of time, but their shift is split between two diff sets of linemates. I have no doubt that Laf and Kakko haven't devleoped quite as fast as I would have hoped. But when we talk about their minutes, not enough attention is drawn to situational nature of the shifts. It's already true that Panarin and Kreider and Zib will be relied on heavily, which already impacts the kinds of situations Kakko and Laf find themselves in, there's also matchups. What are they beings asked to do in their role that might be outside their comfort zone. Switching wings, zone starts, being the defensive conscience of their line, etc. Add to that almost no PP time. It all has an impact. But certainly Panarin's longer shifts make it quite a bit harder for offensive LW prospects to be developed on the roster in an offensive role.

Laviolette joined Nashville and had a 24 year old Ryan Ellis who wasn't much to write home about and he scored 180 points in 300 games with Laviolette as his coach.

Jones is 22.
Ryan Ellis was also an 11th overall pick with way more NHL upside than Zac Jones. Bigger frame with a capability of actually playing defense. Expecting the same result is a reach.

I like Zac Jones and it would be best for everyone if he can break through and stick, but I am not optimistic

I actually really like seeing the videos of the little 1-on-1 battles between players during training camp. If some beat writer decided to only record and post as many of them as they could during camp, but never put up any lists of player groups or line combos or whatever; they would probably be my favourite source this time of the year.

Jones getting worked and then embarrassed by Ryan Lindgren. Ryan Lindgren, who is primarily a stay-at-home defensive defenseman. Maybe that’s why Jones hasn’t been able to stick at the NHL level…

That's a grueling 30 second one on one. It particularly shows Ryan's determination and battle level. An issue with Jones is fighting guys off that are determined to get to the net. You can see Zac is more than willing to battle but size and strength are an issue and Lindgren is a 6' 190 lb. guy. I don't think it's a compete thing but Zac Jones vs. Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Evgeni Malkin, the Tkachuk's......guys with lots of size and strength who will drive the net every chance they get and particularly if they see a guy they can overpower quickly.....that can be a problem for Zac in a way that it's not a problem for Trouba, Fox, Miller, Lindgren, Schneider. If Zac makes the Rangers there will be situations where we're going to have to shelter him.

Where exactly would you shelter Jones? How? Against dump and chase 4th lines? How's that help?

Lindgren is VERY light, about 175. He's had years to work on core strength, I don't see it happening for him. At least not here.

Just mentioning top forwards who I think would eat Jones alive.

If you're asking me though I think the 6D spot is Gustafsson's to lose and that either Harpur or Mackey the most likely to be the 7D which would put Jones on waivers to Hartford if we don't trade him in the meantime. That said it's not like I don't think Jones has no chance to beat out Gustafsson I just don't think it's likely. Someone said today that teams don't like smallish bottom pairing defensemen and I think there's some truth to that not that Gustafsson is all that big but he's around 6' 190 some lbs.

Do you mean Jones in your second paragraph? Lindgren is probably closer to 200 and has always had really good lower body strength and balance.

As for Jones, I don’t think he needs to be sheltered as much as he’d need to play. Two years ago, he showed he was really effective at avoiding contact and moving pucks up ice quickly. For the direct comparison to Gustafsson, his ceiling is probably where Gus is now, which isn’t meant to be an insult. Gus was a great signing by Drury that I think is being overlooked. He was really, really good for Washington last year when Carlson went down.

I've been thinking the exact same thing the more I hear Peter, I'm excited for the team - especially the kids, to receive direction and correction. (goes for the team as well)

Laviolette mentioned the other day that he's found there's players wanting more info/data on how to play, that it's new to them. I couldn't help but think it was collection of youngsters - either way, drop the puck on the season! :)
It's good to hear all the positive "talk" but's see the f***ing "walk" . 2 years ago we made ECFinals. Our youngsters aren't so much youngsters and we've added some solid veterans. The Stanley Cup is ours. I'll be sadly disappointed with anything else !!!

That situation would never happen in a real game. These are 1v1 drills in practice with no time limit. In a real game situation the ice has 10 skaters and a ton of moving parts and a 1v1 situation would last a couple seconds not 30. It's absurd anyone would see a 30 second clip and determine a player is unfit. Bananas.

Watching this after last year's clown show is refreshing. I've been pissed off all summer but I can't complain about Drury attempting to fix the issues some of us were criticizing over Gallant's entire tenure - such as intensity, overall game speed, puck movement, X and O's. The players all seem in good shape, awake and eager to go and the mood overall seems good. What a contrast to last season's comatose brainless boring BS.

Here's to a good season.
It's nice seeing the players buckled between their run. They are actually working and pushing themselves. I've said for 2-3 years that compared to other teams we were out of shape from a conditioning/endurance stand point. Nice to see

You probably could. Of course you'd need to have a specialist job in a company where the default language is Russian for the comparison to make sense....

I'm also not 100% convinced that hockey players and sports reporters/journalists are 'co-workers'.
U attending those Kings-Dogs preseason games down there?
