Training Camp and Preseason thread 2023

Who said I was joking?

Panarin is in prove it to me mode after last postseason.

His staying on the outside style isn't working in the postseason.

And it could easily be a sweep in round 1 and losing in 7 in a tough series that Panarin does squat.

I know Panarin's play this past summer was frustrating but I think that, as a fanbase, we are overreacting how bad he is in the post-season. He played really well under Quenneville and Tortorella in Chicago and Columbus, being a P/GP player and carrying those teams.

It's the post-season last summer with the lower back injury and this summer where the entire team looked lost, where he left a lot to be desired. But I am convinced a structured gameplan (Which Laviolette brings) brings back the Panarin we saw in Chicago and Columbus in the post-season.

Not one interview with the media from Panarin since training camp began. I wish I can use the not comfortable with English at my job when my co-workers ask me questions. It's a shame the Rangers let him get away with this nonsense
WGAF. I just want him to play well this year. He doesn't have to announce it.

Panarin is one of a handful of NHL players who can play on the perimeter and still be an effective player. That said he's acquired a few bad habits IMO. The crossing the opponent's blue line circle and pass play gets read a lot by opponents the last couple years and it's turned into breakaways the other way. He also overstays shifts more than any other forward on our team and sometimes he'll stop shooting for stretches of games and other teams start reading that too. He's got a very good shot and he needs to keep opposition defense honest.

His last two postseason's have not been very good. In a way I'd give him somewhat of a pass for 21-22 vs. Tampa because both his line mates Copp and particularly Strome were banged up. Strome shouldn't even have played the last 2/3/4 games--abdominal tears both sides I mean WTF was he and even Gallant thinking? and in the last one he was a huge detriment just being out there. Last year Panarin just sucked after the first game.

I wouldn't rule out Edström either for a 4th line role.

None of Nash, Belzile or Pitlick are good/consistent enough to be given a spot right away. Bonino might, but only because of positional need.

If Othmann makes the team it'll be as a 3rd line LW/RW. With Cuylle it's a 4th line LW/RW spot and for Edström it would be 4th line LW/C.

Vesey and Goodrow are the guys that can move between the 3rd and 4th line to "fill a gap" if needed.

Edström so far was a little too quiet in the Rookie Games last week. Granted it's a small sample size and he has all camp to prove it. I expected he'd be more of a possession/forecheck monster in those games. He was moved to the third or checking line with Rempe after like one period. I don't know if it was part of Knoblauch's strategy to have a ridiculously large line, but he was adequate and not a standout.

So far Laviolette has played him at center in camp in the first scrimmage. What that means is anyone's guess. However he seems not to be in a great position to make the big club unless he turns it up by 2-3 gears tomorrow or Tuesday.

Kreider - Zibanejad - Lafreniere
Panarin - Chytil - Kakko
Othmann - Trocheck - Wheeler
Cyulle - Goodrow - Vesey

Miller - Fox
Jones - Trouba
Lindgren - Schneider

I don't care who "Panarin works with". The time for placating him to get him moving his ass and playing the right way are over. The "Kid Line" is primed and ready for break out seasons. The time of holding them back is over. This team either succeeds because of them or they miss the playoffs. It's time. The 3 top vet forwards with the 3 top young forwards in the top 6. They "paid their dues".

Othmann the pain in the neck with Trocheck the pain in the neck and a vet.

Cyulle the pain in the neck with two hard working and responsible vets.

Miller is ready for more. We didn't commit to him by trading up, and extending him to hold him back anymore. He has a chance to be one of the more unique defenseman in the league with his combination of size, reach, strength, and athleticism. It's time for him to move up.

Let Jones get the reps 5v5 and on PP2. Trouba can focus on defending and staying within his own game instead of doing too much. Jones has a skillset that this team desperately needed last season. In the AHL he was one of the better defensemen at zone exits and transition.

Lindgren and Schneider would be a huge pain in the ass of a pair to play against, it's Schneider's 3rd year. You committed to him the same way you did Miller. It's time he's given a more defined role. That pair can be used as a match up pair.

The time of holding young players down in favor of scrubs like Hunt, Blais, Pitlick, Bonino, etc is over. The time of forcing the Veseys and Goodrows into the top 9 are over. You want to emulate the teams that are perpetually successful and win Cups, then do it the way they do it. They don't purposefully hold back their high end young talent while cramming garbage into roles above their heads. Let the young players that are the future of this core flourish and let the vets support them. Otherwise, we are going to be watching the likes of the Devils run this division and eventually win Cups while we continue to "make the young guys earn it" dinosaur philosophy that has NEVER worked for the Rangers yet continue to do it. One Cup in 82 years and they still haven't figured out placating aging slow vets isn't the way.
Agreed with all of this except Jones.

Gustafsson > Jones.

Because no one is there. Camp for Hartford hasn't started yet (because most of the players who will attend camp in Hartford are in NY right now). And besides that, Othmann still needs to be given a shot at making the team, regardless of his chances.

At the end of the day, we need to do what's best for Othmann and his development.
This also gives him a taste of the pro world at THE TOP level.

Seeing how these guys prep & train, getting a sense of their mentality etc.

I imagine it's HUGE for a young players development to be a part of THE TEAM... even if it's only for a month.

He gets to meet & skate w guys he'll be playing with for a while (hopefully) in the future.

They have found gold:

Kreider-Trochek-Kaako

That line is going to be a monster

Now just move around the other pieces Lavi...

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Wheeler
Panarin-Chytil-Vesey/Goodrow/Othmann
Really? I look at that line and see zero playmakers. They will struggle to score.

Vesey and his little boy looks at 30 yrs old.

The past is true, but that also when he wasn't the 3rd highest paid player in the league.

Panarin is a big reason why we have been labeled as a country club. He hand picks who he plays with (Fast, Strome, NOT Kakko, etc), he wont get off the ice for the full 2 min PP even when hes visably gassed, and he will.not engaged in the middle of the ice.

And, mentioning 2 summers...that's not the fluke. That's the beginning of a trend.

I would love to be wrong and that Lavi rights the ship with him, but in all of sports, how many athletes with big deals relinquish power that they get after being given it by a franchise ?

You probably could. Of course you'd need to have a specialist job in a company where the default language is Russian for the comparison to make sense....

I'm also not 100% convinced that hockey players and sports reporters/journalists are 'co-workers'.

Jones getting worked and then embarrassed by Ryan Lindgren. Ryan Lindgren, who is primarily a stay-at-home defensive defenseman. Maybe that’s why Jones hasn’t been able to stick at the NHL level…

Yes but added context is Ryan Lindgren was best on the team by in GvA/60 (Giveaways per 60) - 0.85

He has his warts but he also scored 92 points last year and led the team in scoring for the 4th straight year. Sometimes that gets you some latitude from the coaching staff.

Depending on how much time PP2 gets and how productive it is, that isn't likely to be much value. If Jones isn't capable outside of the PP, he can't be in the lineup on a regular basis.
Yeah I mean I wasnt inferring he wasnt capable outside of the PP. He'd be #6 on the depth chart. Was just mentioning his biggest impact would probably be ppqb#2.

Wow way to be by Lindy.

Jones let himself get dummied here not playing the body. This is why he's not a legit NHL defenseman. This guy is Thomas Pock 2.0.
