Training Camp and Preseason thread 2023

This is not how teams are run…. We have plenty of youth in the lineup as is. Cuylle and Othmann will have to play out of this world to be considered to for the roster.
So why keep them in training camp then. Send them to Hartford now then.

To me Othmann has a shot at making the team. It's not a great shot but if he has a camp that suggests he can say push Goodrow down to the 4th line and take the 3RW slot then he might break camp on the Rangers after which he'll have to nail his spot down as he'll be likely sent down if he struggles too much early on. What we'll have to see is more than him putting in a goal or two or three. HIs play away from the puck will say a lot for his chances. But the Rangers right now have 8 solid guys for their top 3 lines and Goodrow. Even beating out Goodrow at this point in time is a huge challenge for Brennan. But it's what preseason is about. There's certainty about most of the spots going in but not all of them so let the best guys win.

Not one interview with the media from Panarin since training camp began. I wish I can use the not comfortable with English at my job when my co-workers ask me questions. It's a shame the Rangers let him get away with this nonsense

Kreider - Zibanejad - Lafreniere
Panarin - Chytil - Kakko
Othmann - Trocheck - Wheeler
Cyulle - Goodrow - Vesey

Miller - Fox
Jones - Trouba
Lindgren - Schneider

I don't care who "Panarin works with". The time for placating him to get him moving his ass and playing the right way are over. The "Kid Line" is primed and ready for break out seasons. The time of holding them back is over. This team either succeeds because of them or they miss the playoffs. It's time. The 3 top vet forwards with the 3 top young forwards in the top 6. They "paid their dues".

Othmann the pain in the neck with Trocheck the pain in the neck and a vet.

Cyulle the pain in the neck with two hard working and responsible vets.

Miller is ready for more. We didn't commit to him by trading up, and extending him to hold him back anymore. He has a chance to be one of the more unique defenseman in the league with his combination of size, reach, strength, and athleticism. It's time for him to move up.

Let Jones get the reps 5v5 and on PP2. Trouba can focus on defending and staying within his own game instead of doing too much. Jones has a skillset that this team desperately needed last season. In the AHL he was one of the better defensemen at zone exits and transition.

Lindgren and Schneider would be a huge pain in the ass of a pair to play against, it's Schneider's 3rd year. You committed to him the same way you did Miller. It's time he's given a more defined role. That pair can be used as a match up pair.

The time of holding young players down in favor of scrubs like Hunt, Blais, Pitlick, Bonino, etc is over. The time of forcing the Veseys and Goodrows into the top 9 are over. You want to emulate the teams that are perpetually successful and win Cups, then do it the way they do it. They don't purposefully hold back their high end young talent while cramming garbage into roles above their heads. Let the young players that are the future of this core flourish and let the vets support them. Otherwise, we are going to be watching the likes of the Devils run this division and eventually win Cups while we continue to "make the young guys earn it" dinosaur philosophy that has NEVER worked for the Rangers yet continue to do it. One Cup in 82 years and they still haven't figured out placating aging slow vets isn't the way.

Because no one is there. Camp for Hartford hasn't started yet (because most of the players who will attend camp in Hartford are in NY right now). And besides that, Othmann still needs to be given a shot at making the team, regardless of his chances.

At the end of the day, we need to do what's best for Othmann and his development.

Dude the AHL is the second best league in the world. Othmann is 20 years old and is coming from the OHL...
IIRC you said the same about Kravtsov - that he didn't need AHL time and came to north america too early.

The players you listed (and when you said the same RE: Tarasenko Panarin Kuznetsov etc ) are the exception. Kreider was still playing in college at this age + then spent most of the following season in the AHL. Assuming Othmann doesn't outplay some other players, should start in AHL playing first line minutes and come up later

Kravtsov should have stayed in Russia for at least 3 years after he was drafted. Go with a development plan that worked for others. Not force a path that's proven to be a disaster.

But that's not the debate here.

Re Othmann: I am not saying Othmann doesn't need AHL time, I never said he's good enough to play in the NHL.

My point is that people are deadset on either scenario (NHL or AHL) when that's just not how it works. This should be an open discussion rather than just people screaming what they want to see.

Saying Othmann definitely needs AHL time is just as dumb as saying he's definitely making the team.

I want Kakko on Zs right. We had an absolute great 1st line last year of Krieder-Z-Kakko that just was mushed with putting it in the net

But I agree, I'm done with the placating with Panarin. If Lavy think Kakko is the best option with Bread, I want to see it for a 15 game stretch, which has not happened

I'm sick and tired of Panarin deciding what is best and not the coaches.

He's a very good player, but he's not at a Lebron James level to pull that

I’m all for giving Othmaan and Cuylee good long looks in camp

Just seems to make more sense to let Othmaan play a ton in the AHL to start

Cuylee could legit make the bottom 6 sending Pitlick or Vesey to spare

It’s not like Nash, Bezile, Brodz are anything more than cheap bubble spares . Need those guys but they all clear waivers

I wouldn't rule out Edström either for a 4th line role.

None of Nash, Belzile or Pitlick are good/consistent enough to be given a spot right away. Bonino might, but only because of positional need.

If Othmann makes the team it'll be as a 3rd line LW/RW. With Cuylle it's a 4th line LW/RW spot and for Edström it would be 4th line LW/C.

Vesey and Goodrow are the guys that can move between the 3rd and 4th line to "fill a gap" if needed.

I'd rather Edstrom on the 4th line than Cuylle. I think Cuylle has more runway left in terms of development, and he'd be better off playing big minutes and all situations in Hartford.

Im fine with othmann and and cuylle starting in the ahl. Both will probably be up some point this year. Probably better for them to get big minutes there instead of bottom 6 and no Pp time here.

Also we need to keep our depth. We have been uncannily healthy the last few years. The injury bug will come back to bite us at one point. Especially since Rammer is gone.

Panarin doing the Britney Spears thing is really creepin me the eff out. I feel like he's either going to be a total disaster this season or be like a top player in the world and I cant wait to watch and find out which it is.

Getting swept after winning a round in 7 games sounds way too realistic for this to be a joke.

Who said I was joking?

Panarin is in prove it to me mode after last postseason.

His staying on the outside style isn't working in the postseason.

And it could easily be a sweep in round 1 and losing in 7 in a tough series that Panarin does squat.

I can't read the article, but I love that they are working on defense. Good defense will lead to a good transition game, which will help us with our overall lack of team speed.
