Not necessarily, Campbell can play 2B, Breggy at 3B, move Raffy to DH, playing 1B and 3B part time.
Yoshida becomes your 4th OF, part time DH, or move him out altogether.

We just got a draft pick from the Padres for Pivetta. Sox would earn a Comp. Round B selection (No. 77 overall) in the 2025 Draft.

San Diego forfeited its 2nd-highest Draft pick and $500,000 from its int'l bonus pool.


So we really didn't lose much.

I would be inclined to say that's a lose lose deal for the Sox.

Either he sucks, and you have to set 40 million on fire every season, or he's really good and goes right back to market next season.

I prefer the latter and if he is great and they think they can't re-sign him, trade him for assets.

If he's still a good player then it's the type of signing they should be in on. If Campbell is ready and forces his way into at bats it will work itself out.

So, I think there are some scenarios where things will "work itself out".

In my mind, there are more scenarios where the Sox are eventually forced to make some really uncomfortable decisions.

Absolutely love this acquisition. Puts them right there with the Yankees and easily a playoff team in the weak AL IMO. As long as they don't trade Casas it's a winner but even if they do not the be all end all.

I can see them taking all the good will away of this deal by trading Casas away for a bag of balls like @EverettMike stated earlier.

I'm really happy about this signing --- I just hope they come to their senses soon and rip the band aid off by announcing that he's playing 3B.

Otherwise, we're going to see it become awkward, like the year where everyone knew Nomar would be taking over SS from Valentin, but they didn't make it "official" until a few weeks into spring training, if I remember right.

Package Yoshida for bullpen help if you must, but I can't see how this team isn't better with Bregman at 3B instead of 2B.

Define give away. I don't think they are gonna dump him when is value is lower than it was a year ago just to get rid of his bizarre presence/persona. I think it makes more sense for them to communicate with him and stress the importance of this season after what was a lost year for him last year. Now if they get blown away with an offer? Yep I am listening. I don't see it happening right now though.

I don't view uncomfortable decisions as a bad thing though. Making an uncomfortable decision to me means you have options.

I also think these potential decisions will be worked out when Trevor Story or Tristan Casas gets hurt again

Feels like a win-win for Bregman on that. If it's closer to 3 yrs / 90M in present day value, shaving off 10M a year, and he gets that paid out after he retires, that's some nice guaranteed income for him, while still taking home 30Mish for however many years he chooses to stay w/ Boston.
