Funny how we all talk of the core 4 but trading say marner or nylander+ for Jones still gives u a core 4. It's just spread up different. And u have 2 top c's and a 1d And still a top winger with who ever is left.

I don’t blame them. Why should any of them take a discount.
Especially Rielly. I wouldn’t take anything less than 7 if I was him. Not watching what’s going on.
Your right I was hoping someone would step up and take discount to try and steer things back on track and show that the players will sacrifice money in order to build a winner but that's clearly not going to happen

If Robertson, Amirov, Sandin, Lilijgren end up becoming good players guess they'll be keeping that tradition alive as long as 16, 34, 88, 91 are on this team

It’s tough when everyone is expecting discounts, ELC’s and 700K Spezza’s to save us.
Indicates a bigger problem to me.

Welp. Goodbye Zack. Go get that bag.

(I wouldn’t put much stock into the Seravelli report. He even says it’s a rumour that he doesn’t know if there’s any truth for it.)

However, I believe the CJ report. 6M for Hyman as a UFA is realistic for him. Not from us, but some team will do it. They have the Josh Anderson comparable right there, and Hyman is 4x the player Anderson is

Honestly I would be livid if they just let him go. There would have to be an offer than was too rich to even consider matching. I'd love to give 6 million to Zach, and I can certainly see him living up to that deal but that's top market value for him IMO. He is so f***ing important to this team though. I'd be open to giving him a 7 year deal to lower the AAV. Which I really am not sure he will get in UFA. But hey, he's a phenomenal player and no longer the best kept secret in the NHL. Everyone knows just how good he is, and honestly I think he has another gear. I will respect whatever decision Zach makes for himself. He's earned it. I'll be cheering for him whatever happens

The only players on 'discounts' are those who breakout after signing their contracts or those who live in tax free states.

With hyman offer him 4mx8, nmc, heavily front loaded. If he doesn't accept tell him to take a hike.

This is such a tough one. Hyman is worth every dollar but we also saw how ineffective he is without that same power and speed in his lower half.

With his skill set and style you really have to wonder what his future looks like. It’s too soon to tell but they have to make a decision now.

Tough.

ya I really think you have to set the stage for him and have some artist render a painting of his number getting honored, silver stick, hell even have the 11 with the "C". Just paint the picture for him on what they envision him to be as a career Leaf. They don't necessarily need to believe it, but if he resigns for 4.5 x 8years, he would almost guarantee live up to that deal. Given how effective he is, and how endearing his play style is, he could go down as one of the most beloved Leafs of all time. Similar to Darcy Tucker. And I'm sure if you ask Tucks what his favorite memories of his career, I can guarantee it was as a Leaf. It meant something to him. I think Zach feels that way as well. You have to harness that IMO. Not saying that it will work, but its worth a shot lol

He should get his money. He’s already been on a discount contract. All the other top forwards are fair or more than fairly compensated.

Why should he be the only one who takes less?

This is the salary cap Kyle Dubas structured. Everyone but the top 4 are a revolving door.

Which 29 year old player that plays his style has signed a 5-7 year extension and lived up to the contract?

Ladd, Backes, Lucic, Clarkson, Okposo etc have all fallen apart.

Ekholm
Granlund
Garland
Rakell

Were some of the names associated with the team during the year.

There are options on the market but Dubas needs to be bold. Dump salary. Rielly is overrated. Prioritize a dman that can run the PP. Either via trade or free agency.

Yup there is definitely that as well. But that's why you don't give him 6m.

But ya I hear ya, if this is the end for Zach as a Leaf it will be heartbreaking but it is what it is.

I don't think there is a smart scenario that involves him coming back as a Leaf. I loved him while he was here but let someone else make that mistake. We need to untangle a lot of problems of our own.

I disagree. But I understand where people are coming from. I think Zach still has more to give personally. He has unearthed some new found offense that I think he is just scratching the surface on personally. I would not give him anything over 4.5 personally

Wouldn't be the first guy to have a career year as a UFA.

it wasn't just a career year. Zach has evolved as a player and leader over the last 2 years. I can understand anyone not wanting to give him a big deal for sure, but he is a great player. If he gets 6 elsewhere, it is because he is worth it

Sure, but good teams don't pay for past performances.
