The name of the game is balance and diversity. You want different players to play different roles but when push comes to shove you need your scorers to hit and you need your hitters to score.

When you watch those classic Western Conference playoff series with the California teams or St. Louis or Vegas this year, it's striking how everybody on the team will buy into the same forechecking program. The more your team invests in hitting, the more worn down the other team will be so they won't be as fresh defending and hitting your stars. The more your stars hit back and compete, the more space they earn to operate.

Sure in an ideal scenario.

But for lost part hitting is something you control. Willingness thats it. It has a major impact in 7 game series and we didn't
Because we chose not to

Trusting his stars was his fatal mistake. On the surface it should not have been, but that is just how bad Marner was in that series.

Matthews actually did fairly well all things considered. 35 shots in 7 games with all that pressure on him is pretty good. Surprised he did not score more goals too. It's not like he had terrible shots or opportunities to score, but just could not get those clean snipes off and nothing else was going to beat Price unless it hit someone or Price messed up.

Matthews fell off after Game 4 but was generally good before then. I’d say there were a number of factors. Hyman playing hurt. Marner melting down beside him, inability of Keefe to get him away from coverage. Maybe over played. Obviously Tavares being hurt and having to carry the load solo.

If they can't re-sign Hyman, they need to use that money to sign a LEGIT shutdown #3 center. They lacked that all season.

So our plan should be take Matthews and Tavares off the ice in critical defensive situations? If that’s the case, I’m thinking the 23 million they share isn’t well spent.

I'm fine with a defensive C, but a shutdown C to match up seems ridiculous with our setup. We need to go strength on strength and win those matches

Not necessarily shutdown, but someone who won’t give up much, even when playing against better competition.

When Kadri was traded, Dubas, Shanny and Babs didn't say 'We are trading Kadri in the off season.'

To be fair (iirc), they weren't asked specifically about Kadri (he was also not a part of the "core 4"). If they did ask, the Leafs brass certainly didn't say they were or were not trading him.

In this years media pressers, everyone in the front office made it SUPER clear that they are NOT trading Marner, very blatantly. Sorry guys...but if you think they are still going to trade Marner after the comments of the year end pressers, you are so sorely mistaken....

No MGT would come out and say they are trading their star player.
Masai didn’t say anything about trading DD.

I am looking for the Leafs to improve and do well in playoffs and the fact that Habs is the only team with a 10mil plus player advancing to the 2nd round is something I noticed two years ago(at that time no team advanced with 10mil plus player). If JT, Marner and AM are at 9.75mil each, the diff is good enough for a top 6 forward or Top 3 Dman.
Like I said in another thread, it doesn’t matter how the Leafs spend to the Cap, as long as they win the Cup. As of now, having 3 10mil plus players ain’t working.

LOL dude ....did Masai blatantly tell the media straight up that he WASN'T going to trade DD? As far as I know, no. However, that is what Dubas, Shanny and Keefe all STRESSED yesterday. That the "core four" will all return in 21-22. If you think Marner is still going to be traded after yesterdays press conferences, you are a tin foiled hat conspiracy theorist lol.

I agree that the cap should be more logically spread out, however, it's abundantly clear that the Leafs management are NOT looking down that avenue right now. I for one am excited for how they try to make this work !

Will just wait and see.

I really want Bogosian and Spezza back. I could live with Simmonds on a cheaper deal. No interest in Thornton.

We traded Marchment for a midget, and then turned around and signed Simmonds.

Turns out that Marchment was a much more effective player than Simmonds during these playoffs, scoring two goals for Florida.

Simmonds should just retire along with Thornton, I would be shocked if any other team offered either a contract.

Goodrow and Armia are two guys who can be added for cheap-ish, who would be great in the bottom 6

Was Perry available and had interest in signing with the Leafs when they chose to go with Simmonds? I was OK with Simmonds, but would've really preferred Perry who ended up being half the price and much more effective, especially in the playoffs so far.

We are never going to win until this “core” decides to get dirty in 7 games x 4 series.

If the Board tells Shanahan theit plan isn't working & they want sig. changes to the core Marner is gone ....or they are. As far as I know the Mlse board hasn't met ...yet. That'll be the tell tale.

“We have an unbelievably talented general manager,” Marner said. “Everyone just wants to get in panic mode… and try and get something new or change something up. But I think they’ve got a lot of confidence in our team, like all of us do in our locker room.
“It’s up to [Dubas and president Brendan Shanahan] to decide what they want to do. But we all know how much talent we have, how much grit and will we play with, and we all want to win.
“Everyone wants to step up and take it upon themselves to be winners. I mean, that’s why it’s so disappointing right now — because we didn’t meet our own expectations.”

Mitch Marner responds to idea of breaking up Maple Leafs core - Sportsnet.ca

Signing Hyman is going to look like Clarkson, Ladd, Okposo, Lucic etc. He's at the age where the body goes.

I really like Goodrow and Coleman as players, but they are both likely going to get above-market value contracts now that they are trademarked "winners". Feels a lot like the 2013 Leafs going and getting Bolland and Clarkson. We should be trying to find the next Coleman instead

As far as the top 6 goes, if Marner was actually moved to allow for a cap-restructure, I think Conor Garland is a guy the Leafs should kick tires on (in a separate trade from the Marner one). The Coyotes asking price (or his salary demands) could be too much though
