Bet everything, the guy should say I will resign my position as Leafs GM if the same core does not get out of the 1st round next year. Have some balls Dubas you wishy washy Shanny puppet

Why should he resign? Let them fire him.

And as much as losing sucks, he has done his job. He's built a team that should have won at least one round the past three years. GMs need to put the team in a position to win, and he has done that. Changing things drastically is not going to guarantee success any more than what he is doing right now.

I didn't think Dubas would lose his job next year if they fail but if he straight up runs it back this year - then yeah I think he might. Would be Shanny too I think because I don't think he will ever fire Kyle - so would have to be an ownership thing.

Hes got guts though - all this pressure and hes sticking too it. Maybe hes nuts - but if they finally break through next year a lot of people will have to eat crow.

If you going all-in with this group and leaving yourself with 3 picks in each of the next two drafts is doing your job, I'd love to work for you or the Leafs.

He just signed with Detroit for 3M for 2 years.

Embarrassing for Carolina

Eh, Carolina is one of the smartest organizations out there. If it's money related, sure. But they may have their reasons

I was more talking acquisition cost anyway

Don't bet on it.

I would say Keefe gets the can tied around his neck when they fail next year and Dubas has to fire his friend, I can’t see them firing him, which is why he should resign if they fail again. None of this “if you read between the lines” implications
My guess is Dubas is 100% fired. Probably 50/50 chance Shanahan is fired (he should be though)

New GM probably decides on Keefe.

I'm in the same boat as you.

IMO the core has had enough chances to prove itself .. A shakeup is needed. I can't even really care about the regular season knowing that they just fold in the playoffs.

tbh, I'd be more supportive of running it back if we could actually add to the roster.

Right now the outlook seems so bleak. We have no draft picks over the next two years, which not only limits our options in a trade, but also makes me hesitant to trade from our existing prospect pool. Because we simply have no one coming in behind them.

We're going to lose Hyman, who is a legitimate top six winger. But we only have around ~$3-4M to replace him, depending on the price of a goalie and assuming Galchenyuk and Anderson fill out the remaining two spots. We could trade Mikheyev and Engvall but then we also need players to replace them as well and not just another Jimmy Vesey at league minimum.

It really looks like we're going to run back last year's team, just worse (minus Hyman), and somehow expect better results.

Call me blinded. But I feel that with some small adjustments this team may be better off this coming season than this past season. Montreal did not knock off only the Leafs, they knocked off Winnipeg in 4 straight and made easy work of Vegas which probably had their best lineup ever. Montreal got hot goaltending at the right time and played a team game. Their luck ran out and we dont know what the outcome would have been if Montreal had 2 lines to worry about if Tavares was in the lineup. To me the series would have been done in 4 or 5 games.

I believe Hyman leaving is a blessing. He was consistently played out of position and preventing better players from plying their trades. I see Micheyev and Robertson stepping up in a huge way this coming season.

Call me stupid. But if I am the Leafs I put big bodied Engvall on Matthews wing for a bit. The kid can shoot, has speed and has some feistiness. Try Engvall-Matthews-Nylander together. See what happens.

Why would people have to eat crow if the team performs like they should? Shows how low Leafs fans expectations have gotten.

Based on talent, few people doubt this team could be an easy playoff seed and conference finalist. The issue is that they have not once met expectations, and have instead consistently finished well below expectations.

No one should have to eat crow for this team finally doing something when it actually matters. Your hesitancy to trust Dubas and this core is well warranted.

We will definitely recycle some cheaper players through the line up. At the end of the day the core needs to carry this team through the playoffs though.

This off-season IMO was a ripe opportunity to re-tool the roster. Maybe take a small step back to take a bigger step forward. I.e. move Marner and Rielly for a nice package of futures to help create cap space and get some futures in the fold - this could allow the Leafs to leverage some assets to bring in a new core player.

This isn't doom and gloom of 15 years ago .. Only a few players are really on the back 9 of their prime (Tavares and Muzzin) .. Lots of time to do what Colorado did and move a core piece to retool.

They would have to eat crow because they're saying they have to make a huge move and this core can't get it done now - so if they get it done - they absolutely need to eat that crow.

Is the team good enough to win or not/is there a fundamental flaw with this "group"? If your answer is yes they have a fundamental flaw that needs to be changed, then they get it done - then yeah, Dubas proved those people wrong.

We'll have to see what happens.

He did but they ate much more money getting rid of Babs. Another first round loss won't fly in Toronto. If you think it is bad now, see you in a year.

Im probably in the minority here, and that's fair, but I would personally stick with Shanahan for a bit longer. I think his vision for the team has been solid but he placed too much trust in Dubas. The foundation is still there, hopefully he has learned from his mistakes and will bring in the right GM/coach if/when the clock runs out on Dubas/Keefe.

It would definitely be a short leash though.

I think they're banking on internal growth - guys like Robertson, Anderson, Sandin, Liljegren, Dermott to get better and contribute. Matthews and Marner to grow as players and figure out the playoffs.

If they fix their godawful powerplay - it makes the team a lot better too, just tacticly.

So they probably get someone in UFA who is worse than Hyman short-term, but then need internal growth to make up the difference and extend it. Definitely going to be really difficult though.

Sorry I am speechless after reading this post. But God bless you for being so optimistic.

I can see him being retained but when he stood up and tied himself at the hip with Dubas and his vision at the Babcock firing presser, he made his bed. That is why I believe he suffers the same fate as his boy blunder.

I'm not going to call you stupid, but the reason that Engvall was scratched was because the team was asking him to play with a bit more of an edge and he just wouldn't do it. They liked that he can skate and control the puck enough, but his lack of physicality was a bit of an issue. Simply put, the Leafs are going to have to find their Ondrej Palat. Tampa has Palat playing on the top 2 lines for the past 5-6 years? He doesn't get the credit that Kucherov or Point or Stamkos would get because he's not that type of skilled guy, but he's there for the stuff that Hyman would do for the Leafs. Get the puck and contribute a bit.
