Who are some similarish aged similarish upside forwards to Dermott who may be available from teams that are looking for blueline help? Someone who is currently an upgrade to our 3rd line, and who could still become a legit top 6 guy if development goes well. Foegele for example is probably about the calibre of player I'm thinking of, but Carolina doesn't need Dermott I don't think.

Sandin is NHL ready, and Liljegren likely is too. I think if we can sign a cheap defensive bottom pairing guy, Dermott becomes relatively expendable.

Lawson Crouse.

Lawson Crouse.

Yep, that's a great example actually. Arizona may be losing Goligoski, Hjalmarsson, and Demers to free agency, and sounds like OEL is getting traded.

Crouse would certainly bring an element we're missing.

Lawson Crouse.

We have plenty of fourth liners already.

We need to find a player that can be physical but is also productive in other areas, that can play higher in the lineup.

@613Leafer was on the right track with Foegele. Return won’t be Dermott - but considering what CAR just traded Ned for due to the possibility of not qualifying him, it wouldn’t take much to acquire Foegele I don’t think.

Heck, they may take the cost certainty of a Engvall or Mikheyev

Tyson Jost?

They only have 3 dmen signed right now (albeit leftys).

Maybe?

Crouse has shown to be a very good 3rd liner in the past. He scored at a 20 goal pace in 2020, and he’s a heavily used PKer.

Also, he asked for somebody comparable to Dermott…

Yeah Boston galaxy-brained a draft when they passed on Barzal, Connor and Chabot. That has got to be one of the biggest whiffs of our generation. They could have all 3 on their team today

If they had drafted those players they could have another ring or two and set them up for next 10 years

If stories about Arizona's financial concerns are real...

To Arizona: Kerfoot (after bonus is paid, 3.5M owed over two years), Dermott and Engvall. (I would throw in Liljegren to do this, Arizona has 6 UFA defensemen, two young D for Zona at 2.36M combined and RFA status after current deals are up would be a godsend.)
To Toronto: Dvorak, Crouse, rights to Conor Garland.

xxx(Galch at 1.5M?) Matthews Garland (2.25M/2) (Garland balks, let him sit, he's 25. Only so many years. Matthews, you're that good? Ok, here's some talent and feistiness, make it work.)
Crouse Tavares Nylander. (Crouse can bang for JT and WN, they're good. Initially thought Robertson, but...)
Robertson Dvorak Marner. (Mitch, you're a star? Re-ignite Dvorak and feed NR, should be a defensively responsible line too.)
Mikheyev Brooks Spezza/Simmonds (A little of this, a little of that, not great but serviceable? Alternate Spezza and Simmonds/play the hot hand/fit the opponent)
xxx(Anderson?)

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Sandin xxx(Hakanpaa/Savard/Hjalmarsson? 2M/?)
xxx(Hutton/Pysyk/Schenn/Chara? .8M/)

Campbell
xxx

Kessel at 1.2M (last year, huuzzaaa)

Leaves about 3M for a 1B goalie.

This isn't all bad and makes some sense. I like Dvorak as a 3rd line center and Garland would be a very good LW upgrade and help the loss of Hyman.

Crouse is pretty overrated based on his draft pedigree and not a player you plug next to Tavares and Nylander at all. I don't think he'd be someone Dubas would be interested in, but if that's the cost to get the other 2 players... might be ok to see if a change of scenery does anything for him (like they tried with Ceci).

That one stings...

The DeBrincat one is really rough because I think he genuinely was the consensus for that opening round pick in the Matthews draft. Most of us thought he was going late 1st, we woke up - and they picked the overager in the draft nobody had really heard of in Korshkov :|

Wonder if anyone gives him a shot. I know I wouldn't.

Montreal was rumored to be interested in him last year. The guy has skill but he has the personality of a jackal. Same goes for Hoffman, the guy is one of the best snipers in the league but no one wants to sign him long term because of the S#!t him and his girlfriend were doing in Ottawa. Morally questionable.

Yeah this team doesn't need a guy like that. They still seem too mentally fragile at times. Adding a guy like this maybe to a more veteran team might work. These Leafs still need to take some big steps.
