Spot on. We can't fix all our problem this off season, but you can make a big dent to it. Why spend asset or cap space on a goalie like Saros, when we could sign Stolarz or Brossoit for half of Saros cap space.

I rather we spend most of the cap space fixing the d corp, so that once the playoff comes Stolarz/Brossoit/Woll are insulated by a strong d corps.

If Woll turns out not to be our goalie, you can fix it next off season with Tavares off the books and Saros, Hill, Shersterkin, Ullmark as free agent. It's better to wait next off season to finally address the goalie issue.
Why spend assests on Saros? Because one is a proven top 10 goaltender in the NHL, and the other is a career backup with less than 150gp at age 31.

Your logic is we should waste another year on seeing if Woll can stay healthy, and then if he can’t, sign one of the two guys available now via trade..

Toronto can fix their D-core issue and goaltending issue this year and use the cap next season to fix their forwards.

sorry, should've phrased it better. Didn't mean Minten + Robertson + 1st, just any of the 3

Yeah, that's totally appropriate.

It won’t be. Gauthier had a reputation as a problem kid with an attitude. McGroarty has the reputation of a future captain that plays the hard physical game that every GM wants in a player.

Our realistic offers would be 23rd + Minten + Liljegren or something like Cowan straight up. Jets needs are centres and RHD so maybe the first package gets it done if they like those players.

When was the last time you saw a king's ransom paid for a college prospect threatening not so sign? And to be clear, McGroarty is not a top 5 or even top 10 pick.

Why spend assets on Saros, when he's a free agent next season and we could sign him for free. There is a risk he wouldn't be there but that's fine, we'll go after Adin Hill.

The difference between Saros and that career backup is that career backup won a cup, while Saraos hasn't. He played 8 games and has 5 wins, his stat wasn't good but 5 wins is more than enough for a series win.

Toronto needs at least 2 to 3 dman, also we should resign one of Bertuzzi or Domi. That leaves not much room to bring in a goalie like Saros.

My logic is that we surround Stolarz/Brossoit/Woll with a good d corps, while having a good d-zone structure. If the goalie position is still struggling, then next year is when we should fix this position with one of Saros, Hill, Shersterkin, Ullmark as free agent.

Realistic trade value aside he’s probably worth more than the 10th overall to us in our specific situation because he can come in and play productive middle 6 minutes next year on an ELC compared to waiting 2-3 years on a guy picked 10th overall this year.

Friedman saying the Jets are talking Rutger McGoarty in trade talks, presumably doesn’t want to sign there.

If he is amenable to Toronto, could be a great target. I remember liking his game in his draft year, seems like a winning player.

So a team that scores 2 goals a game in the playoffs is going to piss another year away because we still can't score?

He's a #14OA who's done nothing but improve his stock
You aren't getting him cheap with 30 other teams in on him

1-If you spend on Saros, you will not need to be as much good in your d group to overcome your goalie and the fact your trading for him right now drastically increasing the chance to resign him long term.

2- Saros is the only reason why Nashville didn't finished like one of the worst team in NHL in the last 4 years, put exemple Kahkonen or reimer unstead of Saros and i don't think they would got more succes than San Jose. Saros is one of 5 best goalie actually in the NHL and he's able to hide a lot of hole in front.

3- Why Toronto should absolutly need to resign one of bertuzzi/domi?

Knies-matthews-Nylander
Mcmann-tavares-Marner
Robertson-Holmberg-Cowan
Jarnkrok-Kampf-Reaves/dewar

do they really need to resign 1 of those 2 player? not sure.

Get an elite like Saros can help a team to score more goal? How a goalie can help to score more goal? Just by giving to his teammate a bigger freedom to take offensive risk without paying the price everytime that didn't work and get caught out of position.

So if you can be more agressive in the offensive end, you will create more thing in the offensive end and increase your offensive.

He traded 2 of the 5 good picks, and also tried to trade best one.
There were more than 5 good picks, and he didn't try to trade the best one. He traded 1 of his 35 drafted prospects as a future, and it was for the long-term addition of a top pairing defenseman that also brought surplus value himself. It's wild that you're attempting to claim that that's bad and excessive.
So 2 players out and 1 player in.... doesn't sound like "adding"....
What are you even talking about? It was one NHL player out, after the surplus value had been extracted from them, in exchange for an addition to the pool.

So get a goaltender and we hang him out to dry because we don't score enough?

That shouldn't backfire at all

There are 5 picks that have become legit NHLers. He has traded 2 of those 5, and Shanahan blocked a Knies trade.

There are a few more likely or possible NHLers to come, so it's a good thing Dubas got fired before he could trade them away too.

What are you even talking about? It was one NHL player out, after the surplus value had been extracted from them, in exchange for an addition to the pool.

Durzi out for a veteran. Sandin out for a pick. That's minus 2 players, and plus 1 pick. That's not adding to the pool.

Edit - still waiting for your list...

Risk i was more talking about gamble so it's pretty similar to what i said but what should be plan B considerating the D market last off-season.

2- His offrnsive game never really been an issue for Klinberg. He had defensive issues for sure but outside of Anaheim so i'm not agree in the part he didn't handle that part for a couple seasons. he was in pace for 50 pts / 82 games in any of his season except in last season and 2020 when he reached the stanley cup final

FWIW, it's Klingberg, not Klinberg.

The idea of hockey, is to score more goals than your opponent. It's been well known, for a long time that Klingberg is a terrible player defensively, and despite his offense, the puck ends up in his net, far more than it does in the opponents. Going back to 2019/20... he's -10, -15, -28, -28, on pace for -42.

Being a complete liability defensively and consistently for years has been known for a long time now. It was a bad idea last year, and it's an even worse idea now. Like Tabernacle, this is just a terribly bad idea.

At the time, I suggested we would have been better off signing Gustafsson.... how did that work out? Terrible defensively, with no physicality. He’s a total liability. The idea of bringing back Klingberg is a historically brain dead idea.

Main thing is Klingberg isn’t even the type of offense we’re lacking, his point shot is mediocre and he scores most of his goals walking in to the circles like Rielly does. He’s better than Rielly at walking the line and getting head fakes off to create a lane, but the shot isn’t elite and when he gambles wrong he can’t recover at all like Rielly can sometimes. If he was healthy maybe he marginally improves the powerplay but we also probably give up more short handed goals on his high risk play style.

3C is a huge hole in this lineup and it needs to be addressed. Holmberg can replace Kampf, but your 3C needs to carry more offense than Holmberg and more defense than Domi

Roslovic? He's probably going to get Domi type money 3-4M? and he's good for half a point per game

Weegar fits our team very well.
With them trading Markstrom...are they even trying to compete next season?
Seems like it would be smart for them to sell high on him at this point.

So, I’m not clear in this, but can’t McGroarty leave college and become a FA?
Apparently if he does leave, he’s a free agent after 30 days?

McGroarty is one of those players where if we don't get him, 90% chance he goes to one of our rivals and ends up being a pain in the ass to play against for the next decade.

Watch the Bruins get him and turn him into Prime Lucic

All depends on where he wants to go, but if the Leafs are a team he's willing to go to, we should definitely be in on him.

He's exactly the type of player we need more of, he's NHL ready, has a high ceiling, and will be on a cheap ELC.

I'd love Andersson, too. Not sure if his cost would be a bit less than Weegar but either one would be great adds.

Yep both those players would be significant adds.
Calgary actually has alot of quality players for a team that's been bad the past few years.
I also like Connor Zary, especially if he can stick at the C position.
