Just pointing out that Dreger is a shill when Toronto players come up for contract renewals versus the verbiage/tone when another star player in another market is up for a contract renewal.
He's just catering to his home market.
IMO, people hear what they want to hear.

The GM is going to decide what fits salary wise, whatever Dreger says is irrelevant.
Did he have any effect on the Nylander or Matthews signings?

I don't think anyone effected the Matthews deal.

I think Dreger was one of many publicly putting the pressure on the Nylander deal...I think we were all thinking in that Timo Meiier range of like 8-9.5M for 8 years and somehow an extra 2M appears on the aav over what people were expecting here.

I suppose he could point to Huberdeau and Gaudreau getting 10.5M as UFA but that's still an extra million on top.

No one had a gun to Tree's head but definitely looks like Dreger, among others in the media kept pushing stupid numbers.

Yes, but it's fine and dandy to spend money on the blue line, but you need to get really good players if you're going to go with two goalies with less then 30 games played per season, there is no sheltering them. I'm just not a fan of 1 of the 4 years left with AM34 we are going with wishy washy goaltending.

I don't think spending 6.5m/7m on Montour and 5.25m/5.5m on Zadorov for example would be the best use of spending money on the blueline.

Depends on what role you are giving the new guys.

Montour doesn't PK, but played most even strength minutes regular season, but is 2nd. pairing in the playoffs. He looks like what you use for offense, not defense.

Take Rielly off the PP1, for Montour, but I'm not sure he'd be best use of Cap.

OEL, seemed to rejuvenate his career there, or perhaps he wasn't employed properly in Vancouver? He's UFA, and this year he was cheap. I don't see him signing a deal like that again.

Leaf need Cliff Fletcher back who brought us Dougie Gilmour and Mats Sundin in blockbuster trades.

My trade proposal ... Leafs and NYI's ..

TO NYI: :isles

Mitch Marner ($10,903,000) + Morgan Rielly ($7,500,000) + Joseph Woll ($766,667) + Timothy Liljegren (RFA past $1,400,000) = $20.56 mil total AAV

TO TORONTO: :leafs

Matty Barzal ($9,150,000) + Noah Dobson ($4,000,000) + Ilya Sorokin ($8,250,000) + Scott Mayfield ($3,500,000) = $24.9 mil total AAV

Conclusion:

Leafs address all their needs in 1 shot ... Barzal becomes Leafs #2C replacing an aging JT .. Sorokin gives Leafs their proven #1G and Dobson and Mayfield are both RHD filling out the right side.

NYI gain a little Cap space to re-sign Marner long-term and Woll and Liljegren are young and were both drafted by Lou Lam when he was Leafs GM.

Who is with me on this?

Smart team wanting to trade him to open up cap space doesn’t really get me excited about putting a package together to acquire him.
A smart team that has to pay Nichushkin over 6m to be suspended and make room for Landeskog’s 7m returning to the books.

Not surprising that the cap casualty is a 3rd liner. Don’t know how that’s an indictment on Colton.

Every Leafs fan. Too bad not even Lou is senile enough to make that trade. Now if the Isles' goal is to tank, that trade would pretty much guarantee them last place and a trip to the SCF for the Leafs.

Fletcher made some of our best trades, but also worst.

Lou is crazy enough to do this if he really wanted a player, or didnt like one of his. he has a history of being petty, but no idea if he dislikes Barzal that much, and he loves his mediocre talent guys like Mayfield ...deal would be more likely without Mayfield (21.4 aav instead).

Sorokin has lost the starters job in the playoffs 2 seasons in a row (which makes zero sense) so, they could listen there.

Hardest part to move would be getting Rielly to waive. Lou would like him for sure, but, Rielly loves being here.

I am with you Mess but Lou isn't :) Sorokin is a star goalie with many healthy productive years ahead of him. He was signed to that deal as a long term solution in net. Varlamov is old AF and Woll appears glass so they would have traded their solution for massive uncertainty. I am not sure a signed Marner gets you much more than a 70 pt RD straight up but Mo does not nearly bring back a Barzal. I believe that Lilly has limited trade value but he should get you Mayfield after a bad year.

Isles give up 3 big pieces and Leafs give up 1. What would Rielly, Woll and Lilly get as a package? Not 1 of those big pieces comes back for scraps. So no.

Marner has 1 year left and has delusions of contract grandeur dancing in his head. IMO that hurts his value as his floor starts at $10.9M. Because of the NM, and maybe even without it, he can't be traded even up for a solution. They need to deal him for the best combination of assets from an acceptable landing site and then parlay those assets into a better lineup. Hint: Start with 10.9M in cap space as an asset because it gets you two FA right shot D this year and closes a huge hole. And then you fill his spot with a player capable of getting 3 pts or more in a playoff series.

NYI are short of Cap space and then they would have Rielly @ $7.5 mil and Pulock @ $6.150 & Pelech @ $5.75 mil as well as Romanov $2.5 mil as top 4 with Liljegren rounding it out.

Mayfield is coming off a broken ankle and sitting on LTIR and locked in long-term. To resign Dobson who is in last year of current deal might cost Mo Riells money.

I didn't realize Mayfield was getting $3.5M now.

He's a good defenseman. I think he would look good alongside Benoit. Price is a bit steep for a bottom pairing defenseman though.

But I can definitely see why the attraction.

Reinhart's season was an aberration, and whoever pays him based on his 57 goals is going to regret it. he has also be a huge no-show in this Oilers series so far when they need his ability the most.
Open look shots and he nails the logo.

Sam Reinhart is whatever, but he is on the cusp of a championship and has 9 playoff goals this spring. Marner has 11 playoff goals in his entire career.

This isn’t Reinhart is the be all end of everything but if we’re going to nitpick players, we can absolutely destroy Marner for what his flaws are.

In the normal course of things that $12.5
million is getting crunched down.

12.5M x 8 is one of the highest contracts in the history of the game. It would be an astonishing decision to give it to the 3rd best player on the team

As a #8 guy... sure... at league minimum... but not in any other role.

God no.

Gio, you’ve been a warrior but you are delusional if you think you can play.

Offer him an office role or send him on his way. A minimum contract is still a waste on him.

He’s done. He can go elsewhere.

Yeah. Every NHL team, all the stars are cooperative and happy to earn the same or less as the next guy.

Meanwhile in Toronto we have to give Marner a raise on a current overpay deal, while trying to trade him away, but can’t because other teams don’t want to pay him what he’s after…

Like Dreger, stop speaking for the other Darren.
I love how the second a trade comes up Dreger is like “ohh no no no that’s not happening, remember guys Mitch is in control here, he negotiated that NMC in good faith” shut up Darren.

God forbid a team tries to make a trade on a guy with a NMC
