How anyone can say that matthews is the 2nd best player in the world is beyond me.

Mcdavid best not even close
Draisitl 2nd best
Mackinnon 3rd
Makar 4th

Matthews somewhere after that

I don’t just go by goals I go with other intangibles like carrying a team on your back when your losing, willing to do whatever it takes to win.

Matthews is a goal scorer with decent defense but unable to carry the team on his back while being the highest paid player on the team.

We will never win a cup with him

McDavid by far the better player.

Offensively sure, especially on the PP.

Defensively, no.

I am chalking last season up as an anomaly for Matthews' unless it is an injury that will hinder him moving forward, and before that, he was putting up some insane numbers, the last 3 seasons before.

Over those 3 seasons, he was pacing for 62 goals and 105 points.

The same amount of ESP as Drai (fewer games), and just back of McDavid (also fewer games, but not much less).

I feel like people are forgetting what kind of scoring Matthews was doing, even before that 60 goal season.

Well, before his one anomaly of a season where he was injured, he had won the Hart and Lindsay.

He produces better than Drai minus the powerplay where McDavid helps a lot.

Matthews is a better defensive player than everyone you listed.

None of the players you listed have carried their team on their back and won anything. Makar is the closest.

That is how.

Draisaitl is NOT the second best player in the world. The second best player in the world needs to be good at even strength and at least average defensively.

Excuses for matthews
Everyone plays hurt.
All the players I mentioned have carried their team on their backs. We won one round in 7 years of our greatest player.
He didn’t score a goal against Florida oh right injuries lol

Matthews doesn’t have what it takes to suck it up and win at all costs. Too busy with his man purse and fashionista costumes and rolling with the Biebs.

We paid him as the second highest paid player in the league for the last five years and has failed to elevate his game in the playoffs.

Explain how you can say that and have draisaitl number 2, then?
Watch drai he goes to all the dirty areas of the rink to make things happen. Matthews numbers don’t come close to what Drai puts up. His team has gone further than our team lead by the second highest paid player in the league

I've watched Drai, live even. How does any of what you say he does relate to him putting a team on his back and winning? He hasn't won anything and he plays with the best player in the world.

How do you rank him ahead of Mackinnon with your own parameters?

By the way, McDavid is the second highest paid player in the league so maybe you should do some research since you don't know what you're talking about.

McDavid has missed the playoffs multiple years and has gone past the 2nd round once... amazing carrying of a team.

Draisaitl is worse.

Looking at his stats, there is an outlier and it happens to be the year he played hurt, maybe it is just a coincidence.

People on here are talking how great matthews is and we should be happy paying him 13.5 million
How in the hell does he deserve that kind of money
He won’t sign long term
His playoff performance is atrocious
Didn’t get a point against Florida in 5 games
Oh I forgot he was hurt lol

He is a prima Donna who is only after the money not the sweater on his back.

If we pay more by CH%, that is insane and I'll say so.

He is the second best player in the world unless you think his injury will continue. He was the best the last time he was healthy, although I still think McDavid is better.

This whole board is littered with people such as yourself that do not understand that the cap changes and the dollar amount is irrelevant.

On the "buriable contract", it still leaves 200k on the books, not a big deal, the bigger deal is he is clearly here to play, so the full hit is there, where you could have played someone like McMann for half his hit and got a better player.

The overpayment of Kampf + Reaves is probably what Marner was overpaid and people lose it over that.
No you won’t.

I was a sore loser as a kid.

Nothing wrong with that. Just shows you care. Screw losing graciously, that's for chumps.

And losers.

Which is why Matthews deserved to be benched. You don't play to win. You play to not lose.

Look what Nashville is doing.

A locker room overhaul. Surrounding the young guys with vets possessing the right attitude. No loser mentalities allowed.

Maybe the Leafs should have tried that.

Instead of washed up old men that never won anything. Marleau, Thornton, Spezza, and Giordano. Bringing in a guy with the nickname "No Show" Joe seems questionable at best.

And outright stupid in hindsight.

That's why Trotz has the right idea. Don't let the young guys learn it's acceptable to lose. They don't need a "win at all costs" mentality.

They need a "don't lose at all costs" one instead.

What’s the deal with Garland? If he was on Toronto and playing in their offence I think he could be a 55-65 point player. For 4.9 million a year that seems like a good deal.

He could be okay, nice 3rd. liner.

They do have some Cap issues, but the Leafs can't solve those, so a 3rd. team would have to get involved.

That’s how it works in any sport. Player salaries keep going up because that’s what their agent and the players association keeps pushing. It’s really not all that hard to figure out.

i guess for you the 'dirty areas' doesnt include from behind his own net to his blue line, and only from the red line forward into the offensive zone.
the only time Drais is in his own end is for a faceoff after an icing.

It doesn’t mean we have to keep giving him more money than he deserves

They can ask whatever they want we are not obligated to give it to him.

This isn’t baseball or basketball where there is no hard cap. Every million he grinds out of us determines the product we put on the ice.

Matthews is all about himself and greed.

Stamkos was given the option to explore the league with a Lightning offer in hand.

Good Canadian Kid stuck with Tampa.

Yeah, look at Nashville adding guys like O'Rielly, Schenn, and Barrie. The Leafs would never do something like that!

:eyeroll:
Yes, it’s such a shame that even when we add veterans who have won, we still can only barely get by the 1st round, and then go out with a whimper in the next round. But someday (how long have we been saying that) luck will be on our side, right? I mean, we have the core who will do what they can, because they can’t do it all, they will need help., as well as LUCK!

You’re right. Toronto doesn’t have to keep giving him more money but you’re crazy if you don’t think he’ll get that on the open market. Whatever it is. When he’s on his game he’s unstoppable and he’s taking longer to figure that out in the playoffs but you don’t trade or let your number 1 centre and arguably the best scorer walk because of a million or 2. You figure out who to move so you can keep him.

Would you rather they go back to the centremen they had before Matthews came to Toronto?
