I guess the only way this Eklund character has ever made a correct prediction is by making many semi-educated guesses. I've even hit on a low percentage of correct musings with zero connection to the hockey world. You just look at rosters, team needs, team cap squeezes, teams with extra players at positions, connections of a player to a city/GM, etc. and ocassionally you make a correct prediction. And it helps to act like you aren't guessing. There's always someone who buys into a display of confidence.

You’re right. Toronto doesn’t have to keep giving him more money but you’re crazy if you don’t think he’ll get that on the open market. Whatever it is. When he’s on his game he’s unstoppable and he’s taking longer to figure that out in the playoffs but you don’t trade or let your number 1 centre and arguably the best scorer walk because of a million or 2. You figure out who to move so you can keep him.

Would you rather they go back to the centremen they had before Matthews came to Toronto?
There comes a point in time you have to say no to your kids. If you let one player dictate all the rules then when is enough enough.
He hasn’t been unstoppable in 7 playoff series and how long should we go on giving him this extra 2 million for him to figure it out. We figure out who to move each year to accommodate his greed and look at those results.

I would rather have another center who compliments the team rather than an entitled unstoppable player who has taken 7 years and still can’t figure it out.

Lots of names if we decide to build from the net out instead of being held hostage by matthews for another 3 years so he can once again vanish in the playoffs and still demand bigger bucks.

It has to end somewhere

Are you going to tell me without matthews we won’t make the playoffs
Maybe it might take a few years to be a contender but we aren’t a contender now with him here because of his greed we can’t get supplementary players. With him being so greedy we can’t fix out goaltending or our defense

Capfriendly uses the year the contract was signed to calculate cap percentage, not the year the contract starts in.

Makes a difference for these cap hit % debates.

So 2 unavailable RFA players and 2 older players who have never won anything while being the core of a team. Terrible options, you couldn't even come up with something remotely attractive or realistic.

I've decided you're just a whiner, whining about Matthews for the sake of whining.

16.67 percent of 83.5 million would be 13.9 million.

Is he signing this year or when the cap increases next year? It is projected to be 87.5 million.

If the GM is using this year's cap for negotiations Matthews will just wait I am sure.

Well we don’t know what is happening behind the scenes so calling him entitled is a bit harsh.

He’s an amazing player. Sometimes figuring things out isn’t a straight line. I’d rather have a player like Matthews and pay him a little more than having some of those terrible centremen that Toronto had for 15 years before he showed up. I don’t think you realize how hard it is to find a centremen of his caliber. Number 1 centre. Plays a great 2 way game and is arguably the best goal scorer right now.

I understand your frustration but don’t agree with let him walk or trading him.

Sometimes we don’t realize what we have until it’s gone.

I’ve decided you’re just a matthews fanboy who will justify matthews greed and inability to carry the team no matter what he has shown.
In no possible realm of reality does matthews deserve to be the leagues highest paid player.

Disappears every playoff. Always an excuse for him. When the games get tough he disappears. Not a team player at all only in it for greed. I hope he goes ufa make him someone else’s problem. If he is your number one guy be prepared to get bounced early in the playoffs.

What excuses have I made? When did I say he deserves to be the highest paid player in the league?

All I've done is point out your hypocrisy and ask you simple questions like who you would replace him with and you've just whined and whined with no real reasoning or fact checking.

You don't even know how much he makes relative to players in the league right now, let alone have the ability to forsee what he will make in the future. You weren't capable of doing the smallest amount of research to support your own opinions and when you're shown that, you ignore it and spout more nonsense.

The problem is, management will do the same with Marner. Now you’re looking at more players you need to replace with cheaper players. How has that worked out over the last 5 years?

Matthews doesn't deserve to be overpaid. But you could give a GM 14 million this free agency and he wouldn't be able to replace the value that he brings.

The Leafs signed the biggest named free agency centre in the history of the cap era, and now half the fanbase would give him away for free.

How many offseasons did JfJ, Burke and Nonis combined try and build a competitive centre group?

Weird that Simon Benoit hasn't signed with a team yet (in the bottom right of this chart). Only 24 and his defensive underlyings are solid.

Unfortunately if we are too aggressive saying no, those kids move out and they never come back.

We're simply at the point where you have to do a cost analysis on whether some form of overpay is worth it to keep the era going. In the case of Matthews it's clear we don't have that many options unless you are willing to stomach a dramatic retool. In the case of Nylander, I'd prefer to keep him, but there's a limit to the overpay.
