Willys had to know his piece of the pie is dwindling.

I wouldn’t wanna lose him for nothing - but I also have no interest in trading him for a “rental” fee either.

So I don’t really know. Unless someone steps up with a sign/trade level value…. We may be looking at keeping our own rental

2024-2025 Leafs

Matthews 13.25
Marner 10.93
Nylander 10M
Tavares 11M

Total = 45.18M out of 87.5M cap = 51.6%

This team will not be winning anything for 2 more years barring a Woll/Samsonov carry.

2023-2024 leafs are pretty screwed too

Matthews: 11.634M
Marner: 10.893M
JT: 11M
Nylander:6.96

Total = 40.484M out of 83.5M = 48.4%

The cap increase from 2024 to 2025 is 4.8%, our big 4 core will be 3.2% higher taking 2/3 of that increase lol

We are heavily screwed until JT can be ridden off. 11M freed and hopefully an impact C and upgrade to the D comes with that money

Another 2 Years will be wasted/burned in the Matthews Era

Not if they don't get any goals out of $23mm of it in a playoffs round.

Just complete greed from top to bottom. This team has no chance in 2024-25.

Well now we can’t pay him 10 million and of course he isn’t 4-5 million less than matthews in terms of skill. So yes he is gone. I hope we can get something good for him preferably a young dman with potential
Hallebuyck and scheiffle in a nylander/Murray deal idea would be dreamy
Finally get a legit goalie for these years with 34

5 PTO guys I'd look into:

Mason Shaw:
A tenacious forward who plays big for his size. He's gritty on the forecheck, and has shown to be an effective penalty killer. I believe he also has some untapped offensive potential, as he has good playmaking skills. If his knee is better, he'd be absolutely worth a gamble.

Noah Gregor: A winger with blazing speed. He's defensively responsible and is physical on the forecheck. I could see him developing into a good penalty killer. Worth a gamble on a PTO.

Tyler Motte: High Energy, high tempo player who is a great penalty killer. We need another killer, and I think he'd be a nice add.

Paul Stastny - With our 4c spot being completely open bringing in an experienced vet isn't a bad idea. Great on the faceoff dot, and can chisel in offence when needed.

Ryan Spooner: Here's my off the board pick. Guy hasn't been in the nhl for a few years but has been very successful at the KHL level since. Could add a scoring touch to the bottom 6.

I'd bring in 2. PTOs add more competition to training camp and sometimes they work out. No point in not trying out a few guys hoping something sticks.

The whole idea is we have 1 forward spot available (likely the only spot available). Let's make it difficult.

I'd like to see Nylander on a similar short term deal now. 3-4 years @ 9m is what I am hoping for. Then let him have 1 last big payday when we're ready to retool.

I didn't even realize Stastny was an option. I would totally take him on our team on the cheap.

No one signed Motte? We could really use another PK guy.

Solid list of candidates. I think Motte has concussion issues so it would be an interesting one. I do think the Leafs need more speed and tenacity overall so he fits a role there.

Gregor probably is a better target for the same kind of role. He could be a good tweener to provide depth. Not sure his 2-way game is all that good from what I read, haven't seen much of him last year though. He's only 25 years old so there's probably some form of potential there and could be interesting to see how he does in a new market. 10 goals last year is decent for his role.

Stastny would be OK but he's turning 38 years old and likely can't make the team out of camp unless a few things go in his favour. His skating and overall game isn't at all good anymore. I don't think he fits much what they need to me.

Spooner and Shaw are Marlies at best. But for a PTO... can't hurt?

Well done.. send this list to Brad

I think Spooner could surprise alot of people

Treliving stated that they're looking to add depth up front but didn't say if he meant on PTO or not.

Did he comment on the D at all? I don’t think it’s the problem others have talked about, but there’s still plenty room for improvement

PTO Motte and Stastny. Why not

Has there been any discussion about us getting a compensatory puck for Amirov? I know Sather requested and received one for Cherepanov. Not exactly the same scenario here, I’m wondering if there are other examples where compensatory picks were given.

Not a chance the league is going to give us anything.

No discussion, and I wouldn't expect anything.

Thanks I wasn’t really thinking we would, but I remembered there being a “cherepanov rule” written when that happened. I looked it up and it turns out we would only be entitled to compensation if Amirov hadn’t signed his ELC, which is a weird distinction imo, but nevertheless it makes it pretty black and white.

Logan Shaw is a pretty darn good AHL player. I wouldn't object to upgrading him to a 2 way NHL deal for this season.

BTW, players on AHL deals who come to NHL camps and even play in pre-season games, aren't they all on PTOs?
