It wasn't really a Cherepanov rule or something special done for the Rangers. The rule was that if a 1st round pick doesn't sign then the drafting team gets a comp pick.Thanks I wasn’t really thinking we would, but I remembered there being a “cherepanov rule” written when that happened. I looked it up and it turns out we would only be entitled to compensation if Amirov hadn’t signed his ELC, which is a weird distinction imo, but nevertheless it makes it pretty black and white.
Since it wasn't explicitly defined about a player dieing the Rangers had to argue that since he died he couldn't sign and therfor they were entitled to the pick - which makes logical sense to me.
