I am not saying we should just run it all back. Those teams made changes too. We need to be looking at that for sure.

I also think that our inability to get past the first round has had some thing to do with getting Tampa and Boston.

Not getting past Montreal was the inexcusable one though.

My larger point if we have to make good hockey moves it we are moving out our core guys. Trading Tkachuk did not work out for Calgary and will set them back for sure.

Calgary had to trade Tkachuk or he was going to walk in 1 year.

You'll have to face good teams in the playoffs if you want to win anything, no excuses about your opponent.

I think the perception is even a mercenary Meier showed more loyalty to NJ than our homegrown stars to the Leafs.

I'd guess it was the dollars and the one and done for 8 years.
Doesn't have to move again in a year.
Joining a young and rising team, compared to what he left.
Wonder how many articles have been written in NJ about how he failed in the playoffs?
Meier 11 games, 2 goals 2 assists.
Nylander 11 games, 4 goals 6 assists.

Nylander would be buried in Toronto with those stats.

Right, so that would be a good cautionary tale for trying to trade Nylander right now, no? If we have decided we are not going to meet his asking price then we will be trading a guy going to walk in a year.

Yep, you have to beat good teams to win a cup. Most teams don't do that and don't win cups. My point is that the Leafs have had first round opponents that best us (in 7), beat the n next guys and the next guys (in fewer than 7). You beat the Leafs, you go to a SC final. It's worth considering when talking about "wanting more playoff success" (which we all want). How would we feel if we were Carolina fans. Win in our division for a round or two and get swept by the Atlantic team EVERY year? Swept every year. Would we feel closer to the cup of we had that record?

The cautionary tale would be Gaudreau even though Calgary offered a lot apparently.

The rest is just mental gymnastics to feel okay about losing.

Actually, I am not ok with losing. Where did I say that I was? Because I am not stamping my feet and complaining about things even though I have no ideas that are better?

What specifically should the Leafs do with Nylander right now?

I don't know if you're stamping your feet, this is an internet forum.

With Nylander, they should probably just come up with the maximum amount they're comfortable in paying him, make him said offer and tell him there is a deadline and if they decline. Begin looking at options for trade. You do not let an asset walk for nothing.

I may have misunderstood your position here, apologies if I did.

I thought you were complaining about what the Leafs are doing this offseason. It's quite possible that they are doing with Nylander exactly what you just said they should do.

I agree with that approach too.

I think they have to sign Matthews first, then things will fall into place.

Matthews is the sticking point for the extensions.

this is the likely scenario, since Nylander is rumored to be willing to take a 'team friendly' deal only if Matthews does, and if Matthews doesnt, that also likely means Nylander will be dealt, rather than resigned.
I'd expect Carolina (Pesce +) and Columbus (Peeke or Jirichek +) to be the primary targets if Tre was being honest about fixing the Blue line.

Nylander could really help CBJ's offense, thats still a weak spot, and he'd likely fit in well next to Aho also (prob better than Matthews/Tavares because of style of play and pace).

We sure would like to know the 10 team NTC eh?

Maybe just sort NHL by Team points and select the bottom 10?

Or could he have listed based on available Cap space?

Everyone's is different it seems..some guys seem to use them to turn them into defacto NMCs by adding their most likely trade destinations

Yeah, like I said, Nylander and Meier have never been comparable players. Just people saw a guy who was headed to free agency commit right away to their new program and saw a good example where our guys are rotten eggs.

Personally I think 88’s main objective is to get paid as much as possible, what team shells out that dough is secondary, sure he’d probably like to stay in Toronto, but imo that’s not important. Ditto for Matthews, Marner I see as the one who wouldn’t be keen on leaving Toronto………

I moved across the country, with a young family, for a about a $15k increase 25 years ago. I did however not even look at Toronto as an option, where there would have been more options. I could see him look at other cities that might be nicer to live in, where he'll also get better treatment and opportunities even without more coin. (Better treatment? Well, his name isn't Matthews or marner.)

I mean, at worst you're looking at a prospect + 1st as a rental at the TDL if you wanted to stretch it out.

Garland even at his most is gonna cost us like a 4th round pick, they really seem to want to distance themselves from that contract / player.

You could achieve both things.

I don't see how Nylander returns less than Timo Meier.
What’s the deal with Garland? If he was on Toronto and playing in their offence I think he could be a 55-65 point player. For 4.9 million a year that seems like a good deal.

Matthews is the one that is bothering me the most. He’s the face of this franchise and has a major influence on this team. It sure would be nice to see him step up and take a team friendly deal, and for more than 5years.

I’m really tired of seeing our top players just focused on the money! If we weren’t living in a cap world, he could get ungodly amounts from this franchise. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

If he truly wants to win in Toronto, then he’s got to leave some money on the table. Besides, if he were to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto, he would have endorsement deals for 20 years after he retired! He’s NEVER going to have to be concerned about money, so wtf???

Our GM has spent some money foolishly this offseason already, maybe Matthews doesn't think he will spend it wisely.

What happens if he takes a discount, they continue to lose and we sign more players like Reaves/Kampf on medium-length contracts that are overpayments?

Only in Toronto can posters justify paying matthews more than mcdavid and try to blame his not signing on reaves 1.3 and kampf 2.4 . One contract buriable if needed.

Matthews has too many people thinking he is better than he is. Maybe too 5 in the league and wants to be paid the most. 2nd highest paid last year 15 th in points

If we pay more by CH%, that is insane and I'll say so.

He is the second best player in the world unless you think his injury will continue. He was the best the last time he was healthy, although I still think McDavid is better.

This whole board is littered with people such as yourself that do not understand that the cap changes and the dollar amount is irrelevant.

On the "buriable contract", it still leaves 200k on the books, not a big deal, the bigger deal is he is clearly here to play, so the full hit is there, where you could have played someone like McMann for half his hit and got a better player.

The overpayment of Kampf + Reaves is probably what Marner was overpaid and people lose it over that.

McDavid by far the better player.
