I think we should break through and stop being hinged on 1st pairing 2nd pairing and 3rd pairing

Make 3 good pairimgs that can play any moment. We do not have a hedman that can eat minutes while supporting a low guy to shut down playing with a top guy.

Calling gavrikov a 3rd pairing guy seems so, i dont know, useless.

The left side thing is definitely not ideal but he is definitely not a bottom pairing defender. He plays similar minutes to Muzzin's. He's a direct replacement for Jake Muzzin. And undoubtedly Sandin would be going in the other direction.
Why is left side not ideal? Realistically looking at it, need a 2LD

Rielly - Brodie
XXX - Liljergen
Giordano - Benn/Sandin

Is how it should shape out. The 2nd LD position has a hole

I would argue for...

We've seen Carolina and Pittsburgh both win Cups with 3 pairings rotating in.

Yes exactly and to some degree St Louis similar thing and even Tampa with the same concept. Run three different pairs with players that play the way you want to play and that excel at it

Toronto's defense seems to predicate itself on player type and who is supposed to mix well and offset with the other one. Just get six good players that can skate and play f***ing defense

I wouldn’t be against that either. I don’t have the stats with Brodie on LD but I would be interested to know how he does

Someone like Zub would be great if he becomes available.

Having the objective of 3 pairings that can play in all situations is pie in the sky like 4 scoring lines especially in Canadian NHL cities.

I am very skeptical that he's a Muzzin level player. He has played a lot more with Werenski out and to be honest, I haven't seen him enough to know one way or another. So unless his underlying numbers are really fantastic, I will remain very skeptical.

Trading Sandin for a pending UFA who doesn't have much of a track record seems really... not good again. But if the deal can involve Jenner as well, maybe we're onto something.

How many playoffs have we complained about we can't score when it matters? What we need is a top 6 play driving LW; lets not pray that Knies comes and is the saviour or focus on marginal D upgrades. We need more scoring more than anything.

I don't know how good or how bad he is to be honest. I'm just making the observation of how he's been used in Columbus and would presumably be used in Toronto.

Werenski played 13 of 15 games this year and 68 games last season. Gavrinov is still over 22 TOI under those circumstances. He's a high usage defender with Werenski as Columbus' 1st Left Side guy.

I wouldn't acquire this player without an extension being worked out first.

Gavrikov is only a bit older then our core, is very responsible defensively and on the pk, hes moderately physical, can crease clear, and can play the right side adequately. We could also resign him to a 7 year 4 to 4.5 mill per extension. He checks almost every box we need.

Not even just scoring but it needs to be a piece that changes how teams deal with us. A 50 point two way middle 6 winger doesn't do that, someone who pushes Nylander down to the 3rd line or a high end threat from the blueline does.

The only way I’d be willing to trade Sandin in a deal for Gavrikov is if a contract extension comes along with him.

2024 1st for Kapanen at 50%.

Kane + Gavrikov changes how every team comes at us. The price will be high though.

I think that depends on the player. Another vanilla two way type that can get those 50 points playing with the right (better) players doesn't move the needle, but either of a lower level triggerman or "or man show" offensive generator could really change the complexion of top 9 by making the third line into more of a threat. I still hope that Robertson can grow into that, and there's a lot of hockey to be played
