The next question is where would you fit Lyubushkin? He's not very good on the PK, while Holl is... are you keeping Boosh instead of Liljegren? We need that PK presence... I just believe that they didn't think he was a fit for where the team was going. Then Buffalo overpaid. If you are going to remove Holl, you need to upgrade on that spot, and while Boosh is more physical, he isn't an overall upgrade at all, even 5v5. Boosh is a bottom pairing guy... and that spot is Lilly right now... and I'm not taking Boosh over Lilly, I can tell you that much.

I agree we could you that physicality... but go ahead and properly upgrade the Holl spot. I'm back to Murphy and Peeke. Some people are talking about Gavrikov as well..

I don't think this is realistic, but let's imagine Columbus goes for a change in direction... we could fix a lot here, but trading for Gavrikov, Peeke and Jenner (and I don't think Jenner in particular is available)... have to send Kerfoot, Holl, Sandin, 1st and probably one or two of the Finns. Gavrikov is a soon to be UFA, so you'd have to sort that out quick and hope he signs for under $5 mil. It would be difficult to fit under the cap next year, and you would have somewhere around $3-4 mil max for Bunting if you elected to keep him.

Could you work on Lybushkin to get him better at PK? I haven't loved Holl on the PK this year.

I don't think we can fix all the holes we have this year.

Sign me up for Gavrikov

Rielly - Liljergen
Gavrikov - Brodie

Is a very solid top 4
Gavrikov gets caved in in his defensive minutes. At least he plays them I guess unlike Schenn but he's not very good with or without the puck.

I'm all for adding some grit but these guys can't cut it in the top 4 on a team that needs to contend.

At this point, I'd rather just move Kerfoot for whatever we can get and use Robertson/Steeves a legit chance in our top 6. Kerfoot has been absolutely useless this year and freeing up his cap space would do wonders come deadline.

Gavrikov can't cut it on a contender's top 4? I suggest you watch him play. Gavrikov was a top 4D on a team that eliminated the Leafs, btw. Gavrikov-Savard was a rock solid unit.

Columbus gets caved in as a team.

It doesn't work under any condition. You do not give up a player like Marner for that return.
If you consider contract status and compare against the Tkachuk trade, it's not far off.

Huberdeau (1W with 1 more year before UFA) vs Horvat (2C that we would negotiate with before the trade)

Weegar (2D with 1 more year before UFA) vs Murphy (3D with 3 more years)

Tkachuk (1W RFA) vs Marner (1W with 2 more years of control).

Calgary received players of slightly better quality, but much higher risk (both could have bolted after 1 year). Marner only has 2 more years of control, both of which are under a NMC, while Tkachuk had RFA control.

Gavrikov is quite a bit better than Lyubushkin and has played big top 4 minutes for Columbus for years now, including time on the top pairing with Werenski. Also put up 33 pts last year despite being mostly a defensive dman. He's definitely gonna cost more than Lyubushkin did

He plays right side as well correct?

Werenski got caved in last year and everyone knows how good he is. Tough to judge players on bad teams

Wonder what toews wants.

125 million in earnings. Might want to win more over money.
There are 3 major 2 way C. Horvat. O rielly. Toews. They may want out

Boston. Colorado. Toronto need C. Toronto the least.

If we really want to show Matty in a last dance try to make a run so that he signs.

We could do both toews and gavrikov at 50 % with 100 k to spare

Picks and prospects. Engvall flipped for a pick

Bunting. Matthews Marner.
Robertson. Tavares. Nylander
Kerfoot. Toews. Jarnkrok
ZAR. Kampf. Malgin

Clifford. Holmberg. Simmonds. Steeves as extras.

Gavrikov. Brodie
Rielly. Lilly
Gio. Holl/sandin

Extras Benn Mete.

Murray
Samsonov

That’s about as deep as you are going to get.

Not sure what you would have to pay for toews?

1st/3rd. Prospect?
2/3rd for Gavrikov?

Goaltending: I still don't know what we have, but to date I've been pleasantly surprised.
Forwards: A 3C would be my top priority. While I think Kamph could do the job, someone more well rounded would be a nice acquisition. @Legion34 mentions Toews; he would be my first choice as well. Expensive, but a C group of: Matthews, Tavares, Toews and Kamph, yes please. Dependent on goaltending.
Defense: My biggest concern. Losing Muzzin's 20 min a night is terrible for the team. Sandin is not ready, and I would be very concerned about asking Gio to step in during the playoffs and task him Muzz's minutes. I can live with Holl, but would prefer an upgrade on 3rd pair.
Rielly/Brodie
*****/Liljegren
Gio/Holl/***** with ***** preferred.
Many here like Gavrikov, I don't know enough about him to argue one way or the other, but thank you to @Mr Bill Waters for the clip, that was epic :amazed:. Would Dylan Demelo be an improvement over Holl and be affordable? Zub, though I doubt the Sens would wish to part with him.

Soucy or Kulikov, don't spend a first

I say we get one cheaper guy and one investment defenseman. The investment defenseman should have some term and upside and be a top four stalwart. The cheaper guy can be mixed and matched similar to a Jordie Benn.

Yeah, Gavrikov looks to be cut from the same cloth as a Yushkevich-Markov.

DeMelo is not an improvement on Holl. Most guys we can get are not improvements on him, and those who are will be expensive.

Sandin will also be in this lineup full time or will be traded.

The thing I don't like with Gavrikov is the Leafs are unlikely to be able to sign him long term.

I don't know too much about him but If that's the case... if he's available... Leafs to need to find a way to get a guy like that.

There are always guys like that, you just have to look at programs that prioritize that type of defense but maybe the wheels are falling off the team that particular year. We just don't prioritize it so these guys look so exotic.

How come? With Muzzin likely ending up LTIR-retired we'll have 5.65 million in cap. That can be used towards re-signing him

He can be our 2LD for a few years, he's only 26

Is Werenski a defensive stalwart? You say everyone knows how good he is but Rielly has a rep as a good to great defenseman and he’s awful at playing defense.
I mean Werenski isn't Slavin but he's also not Rielly bad. He's decent in the defensive end

Point is his advanced stats haven't been pretty on CBJ, particularly his xGF% and HDCF%. If he was on a team like Toronto I'd imagine those would shoot up
